I guess you'd call it a seed ball, Catherine. After they've been on the bush for a while, you can cut them off and pull the many seeds off, sort of like Echinacea seeds.

I've never tried to start buttonbush from seed - it colonizes and is very easy to root.

My sister has a button bush, and underneath it she has about a hundred baby button bushes. She gave me two that she'd potted up. I just need to find my sunniest spot and plant them once the hottest weather is over. I need to get some low growing native grass seed to plant this fall, also. The gardening work is never done, is it?

Anyway, button bush is pretty easy to grow from those seeds.

I feel stupid........I thought the seeds had already left and was wondering what that ball had to offer! So the seeds, when mature, will just fall out of that ball, and leave the ball behind?
Since I'm in the midwest and our summers have gotten really dry, I doubt they'll spring up everywhere.......but you never know.
