Rooting a stapelia from cuttings

Hello everyone, I have been given the NOID stapelia cuttings in the picture below. I know absolutely nothing about stapelias other than their infamous smell! I read that they should be taken from the narrowed part of the stem as near to where they sprout from the main part of the plant. These cuttings appear to me to have been taken from further along the stems not the narrow part.

What do you think?

Can anyone tell what type it could be just from the pic? The owners plant hasn't yet flowered and it was given to them as a bunch of cuttings also.

Will they root? I hope so.

They were cut on 28th April. Thanks for looking.

I imagine you won't be able to get an ID until they have bloomed.

Assuming rooting them is similar to their Huernia relatives:
Leave them unpotted until the cut ends callus over. Then pot them up either horizontally or vertically covering a third to half of the stem. Place in a warm brightly lit area. Media can be kept BARELY moist or allowed to dry out lightly. Soil should not stay wet. When new growth emerges, the cuttings should have rooted.

I would take the cutting from the joints, they will not flower on ond growth, keep it however for the new growth it will produce. The ones you have just cut, leave them just on top of the soil to produce roots, do not bury them into soi. Take the you mix and put into a pot, do not press down the mix, lay the cutting on top of the soil and gently push into this mix. Do not water until you roots coming out, or they will rot. They will need indirect light. This all I know about these, I just started some this week, but I wait until I see roots coming out of the old stems, them take them off. Redbeard, I too just went crazy for Asclepiads this year. Two orders from 'Miles To Go' and one with 'Bob Smoley'. Pictured is my latest order from Miles to Go but I also grew seedlings from Ebay vendors; Exotic_cactus, Andrea*seeds, Other vendors seeds I was not so lucky with. A lot of the plants just purchased still has flower buds on them. Don't think I can save them but will try. But the plants are large, heavy rooted and could be divided up more. Next year I should have them coming out of my ears. Also thanks to people like you, I also was successful with Aloe poly seeds. Although not as many as you have. Extras I have right now are Orbea variegated. Stush

your cutting seem to be very long! Not sure if this would be an issue. Anyhow I would also check that the stem in the dirt is not getting soft and rot. If it fails, I would try to cut closer to the tip of the stem, as long as the stem is still firm/healthy, let it callous for a couple days before placing the cut end in the soil, 1/2 to 3/4 inch deep. And as said by mesembs, no water until rooted.

Just re-reading this post and thinking of trying to grow a few stapelias from seeds if I can find any. I wanted to see if you guys know if the actual seeds do best with only high humidity? I've read online that you should keep stapelia seeds at 90% humidity....which I'm not even sure how to do indoors. Would you just keep the seed in a tupperware with a couple of holes and make sure it's damp and warm? Also curious if seeds like a lot of light, or darkness until there are actual signs of growth? Stush, hope you're doing well. I have an edithcolea that basically showed no growth for about a month and a 1/2 under my lights like all my other stapelias. The minute I put it on a heat pad in it's new potting mixture, it went from the darkish green/brown color that it came to me as, to a grassy green color with growth from every arm. The arms also plumped up and have gotten pretty fat. This seems to be the case with most of these stapelias I've been trying to grow. They've sat most of the summer looking kind of thin and dark green which I thought was naturally the way they look, to fatter light green stems (similar color as Nik's hoodia seedlings) now that they're in a new setup. I think the edithcolea wants it hot around it's roots. Hopefully that helps in case you give it another shot. I'll take some photos today and see if I have 'before' and 'after' shots to show you.

These will grow best in fullish sun, but indirect is OK, too. They can be rooted horizontally of (as in nature) vertically. Pretty undemanding, except it doesn't like cold and wet and Stapeliads (succulent Asclepiads) as a rule attract root mealy bug (at least in SouCal).
