Brug Form is Just Sweet

I was over at one of the other forums and saw the post below. The first thing I thought was Brug Forum People are so nice.... Maybe too nice but nice people. LOL

Pls. note that plants are not given away here, seedlings or otherwise.

The accepted procedure is to go to the Exchange Page (see the top of this Forum) & post what one is willing to EXCHANGE, SWAP or TRADE for the desired plant.

This is how it's done & that's the location where folks interested in swaps know to look.

Anyway here is my Snowbank two weeks ao. It is growing really fast it is 4 times that size now. It flowered last year with our rain it is a little slow getting there this year but the leaves are so pretty I do not feel anxious.

How about another one of my pots. Chicken, Chicken. LOL

Oh I love the chicken, lol. The snow banks looks great too. Yours may be doing better not having as much white variegation as the ones I tried. It seems the more white they have the easier they die here, lol. Thanks for what you said above. None of us mind sharing plants but like to get to know people a little first and we are trying to get through the summer to see our plants bloom in the fall then we will be ready to cut and share and will post the ones we have available then.

Thanks for the compliments. I agree .. very nice folks in here. You have very nice plants ! The Snowbank ?? doesn't look right. HHHMMM maybe Maya or Sunset ? I could be wrong. Is it super fuzzy ?

BTW, Love the chicken ! :)

Frank, she's already a beauty, and she's not fully open! Just wait until all the buds open! As I said, it was one of my favorites! Very prolific bloomer... although, all my attempts at pollinating failed. I'll catch it next bloom cycle. Sweet Lilian also proved to be very photogenic! I took the most photos of this particular variety. Viagrow... hahaha! So, what happens if the stem is erect for more than 4 hours? Should you consult a horticulturist? LOL! Larissa, in today's world, you sort of have to help your kids develop a thick skin so they're ready for whatever life throws at them. We're the type of parents that never shielded our kids from the uglier side of life... we were always very open, encouraging them to question the world around them, and to discuss things they weren't sure about. Life is tough... kids need to develop good coping skills! One of our favorite lines was, and still is: Life is full of choices... for every choice there is a consequence... think hard before making your choices! When our kids were teens, our house was the favorite hangout... there were always other kids at our house. They would all come over after school and hang out, play video games, listen to music... my fridge got a ton of mileage! I think we fed the neighborhood! You should hear some of the stories from parties at our house! Our motto was: Don't fall asleep before we do! Oh, the jokes we played on people! Ahh... great memories! Hilarious memories! We never had a lot of money, but we did have a lot of fun! Our kids have some awesome memories to take with them through life... that much is certain!

Often the small plant we have originally started out as an above-the-Y cutting, and these will never really make that tall straight-trunk beautiful tree we see in pictures. So you need new basal shoots. Get it in the ground in a great spot with afternoon shade and a good soil. Try using some composted manure for the extra nitrogen for that tall, fast-growing shoot that will someday be your new trunk, and also use a nitrogen-rich "grow" type fertilizer. After you get the new shoot high enough, then you can cut away the old short trunk and root it for a friend. Also switch back to your regular bloom-type fertilizer once the trunk is tall enough. :) - Tom

