Seeds work just fine but you will have to wait longer for blooms. A minimum of two growing seasons will be needed before the seedlings are blooming sized and in many cases it may take longer.

Seeds that have a thick corky layer may need to be trimmed down with a knife. If too much of the corky layer is left the seedling will have trouble shedding the remaining seed after germination and the growing tip can be lost or damaged.

Cuttings taken from the blooming portion of a plant will give flowers much sooner. Why don't you try both methods, raising plants from seed is really rewarding.

Yes, they grow well from seeds, but you never know what you're going to get. If you have a specific variety in mind, better stick with cuttings.

I've never grow brugs from seeds, but I've done lots of datura, so it can't be too hard. I'd love to do some seeds one day when I have more room and more time.

yes, brugs do grow well from seed....here are some that I started from seed in March....they would be bigger by now if I had had larger pots to transplant them into earlier. Soaked them for 24 hours in cold tea .....peeled the bark off and planted.....they are nice and healthy and although I dont know what color they will be....they will still be special to me because I grew them from seed.

The fresher the seeds are the better the germination ratio and rate.

This year I had the wonderful chance to grow some from a great brug hybridizer in Europe and have 12 seedlings growing in the lasagna garden. I was late getting them and didn't get them started until April 12th and they started germinating April 28th through to May 22nd.
( I have had some in the past germinate 3 months after planting so if you try some, do not give up on them to early).

My brugs, except for my variegated one, were grown from seed. It can be done and done well.

However, getting a 12" to 5 or 6 foot cutting works so much faster it is like night and day.

When I whack my big brugs back this fall, you are welcome to have some branches.

I have one growing from seed.It was a unknown cross.out of 9 seeds 5 germinated& (traded the others off....so only 1 growing)This is its 3rd year.its 1st year it grew 3 feet.the 2nd year it made it to about 5 ft& had 1 bloom then a flush of 3 blooms.this year it is at 5 ft now and its on its 3 rd flush.I'd say it pretty much resembles my frosty pink......but I love it cause I grew it from seed.I sent my sis 2 of the others that germinated,she lives in TN grows them in tubs.they have not bloomed for her.but has gotton blooms off my cuttings that were above the "Y".

If I had seeds of a known cross.......I would grow some more from seed.

I have 3 brugs I grew from seeds this spring. They're growing pretty well, but may not bloom this year. The Pacific Northwest isn't conducive to quick brug growth (at least not from seeds). I read that brugs from seeds (B. sanguinea being the exception) yield a high percentage of white blooms, regardless the color of the parent plants. I have my fingers crossed that I'll get something interesting.

I also have 8 B. sanguineas I started from seeds...they came from 2 different sources and I'm hoping they won't all be identical..would like lots of red coloring.

My seeds produces plants/blooms within 4 months!I have some now, that are only 12 high, that have 6 unopened, and 2 open blooms. Unfortunately my camera is down.

costaricafinca, please qualify your "12 high" as feet or inches.
If yours are blooming at 12 feet after 4 months, you must have the perfect climate for them there. The closest I got here in Canada was 10 feet in 4 1/2 months with tiny buds but frost time was near and I had to dig them up, pot them, and reduce their height to fit in my GH for the winter.

I think they grow very easily from seed. If they are fresh I don't remove the cork. If they're dry I soak them overnight and remove it prior to planting. These are a few of the L'Amour x Hawaii White seeds that I planted in May. I'll probably get blooms next summer. There is one that has just started Y-ing but I'm not sure that there's enough warm weather left where I live. They desperately need to be repotted in 5 gallon containers but that will have to wait until next spring because of space issues. I'll take the first year seedlings into the greenhouse and keep them going over the winter but I wouldn't be surprised if it drops it's buds from the change. I'm hoping that I get something besides generic looking white flowers. I have about 15 of this cross and most are between 2 and 3 feet tall, though there are a few short ones like the one in front.

Ruth Ann I can't believe how tall yours got in 4.5 months! Especially in zone 5. What do you feed them?

