Sputnik Buttonbush Plant looks dead

Hi how long should my button bush be leafless its nice weather here all my other plants have been leafing out it really has no life going on but I babied it so it should be alive. Anyone have one of these and is it still sleeping or just dead hehehehe

I have a huge one that's colonized with new shoots, Angie. Mine always takes longer to leaf out than other plants, so I imagine yours is alright. You could scratch the bark gently and if it's green, you know it's alive. Give it some time - when it blooms, it REALLY attracts the butterflies!

I think I ask this question ever year hehehe im getting old hehehe thx I sure hope its alive .

Fledgling, I've not heard of the cultivar. However, I would be hesitant to try it, mainly because often when a hybrid is created, it loses some of the nectar in the process. Maybe, maybe not. I am trying to stick with mostly natives, because these are the plants that see to provide lots and lots of nectar for the butterflies. I guess that's why you see so many more butterflies in native habitats than in home gardens. I would be interested in other opinions, though, on how well it serves as a nectaring shrub. Susan

Exochorda, because i like saying it. Calycanthus, because a long season of bloom with fragrance is always a plus. Viburnums, because if you find out there's a problem that bothers you, it's easy to give away. Lindera. Native, flowers in an odd time of year. Best advice? Find what you like. There is no shortage of chouces. You know you should stay away from things that really like water, but seasonal summer drying could be a potential issue with just about anything, depending on duration and competition. A couple years of some extra moisture always help.

Have mostly Allium 'Purple Sensation' planted mostly towards the back of mixed perennial borders. Always deadhead it after blooming and cut all the leaves and dead stems off soon thereafter; latter because of shading other perennials as well as looks. Usually have taller perennials in front of it (e.g. summer-flowering garden phlox and fall-flowering New England asters). Still, do count on getting rid of the leaves and stems quickly. Off deck: New England aster immediately in front (last June 9). In our case, blooming at a slow flowering time is the main reason to have these alliums.

I sowed the Sisyrinchium this past december, still waiting to see if they germinate. They should come up this spring right? I dont expect them to flower this year but at least I can get 30 of them, a small colony, in the ground growing and preparing to flower next year. I wintersowed them in a flat last year too, but my row cover ripped and made like a chute that directed water straight into the tray, and a lot of the soil, and presumably seeds too, washed away. No germination from that tray.

You probably saved me some worry by posting Angie. I planted three bare root buttonbushes a couple weeks ago. They're just the native variety, not named but I assume they may be late to leaf out also.

I'm prone to worrying about my buttonbush, too, Angie. It still hasn't shown any sign of life, and the bark is so dark, it makes you think it's dead. I scraped back a little of the bark today, and it was soft and green, so it's just a matter of time before it'll leaf out.

Nice I so love this bush its kinda my baby but I sure dont want to loose it .Still no sighs of life here.

Woot it finaly has to small up and coming leafs im so happy to see them they are just small knots right now but its coming alive finally woot.
