Sprouts in Ontario!!!

Happy Easter Everyone!!!

I have been so busy this winter that I didn't start WSing until mid March and was not expecting too much, so I decided to have a look today. To my surprise I had sprouts of Siberian Wallflower, and Dianthus 'Arctic Fire' and 'Hot Pink'. Perhaps in future I will sow later and have less time looking and keeping things moist.

While outside I did some cleanup which should have been done in Fall. What a job!! I was disappointed that my Perovskia (Russian Sage) did not make it through the winter, and something 'dug out' my Inula Goliath!! UGH!! I was pleased to see my Buddlea 'greening up' and new perennial Geraniums pushing their little noses through. My rock garden is coming alive with snowdrops, scillas, and miniature irises, and my daffodils and tulips are at least two inches high. Isn't Spring great!! What's happening in your gardens?

YIP! YIP! YIPPEE! Congrats on your sprouts....siberian wallflower were my first sprouts too, followed closely by dianthus ... also, arctic fire. Gotta love Spring!

LOL... here too. I'm in Woodstock, half way between London and Toronto and it's been BALMY here hovering around 10C a good deal of the time. For the southerners in the USA, 10C *IS* balmy for us. Normally by this time of year those of us in southern Ontario and more northerly regions are knee to hip deep in snow, heating our homes and dealing with temps ranging from 0C to -30C and even lower. The golf greens are loving the action but some are flooded with water due to all the rain instead of snow and the kids are liking that they can still bike ride and skateboard. My gardens are acting the same. I mulch all my gardens with the maple leaves from our woods and when I pulled some back last week the perennial flowers were sprouting anywhere from 1-3" in height as though it were March or April! Our local news says to just keep them mulched over in preparation for when we do get that first deep freeze and they will be fine. Some articles also mention wrapping tree trunks, esp if the tree is a fruiting variety. The sun and warmth will get the sap moving in the wrong direction for this time of year and wrapping the trunk will keep it cold and dissuade the flow of sap and help prevent winterkill by keeping the majority of the tree "cold". Our squirrels are quite LARGE too. Not only are they enjoying extra ground-hunting without the trouble of snow but they are forraging regularly at the neighbor's feeders. We have squirrel baffels so they can't get at our feeders but quite regularly they will sit under the suet feeders and gobble up the suet that the woodpeckers drop when feeding on it. Imagine...blechhh...sitting and eating suet as a mammal! The poor things are going to have little squirrel heart attacks :o( Despite the lack of cold, we have an abundance of birdlife to keep us entertained on a daily basis and we're happy to see a male and 2 female downy woodpeckers that are regulars at our suet cages. Well, it looks like spring has finally sprung in Ontario. We have had 2 pretty warm days, giving me the opportunity to get my hands dirty and put in two tripods and my peas and snow peas. I also have sprouts: 3 different varieties of lettuce and bunny tail grass. We have had a full day of rain today - not heavy enough to knock my seeds out of the ground, but just nice and steady. Lots of my perennials are sprouting and I am especially proud of my trillium, virginia blue bells, and baptisia which is now going into its third year. Got a lot of yard work done on Saturday so things are on their way. What about you?

hey!!! ... or would it be eh???? lol YOU ARE DOING GREAT .... i would guess the damage is related to transplant .... should be significantly reduced in the future ... second.. bargain trees were already stressed when you got them ... ergo additional damage plus transplant ... third... first year after transplant.. you are responsible for all water ... second year .. i only water in drought .. third year free range .. but for severe drought ... you know.. you are way ahead of the curve on success ... so quit worrying about them ... personally i would use some roundup/credit.. and kill the grass/weeds around each tree for about 3 to 4 foot circle.. and mulch well ... and then let them be near free range ... but for drought ... pump tank .. VERY LOW PRESSURE .. so you can see the drops... then they dont drift ... spray a circle.. avoid hitting tree ... but a little wont do harm ... go over carefully ... but dont shoot for 100% .... go back a week or two later.. see how well you sprayed.. touch up whats left.. and install mulch ... with the mulch .... you still have to test the soil to 3 to 6 inches with your finger to determine how dry the soil is .... good luck ken

Hi Skindoc The only place I can think of over-wintering outside will be at the southern tip of Niagra Peninsula and around Windsor area but still requiring some protection. Depending on the variety, the roots may survive if the temperature does not go below -10C to -15C and may sprout again but the ability to crop and its ripening before the next frost depends upon the amount of total cumulative heat available over the growing period. Hardiness zones are more indicative of the coldness of the region and different areas with the same hardiness zone may not provide similar summer environment for croping and eventual ripening before frost. You may have to provide situation for warm micro-climate such as clear plastic enclosures with appropriate air circulation..