I have an unamed yellow orangy colored brug that I am letting a seed pod form.Now if I grow these seeds on I could get a different color?or do you mean a shade different?

karyn1 you could see those seedlings at an earlier stage higher up in this same thread last year. As soon as they got 4 sets of true leaves, I planted them right into my Lasagne garden. They maybe got fed added fertilizer on 3 occassions throughout the summer ( 20-20-20).
I got my seeds started a month and a half later this year and am keeping them in pots and they are not doing nearly as well but that's ok, (I wont have to top them to get them into the GH )

What a difference being inground made for your brugs Ruth Ann. This is the first year that I've grown any inground. I put a few cuttings in about 2 months ago. They are definitely growing well and didn't need nearly as much watering as my potted brugs but there's nowhere near the difference that you have. I'm going to mulch them and see if they come back from the roots next spring. If not it's no great loss because I still have the parent plants.

Molly many, if not most seed crosses will revert to white blooms. There are a few varieties that are true to the parent.

White is the dominant colour gene in the genetics of Brug colours. If you are lucky enough to buy seeds from someone who is an actual Brug breeder ( someone who puts a lot of effort into researching the background of their parent plants and makes specific crosses to bring out their better traits)and not someone who just crosses them 'to see what they get' you will be more likely to get coloured ones closer to that of the parents. It's much like line breeding in horses,cats, dogs or anything else.... you have to know what you are doing to get the best results consistently.
Then, as with animals, you also need to grow the Brug to maturity ( a third flowering season is best to be sure) to see exactly what flower that plant will end up with. The colour of the first year's flower will not necessarily be that of the second year's, the colour may deepen or even soften.
I have had pure white flowering seedlings become a lovely cream or pink shade in the second year ( some also remain the same though).

Been cruising the various threads re: planting Brug seeds. Interesting info, but really need to know: how to sow the seed... what soil to use... how deep to cover seed... soak before planting?... how long to germinate?... Sure would appreciate any advice/tips on growing Brug. seed. My cuttings doing really well, and am collecting various cuttings like mad! Gloria brug seeds are easy to grow. When you get them they will have a corky covering. You want to soak the seeds in water overnight to soften the cork. Carefully peel the cork off and put the seed in a moist potting mix. If I'm starting them outside in the summer I don't do anything other than keep the soil moist. If I'm starting them indoors in cooler temps I put them on a seed mat. I don't cover the pots. They usually come up within two weeks. When they have a set of true leaves I transplant them into individual 6" pots and allow them to grow for a while then I transplant them into 12-14" containers let them finish out the season in that size and the next season I move them up to a final larger pot. I don't get flowers until the second growing season. The watering is the same as brugs grown from cuttings. I don't feed them until they have a few sets of leaves then I start with a diluted fertilizer. I use an all purpose fertilizer at first and switch to a bloom booster the second season. I also increase the frequency of feedings to 2x/wk the second growing season. This is what works for me but I'm sure there are different methods that work equally well for others.

Has anyone planted brug seeds in those little Jiffy pellets? I hand-crossed my Butterfly with Double Golden Lady, and I've got an ENORMOUS pod about 3 months old.

YES!!! I have with great success...I have some White Wiskers and a Peach Versicolor started now and that is what I am using.. So far I only have a couple that have germinated...Sounds like yours could be a beauty... Good Luck!!!

Here is yet another seed conversation... Do hybrid brugs not make seeds? Because in over 2 years of growing several varieties of brugs that bloom like crazy, I have yet to see one produce a single seed. It isn't for lack of pollination, since we have bees galore on these guys, and they are also adored by several species of sphinx and hawkmoths in our area. The blooms will dry up after they're done, and in a few days, the stem where the bloom was attached yellows and falls off on it's own. Not really any big deal to me, since I prefer to propagate them from blooming wood, so you get blooms nearly right away. It's just that I'd love to see one of these mythical seeds that everyone talks about so often, lol.

Hi Karyn, Msbatt, & Chena: Appreciate all the good info re: seed planting. Jiffy Pots sound like a great idea. Will be getting some after this weekend. Will also keep you posted as to how I do with seeds. My Brug cuttings are doing fine. Was able to pot up the second batch on Christmas day (which was the last real sunny day we've had, cold nights, chilly mornings,even tho afternoon temps have been hi 70s (78F). but the Brugs seem to love it!!!I'm so excited to see all the leaves just erupting. Sorry, got carried away. Will shut up, sit in a corner, but not before I wish Good Health, and Happy Peace to everyone in the Brug forum. Gloria

Parrothead, the answer to your question is---yes, and no. Pretty much ALL brugs are self-sterile, meaning they require cross-pollenation by a genetically different cultivar. And not all cultivars can pollenate all other cultivars, so the reason you haven't had seedpods is *probably* because the insects in your yard just haven't managed to hit the right combination yet.