viburnumvalley gave you some interesting choices. Remember that a wine is sweet if some residual sugar (RS) is left in the wine after fermentation. If it is fermented until there is no RS, the wine will be called "dry". Germany has very exact rules, but to Americans they are not necessarily clear. The grapes can be picked at various sugar levels - the sugar increases as the grapes get riper and riper. Then those wines can be fermented until they are dry, called "trocken", or halb trocken. So you can get a spatlese, which will have a lot of sugar at harvest, but if the winemaker wants to, he can ferment it all the way to dry and that wine will not taste sweet. But Eiswein is not the next level up from Trockenbeerenauslese (TBA) The TBA is made by a fungus that attacks the grapes. It is a kind of botrytis, or mold, called "noble rot". It dries the grapes and makes them taste very much like raisins, and it also adds its own flavors. The German levels of sweetness refer to how dry the berries get. Eiswein is made by leaving berries on the vine until they freeze and pressing the frozen juice. Dissolved sugar keeps some from being completely iced and this is what comes out - much more concentrated than if the rest of the water had not formed ice. Those berries don't need to have any botrytis. In both cases - botrytis and ice, the amount of juice is reduced and the wine is thus more expensive. Vouvray comes from the Loire valley. Generally very dry, almost lemony wines. But the Loire also gets botrytis - you need a river or water source. And those very tart grapes, when attacked by botrytis, make very sweet wine. So you can get some very good sweets from the Loire. Sauternes/Barsac are regions in Bordeaux. They typically grow white grapes - semillion and sauvignon blanc. The river allows the botrytis to form and the clusters become moldy then are pressed. These can be super expensive - the 2005 Chateau d'Yquem is available as a future for $500 / bottle. Tokaj is the name of the town, the wine named there is Tokaji. The famous wine is Tokaji-aszu. Also made w botrytized grapes but in this case they also make a dry white. They pick the INDIVIDUAL berries and store them until ready. Then they mash these up and soak that paste in the dry wine. These wines are measured by the amount of sugar. The pails are called puttony, so you can get 3,4,5, 6 puttonyos wine. THat used to mean that they took 3,4,5,6 pails of mashed raisins and soaked them in a barrel of wine. Now it is based on sugar. But at the upper levels, you can have wine that has as much sugar as honey! These are truly great - I expect to be back there in about 2 weeks to get some more. Most Australian rieslings are very dry unless otherwise indicated. May Americna rieslings have enough residual sugar to taste a bit sweet. Port is made by adding alcohol into partly fermented grape juice. Remember, fermenting is the process of converting the sugar to alcohol, so if it is stopped, the juice remains sweet. In Italy they make the vin santos - the grapes are air dried to concentrate the flavors, unlike the botrytis method in Austria, Hungary, France and Germany. Spain has some of the PX sherries made in a similar way, but also fortified. All of the above are for very sweet wines. You can also get late harvest wines - left on the vine until the grapes are really ripe, they produce sweeter wine. And you can find the undrinkable non-wines that they sell in supermarkets - usually have a lot of sugar and flavors added. Not really wine. But don't forget that fruitiness is often perceived as sweet. So a dry wine that has lots of fruit, is often considered sweet. Around $100 you can find Gemstone Facets, Pax syrahs, or other big California wines - some people consider them sweet and soft. They are actually dry wines made from super ripe fruit. At a much lower level, look for Bodegas Arrocal or something similar from Spain - about $10, no oak, and very ripe. Muscat as a grape smells like flowers. Beautiful. But it is not always made sweet. It is often a very dry wine that smells floral. Ditto viognier. Muscat is sometimes used in Tokaji-aszu, and those have fantastic aromatics. Chardonnay, and any wine for that matter, can be made in a number of ways and can be fermented and/or stored in oak barrels. The stereotype California chardonnay is buttery and tastes like vanilla. That vanilla comes from oak. The butter can come from oak, but also malolactic fermentation makes the wine much softer and gives some of that quality. Remember, malolactic fermentation is the conversion of malic to lactic acid and "lactic" means milk. So you get a buttery quality. The oak usually does not impart much tannin to chardonnay. Try Martin Ray from Russian River in Sonoma - about $15. In Burgundy, the French typcially do not use much or any oak for their chardonnay and the result is a much more tart and dry wine. Many California wineries are making unoaked chardonnay as well. Morgan for example. You can try one of these against say, Chateau St Michelle from Washington. Both good, both under $20 or even $15, and one w/out and one w oak. Oak itself is too big a deal to get into here, but people discuss the differences between French and American oak, and in some cases Hungarian and Slovenian. Suffice it to say, whatever anyone tells you, most of it is nonsense. Especially coming from "experts". People in the oak business will explain that the best palates cannot really discern differences. Most of what we consider differences have to do with cooperage and the trees that were used. But it is not true that American oak is vanilla and French oak is spicy. Get good oak and have the same cooper make the barrels and no sommellier will ever be able to tell you which is which based on country. I've tried and was humbled. Anyway, move beyond sweet wines and you will be surprised. A very nice dry shiraz, for example, can taste very fruity and full of blueberries and black cherries if you eat it with a piece of sharp aged white cheddar for example. Cheers!

Don't prune anything now! That little tree needs every single one of those leaves to help get it established and to counteract potential transplant shock. All it needs now is the proper watering. If on dwarfing rootstock, the tree is never going to get very big....12-18'. Structural pruning is done during the dormant period and once established, maintenance pruning can be done in summer. But generally cherries, and especially dwarf cherries, do not require the same sort of pruning attention of most other fruit trees. And before you do any structural pruning....and I'm not sure you need to......take advantage of any fruit tree pruning classes offered by local nurseries or garden centers. These are often free and held in late winter. And are well worth the effort to seek out. You will learn far more form one of these classes than anything you can read online or from a book or watch on YouTube.