Congratulation on your sprouts!
Not much happening here. I have some sprouts in the containers that I put on the deck, but lots of the containers are still under the frozen snow in the backyard. Spring bulbs...I cannot see anything yet, still lots of snow here. The snow melted one a little spot on the side of the house and I can see the columbines winter-sowed last year. Seen greens feels good.

I got into the winter sowing thing late in the game and did not get much planted, but... I have WS Forget Me Nots, Burgandy Blanket Flower, Lupins and a lone Holly Hock! Not too Shabby! Hopefully my WS Purple Cone Flowers, Daisy's, rock cress and Butterfly Bush and Blue Poppy and perennial sunflower won't be too far behind!

In the Gardens, I had a single daffodil in bloom, and a bunch more that will be any day now! Also I have found some of my daises, Perennial Geraniums, black eyed suzies, and a whole host of other plants starting to green up. I see peonies poking up, way way more then I thought I even had! (New to the garden this spring!)

Oh what a wonderful time of the year!!

So much fun to go out and check them to see what is coming up. I am doing that and also this is the time of year that I start 'the patrol'! I scan the gardens everyday to see what is up or how the things that are up are doing. It sounds like there is much more going on in your garden than in mine. I have lots of WS sprouts, but the gardens are slow. The oriental poppies are up, and also the peonies and of course the daylilies. The hollyhocks are looking kind of bad but still have some green, and a new daisy that a friend gave me (kind of fluffy petals) is showing green. There are blooms from snowdrops, crocus and little blue bell type flowers(a neighbour gave them to me years ago and never knew the name)....I love them and they spread nicely. I haven't planted new tulips in several years so mine are slowly disappearing, but I do have some left that are several inches high, so hope for blooms from them.
Please don't give up on your Russian sage. Mine is always slow, sometimes not showing life until I am about ready to give up as all the rest of the garden is leafing out. My butterfly bushes are not showing life yet either. You must have a real micro climate in your yard! :)
I am not anywhere near done WS the seeds that I need to get in. I just got more bottles on Friday so will get them done this week. (hopefully)
I hope that the weather will be nice enough to get more started and going on in the garden so I can report more activity soon.

OOPS! I forgot that I did plant some 'tulipa tarda' a couple of years ago. I love them and they are multiplying.

My first sprouts are up - lupins. And there are still remnants of the snow banks to melt here yet. It's finally warm here though :)

GG, thanks so much for the 'heads-up' on Perovskia. I have been resisting uprooting the little twigs left each day. Like you, I go out daily and do a 'patrol'. Today, I've had spouts of Lupins, Shasta Daisies, Black-eyed Susans, and my Siberian Irises are finally showing through. There was much less moisture down in the back there this year, and they love that. My peonies are all showing through now, but it seems my new bed next to the cedars was a complete failure. I had planted out several perennials and biennials there in the Fall, and only the rose bush and the white malva seem to have survived. There is hardly any snow cover there so maybe they all froze. So I'll have to fill it with annuals, which I am just starting to sow. We're having sunny warm days and cool nights all week. The perfect recipe for WSing. Marianna, it'll be up your way soon!!

Lupines were my first ones too, followed by Clarkia and red poppies. Now we're going through a cold spell so i don't expect much in the next few days. I did a dozen containers of annuals today, and tomorrow will be taking cuttings of petunias and impatiens - not WSed, of course! :)

I divided my winter sown petunias today. This was my first attempt with w/s petunias. I was very pleased to see the strong, healthy root system on them. I will definitely w/s them from now on. Marg
