I don't see why they couldn't live there. When I was a kid, we used to get them from the creek (pronounced krik) behind my house. The water there was always moving & that's where we found them. Have they pinched your fingers yet? They have to be picked up just right so they can't grab you. I used to keep land snails as pets too.

I've gotten pinched more then a few times. We catch them pretty often. Madi caught a big one today but I didn't want to take it home because she had a huge clutch of eggs under her tail and I didn't want to jeopardize their hatching.

I think I accidently introduced a non native land snail into this area about 10 years ago. I really hope that I didn't but I just don't know. It's quite possible that it came in on a shipment of plants that I got from DH and who knows where they could have originated? They are beautiful land snails. Their shell is round, predominantly yellow with brown, black & gray stripes and they get to be about the size of a quarter. I'd never seen them before and the kids' friends thought they were pretty and took them home to their yards. The only places I've seen this particular snail is around my house and the homes of the kids that took some. I haven't found a pic online. I'll take a photo tomorrow and maybe someone can ID them for me. They don't seem to be destructive either as they appear to eat dead plant matter. I see them sliming across my plants but they don't eat the healthy foliage, at least I don't think they do.

I'm not sure, I think you would have enough water movement but maybe it would be too deep? I usually find them in shallow running water. BTW did you decide to go ahead with the project of turning the hottub into a pond or are you still thinking about it?

That's a good point Shawn. I do find them in pretty shallow creek water.

Eventually I'll get that tub turned into a pond. I cleared out most of the brush this afternoon! I need to get some sand trucked in to fill it at least a third of the way up. It's too deep to use as is, 5'. I was thinking that I'd fill it maybe to the level of the benches. I'd also like to make some ledges on the side and thought I could use bricks on top of the sand to build up specific areas. It's just a matter of doing it and I can't get it done by myself. DH is just so busy with work and the farm. I don't even think my incessant whining will work for this chore. lol It took me 5 years to talk him into digging me a pond to begin with. BTW I'll get your box out on Mon or Tues.

They will live at least here in a small pond or baby swimming pool. They usually have a home in the mud somewhere. They feed in running water put a rock in there so it can crawl out of the water in case it wants to.

I can't pile up that many rocks. If it wanted out it would need to climb on a plant.

They usually live in shallow water. Doesn't have to be running. They raise them in flooded rice patties in Louisiana. I saw them in deep holding ponds in Hawaii as well but they were swimming and feeding right on the edge.