I also agree that the people on this forum are extremely nice. Your plants look great but as Edna pointed out that's not a Snowbank. Do you remember what the blooms looked like last season? Mine were very slow to come on this year as well probably due to the long cold and wet spring and early summer. My brugs are just now beginning to bloom.

Darn I thought I knew two of the seven Brugs. Not that it matters to me. I usually buy and grow a plant because I like it and could careless if it has a name. Well I still have the receipt around here since they are suppose to reputable maybe I can dispute the name

I brought two from what I read here that was reputable vendors.

This is a closeup. I am growing it in the shade. I do not think the leaves are fuzzy.

It is Beautiful.. If it is Maya you will love it.. I got taken on a Peaches and Cream.. Still looking for that one..LOL I haven't gotten the chicken to load yet still I want to see...;0)

I agree with almost all. Especially that your brug is a darn good looking angel!!!

What works maybe at other forums...well. WE DO TRADE, SHARE and just have contests, like I just started one...right here on the forum. But as we are here all the time and see folks just stop by to get brugs...and then disappear ....well that is one thing I believe we all step back and wait to share. Once we see someone sticking around...We LOVE TO ENABLE! right friends?

That is my truth...something that I hate to have to say out loud. When I joined this forum I had NO idea that this is not just a place to learn about brugs..get answers and make friends. Boy you should see my garden with the generosity from everyone here!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh and about posting at the Exchange...FORGET IT! I had my trade list there for like 1 or 2 weeks and I can not handle the normal mail...let alone all the private mails I got after I had a trade list. No no...as for me...this forum is really all I can handle and need to have!!

I'll post plants/seeds (not just brugs) that I have extras of here before I post on the exchange or I'll send private emails. It often just ends up being a hassle when I post on the exchange forums.

Whatever the variegated one is its sure healthy looking. I was jealous because I had killed so many, lol. Maya is the only one that lived. Names don't matter so much to me either but if you want to trade it you can just list it as variegated if you aren't sure of the name or send pics to the person who sold it to you and ask if they sent you the right one. The snowbanks I had all had a lot of white and were extremely picky and hard to grow. Yours is very pretty.

Thank you all, as I said there are very nice people on this forum. I think I confused everyone. I was not trying to trade. I was just posting a thought of the difference of how other forums react when someone post request for a want instead of in the exchange area.

Then I posted some pics. I was not posting pics for trade purposes. LOL

Are you saying you got requests for your plants for trade? lol That is funny. That thought did not even cross my mind.

I have never seen anybody been turned away. All we want is for folks to stick around. Naturally if we have a brug to trade, it will go to the members who is active here, first. Not someone popping in and requesting a trade and is never seen again.
Then again when the real cutting time comes, in fall when we have to put the brugs in winter storage, we have so much that THEN it is a different story.

My Bad, as the kids say.

If anyone had seen me this weekend you would have thought I lost my mind. Well I know I have lost my mind long ago it went with my young body. OK, I went in search of my receipt for the Snowbank. If anyone has moved you know how hard it is to find somehthing that you think you know where it was before you moved.

I was determined to find the receipt. I was going to send this vendor a nasty letter I was on the path of destruction. "How dare they sell me the wrong Brug"

I finally found the receipt. What I ordered was.

- HerrenHauser Garten - Had one but it had not bloomed in two year I thought if I ordered it from a reputable vendor I would see that gorgeous double orange bloom. Stupid me. Now I have two none blooming HGs.

You'll probably be happier with Maya then Snowbank. Maya is a beautiful brug and pretty low maintenance where Snowbank is pretty but so picky. If I had to chose I'd rather have a brug that flowers well.

Yes I am so glad I found the receipt. I would have felt bad yelling at them and find out later I was wrong. I keep all receipts in a folder but I recently moved and everything is lost and obviously my mind is also lost.

When I moved my plants I took them out of the pots and put them in garbage bags. I do not know what anything is now. I will have to wait until the green leaf Brugs bloom and the two that do not bloom I will know those two are the HerrenHauser Garten. LOL Has anyone got that one to bloom?

I am also happy that you guys told me it looked wrong to be Snowbank or I would have been going around thinking I was growing Snowbank.
