I didn't see the show and don't know of any garden by the civic center; however not too far from there is the Hayes Valley Farm. They re-routed the on/off ramp from our central freeway about ten years ago and this left an empty square block where the old off ramp was. That basically sat there unused (except by the homeless et al.) for several years. A few years ago some group took it over and turned it into a little community farm. I've never been in there but it looks cool and is way nicer than it was before. Here is a link that might be useful: Hayes Valley Farm

Al, I don't have grass type greens to add, I used to have lawn with clippings, but they did not get it hot enough. The used coffee grounds makes it really hot, but you need to add the osh redwood bagged. There is no other formula I found that works. Old pumpkins from Halloween if you can get them are good, but you can not get them most of the time. Broderbarb, Thank you for sharing the witchgrass page. I think newspapers have ink are unsuitable. I would need some plainish cardboard without printing. I have only a small area around some of the edges of my yard, which have to do with the neighbors. It has not spread to the whole yard or anything drastic like that. I have to look into finding some kind of cardboard that would be not dyed or printed. I was thinking about cotton muslin, you can get it from a sewing store, undyed, low priced. Cotton would bi degrade, but it would take a much longer time. One might change the material from time to time, but I have plant roots in the area so I have to be concerned about creating a barrier for those roots. I may not want to block the area. I might be better off with just cutting it off as it comes up. That's the only reason why it is not spreading any longer. I would have think it over and experiment. Do you still have problems with it coming from the neighbors? One can not jump the fence and do a treatment to their yards, however much one may wish to do so.
