The Datura that took over the world

They say there are 2 types of plants here. Those that die and those that take over. This is a take over plant. I was amazed when I went to get some potting soil It had covered the entire walkway. Now thats 12"+ a day growth. It has been raining for 3 days.

First picture is a right now and the second was 2 days old. Quite an amazing plant. It smells so good. You can smell it 50 feet away.

Is this normal for this datura ?

jeep,did you fertilize?i've been told not to treat them like a brug.did you start them in ground or pots?i'm trying some seed in pots as of today. thanks,patricia

It was a volunteer that came up in a misplaced pot, I did not know what it was until it flowered. Then I tried to move it and it was firmly anchored. It is right next to my chemical injector for irrigation so yes when I rinsed the containers it was fertilized. I put some seeds out a few weeks ago in between plants on the ground and close to 100% are up and growing.

Mine is living in pretty poor soil and semi shade. It has been trying to get out into the light and has finally succeeded. I may just have to see how big it gets unless it starts crowding my plumeria's which are 10 more feet away.

I would start them in the ground myself as they will grow out of their containers fast. Every flower makes a pod with seeds here. The bee's arrive late knowing they will open at dusk. I like invasive plants myself.

as soon as I plant some of the seedlings, I almost immediately fill the cup again. We have a double lot here in florida and there wasn't hardly any plants at all here when we moved. I am trying to change that LOL. I'm also giving his mom plants, she does better with them after they have sprouted than straight from seed. I also intend to give them as gifts :)

I have started pulling up forget me nots as soon as they bloom. In the veggie garden I pull them up before they bloom. Still plenty left next year. That bell flower campanula is another story. The year I removed most my good perennials from a garden they had invaded because we were painting that side of the house, I used roundup on the companula. Most of it died, but I still do spot round up (with a big piece of cardboard in hand to shield the other plants) as some appear. They have huge white tubors 2 or 3 feet underground, and a new plant will grow from a piece of root so pulling them up can spread them! My other problem plant is the beautiful native white anenome. Its lovely, but totally takes over. I've been pulling that up, letting it stay in one bed only cuz its so pretty. I just read an article about gardening as you get older and avoiding this type of plant as well as really high maintenance perennials is what they recommended. Nice mounding plants that stay where you put them are what I like more and more! Good luck Micki, Kathy

I'm going to try again, because interestingly the thread didn't move to the front page... maybe because GW thought I was a 'guest'... Here's my post in case it doesn't carry over (and if it did, sorry for the duplication): I apologize for the old thread resurrection, but you guys weren't kidding! Last year I freecycled a *lot* of HRDA, and left two. Didn't get nearly as much seed from them so wasn't concerned. Today went to the gaura bed to compare what I had growing in a jug as gaura (it wasn't, dang it, just more weeds so far), and oh my stars I have another bumper crop of HRDA coming in! LOL! I'm not freecycling this batch, I'm gonna eat 'em! And *if* I spare one, I'm bagging the seed head before I pull it down. I did it wrong last year. Found a recipe at dandelion herb dot com, for anybody else who might be facing this "abundance" this year: "Steamed Greens with Feta Steam greens --wild and cultivated --beet greens are especially good with mallow (Malva spp.) and purslane (Portulaca oleracae). Amaranth (Amaranthus spp.) also is scrumptious. Remember to use young greens for a most tender treat. Saute garlic in olive oil, add steamed greens and crumbled feta. Delicious."

Thank you Bonbon_N. mantorvillain, my daturas are not that big. At least I don't think they are. What would be a good size for a purple datura? The one in that picture is not even my biggest one :) This one is about 5' tall, with one branch over 5'. I guess the pictures are not the best. It is almost dark outside, so the light is not very good. Also, it is hard to see the trunk, so you can see the real size, because there are plants growing around it. Valentina

Yep, that's normal. If you fertilize, it will grow twice as fast. I pick the pods off & only leave a few to mature at the end of the season. I sprinkle some of the seeds & pull them if they come up where I don't want them. They do smell great & huge moths come to pollinate them.

Ok, thanks I was just showing the newbie in me. I'm in love. Something that loves it here. Now that the awe is gone. Maybe I can train it to grow over a lattice arbor ? Even castor beans do not like it here. They need shade. I have some babies that will get to see the full sun in a few weeks. If they grow I may have a Inoxia hedge for a few hundred feet.

I have learned my lesson.

She's a sprawler alright. I bet the hawk moths are going crazy! That thing is gonna reseed everywhere LOL! Very pretty :)

looks like a vine! Datura here can get too much water, last year the one I had up and died at 5 ft tall, I am sure it was all the rain and watering of my dahlias, (same bed) that did them in.

Arizona those things grow all over the place.

Looks like you might want to get a hold of Karman's Datmasia, and see if it like the heat :)

Boy those are doing great! I saw a really beautiful border while I was in Tulsa and of course didn't have the camera with me. Along the back of the fence was tall cannas then lantana mixed with tall purple cone flower and huge white datura with the little baby colored elephant ear looking things at the bottom edge. (Past my bedtime, lol) It was so thick and colorful it was amazing. I will ask my SIL if she will go by there and take a pic if they are in the area again. That whole neighborhood was just unreal with the plants growing like crazy and not a bug in sight all living it up around the beautiful older homes. Everthing was so happy and it was so different than Texas.
