Red-Spotted Purple!!! host plant?!??????

Ack! I saw my first ever RSP today, and wouldn't you know it, it laid an egg right before my eyes on what I think in an ornamental cherry(plum?) tree in our front yard (we did not plant this tree - so I don't know exactly what it is).

The leaves are dark purple/maroon and is covered in dainty white blossoms in the spring.

What are RSP's host plants that people know of?? ack! FAQs say willows and poplars, as well as members of the rose family (which this tree is perhaps a member).

Are RSP of the "dumb" variety - would they lay their eggs on a plant that is not in their host family? This tree is very segregated from anything else in the front yard (save for Bishops weed, mint, and a barberry).

Anyone have luck raising them on crabapple (cause that we do have)/fruit trees? Or have any suggestions??

anyone,.,.. anyone??

Thanks!!!!

Excitedly yours,

Sandy
