How persistent is Black Death?

Hi everyone~Having lost a few chrysalises and just recently a first instar (the egg came in on some milkweed I cut for the last two cats, and I put it on a stem of MW I had sitting in water waiting for it to releaf, and the cat turned black) I am wondering what to do about the MW outside. I don't where the infected MW came from since I have MW in so many different areas.

How should handle fall clean up? Is there anything I can do to try to reduce the amount of virus in my garden? Is it in the soil? Will the freezing temps kill it off, or does it persist forever?

Thanks so much.
