Easter cactus is bi polar

Okay, I never grew one of these before. My mom has 2 of them, she gave me the smaller one because the leaves were shriveling up on them and I told her I'd kill it for her. ;) I'd love to save it, but I don't know if I'm rescuing it or not. The leaves that were shriveled are still shriveled up, but I've noticed that the leaves near the base of the plant have little rootlets coming out of them. I have no idea how to water this bugger, I know they aren't 'true' cacti and don't like water, but not sure of what to do about that. I've been giving it water once a week from the bottom of the tray, then let it drink up and remove the water that it hasn't soaked up within 10 minutes or so. I tried misting it because I thought maybe it's got aerial rootlets or something. I don't have it in full sunlight, it gets morning sun for about 3 or 4 hours and then indirect sun after that.

Any advice would be very appreciated! I don't want to kill my mom's plant for her....
