Does anybody actually grow thistle?

I ordered some seeds of pearly everlasting for winter sowing. My understanding is that they mainly attract American ladies, which should definitely be possible here. But it seems from the reading I have done that painted ladies really prefer thistle. I really don't want to bring one of those into my garden! Does anyone around here actually grow this stuff? Are there any less obnoxious varieties?

BTW, I was at one of my local parks this morning and there was a large field with many thistle plants, so I don't feel my help is exactly necessary. :D. I just would like more butterflies in my garden!

I've always been a bit confused about the painted ladies and thistle thing. They rarely ever show up here, and when they do, they're usually badly worn - I've never found any cats. Thistles grow naturally along parts of my road, but they're very ugly. When I was in Alabama earlier this year, there were some beautiful burgundy colored thistles growing. I didn't get back there to harvest any seeds, but I'd sure like to at some point. The soil over there (Wilcox and Monroe Counties) is red, I mean real red, not just reddish orange like the subsoil here. The soil over there is burgundy, like the thistles -

There are other types of thistles that don't have thorns, so I'm guessing they use those. I don't think caterpillars could survive C. horridulum!

Centaureas are thistles and so are artichokes!
So there are some that are pretty and useful.

Toni I only grow 1 kiwi for 'ornamental' purpose. Know that you need 1 male for 6-9 female plants to get the fruit. Apparently fruit nurseries/catalogs usually list suitable 'partner'. You can try to ID if yours is male or female by looking at the flowers-I never tried so far. Here is the sketch I had in my notes: (you can't distinguish male from female plants until they bloom. The male flowers have stamens, and the female ones have carpels.) It takes 3-5yrs. to get the fruit. Yours is mature, so I would probably try to buy another one & see if it works (after trying to determine sex of the existing plant). Just make sure you keep the sex/name of the new one, so if it doesn't work, you know to look for another male/female. Did you have flowers on yours yet? I grew mine from the cutting I got abt. 7yrs. ago, where it was also grown as ornamentsl only. They need pruning similar to grapes. BUT, I am not the expert, maybe there is more info here on GW. The fig is kept outdoors thru the summer, it's in the pot. My friends are Italian, they gave me the young offspring 2 yrs. ago. So far I did not give it 'proper' conditions (should be dormant in winter-unless having a greenhouse?) It's not cold-hardy, know from their experience. I personally like taste of fruit a lot, just eat them from the tree, delish... I rooted numerous Ludisia cutting in the water like you. I am about to repot it, will take better pic after. I think I had lots of begginers luck so far. Was really excited about air-layering that palm! Kept the original trunk for about a yr. I had date palms sprouting in my compost heap couple of yrs. ago: after leaving pits in compost, I think they had just enough heat to survive the winter & to crack the seed shell. In spring there was about dozen palms all over the compost - I was amazed. I remember my mom trying to grow them from seed by cracking the shell with hammer, it worked for her couple of times. I don't have any animal babies, my daughter recently moved with her 2 dogs; kids always had dogs, cats and another pets around (incl. ferret & a corn snake), no birds so far. First was Doberman, lived 15 yrs; second was rescue Staffordshire Terrier lived for 16 yrs; now she has 2 that are 4...I think now I need little holiday. Rina

Well . . .sort of. I just got it. It was one of the dozen bareroot roses that arrived last week from Hortico, for a shipment that was ordered for "November '08" delivery. (So, Hortico has no calendar!). They sell it under the name Terracotta. But at least they eventually sent it. I also ordered about a dozen others that they said they had last November, but that they still don't have in reality. But I can tell you this about this rose. It is a color sport of Leonidas, and that rose I've grown for years in almost ideal Southern California conditions for roses (eastern San Diego at my mom's place). Leonidas gets every rose disease ever discovered if you are not RELIGIOUS with your spraying. It gets mildew and black spot even where nothing else gets these two. Don't even think about trying to grow either Terracotta or Leonidas "no spray." And actually, I have found that to be the case with most of these "chocolate" roses, except for Hot Cocoa. I still love the color group and get most every one I see, but I also have to commit to keeping up with the spraying, or else put up with the consequences. Hot Cocoa would be the obvious choice in this color class if you are not going to be good with your spraying. Kathy

Hi David, gee, I'm sorry to say, that I post photos with Tinypic dot com. I export mine from my software pro*gram to the desktop in a useable size, then pick it up from Tinypic with a url that will work for the post. I guess that's not going to help you much. My DH has that same issue on his work com*puter and it can be annoying sometimes, although I can understand why it is done. Here in my garden, there has never been a deer problem which I am grateful for. Red LIly Beetles are bad enough. I have clay s*oil that is a little on the acid side and surrounding silver maples close to our property seem to make sure there is never a drainage issue. [g] If you plant them in pots, will you have to plant them in the ground in the fall? I bought my bulbs locally, so someone else will have to share that info about bulbs. B&D lilies were recommended to me and if you want to see what other people's experiences are, you can check them out on Garden Watchdog. I noticed people mention the size of the bulbs.

Wow! Okra is related to hibiscus?? I got this from seed at Renee's Gardens. The only seed that "took" and then I got this plant, and then I looked it up, and turns out it's an annual. That was a lot of work for a very few flowers... Yup -- that arbor cost me $10. Plus some sweat equity! @rosecanadian - Carol -- that's not a bench, that's my worm box. But I think I killed all the little wormies... Thanks for your good wishes, all. I am watching my Rouge Royale closeley these days. More buds coming! Such a good bloomer already, and in its first year. Diane -- you crack me up. Always. And make me think. Kristine -- I do love Huntington/Life -- but right after it blooms at least half the leaves turn yellow, so it's a bit higher maintenance than I'd like. But it's still quite young (year 2) so maybe it will have more roots soon and can support its blooms without freakingout afterwards. It is pretty and has a lovely fragrance. Okay geniuses -- totally off topic -- not even about roses! But how do I get old tea stains/deposits out of my go-to tea thermos that I take to work?

I'm not sure Lady butterflies can grow on artichokes or centaureas, though. I'm not even sure how well they do on non-native thistles, although I suspect that is okay. My identification skills are not very good at present, but I believe I saw Lady butterflies this morning when I was out at a local park. I saw some medium-size butterflies with a herky-jerky sort of flight and some sort of triangular pattern in the forewing. There were loads of thistle plants in bloom. When I identified them last year, they were bull thistles. There were also tons of tiger swallowtails, Cabbage Whites, and sulfurs enjoying the nectar.

I think the beautiful thistle Sherry had a picture of might have been Cirsium rivulare 'atropurpureum.' I think it is from Japan. If that will serve the purpose, it certainly could be worth adding to the butterfly garden. It is very pretty.

If anyone wants I have a plethora or thistles that I would be happy to share. They are pretty in bloom and prettier off my yard.

There are some beautiful native thistles out there that I would certainly grow if I found seeds for them. Check out Cirsium discolor; a native host plant for painted ladies.

Try Globe Thistle. It serves the same function, provides excellent nectar and is a lot more handsome than its ugly stepsisters.
Painted Ladies will also use members of the Mallow family, esp Hollyhocks as host plants.
Painted ladies will also eat a great variety of members of the Aster Family as well, even overlapping c the American Lady's narrower diet.
