If the buds were furry,then it is a type of chamaecereus...
do the stems resemble peanuts?It's another name for this variety.
If the leaves are smoother then it could be a type of Zygocactus.

It's an Echinopsis...probably a hybrid. The Echinopsis, Lobivia, Chamaecereus genera all interbreed and produce some great hybrids.

Echinopsis hybrid is right. Look up echinopisis "fuzzy navel" for more info about that little guy you have there.

I looked up Echinopsis fuzzy navel and found out that it's an Echinopsis subdenudata cv. "fuzzy navel." Also I learned it will probably drop its buds because I've been watering too much. You're supposed to stop watering completely after the buds sprout. Thanks much for the guidance.

Hi Cactusfreak. I'm really lucky to live in Southern Cali. Everything I've planted will live through the winter just fine.

Here it is a couple weeks later and my Echinopsis has its first bloom. And it looks like a few more are on the way.
