recommendation for brugmansia 'vine' for Los Angeles

Can anyone suggests what would be a good brug to grow on a lattice over a patio facing southwest with lots of sun in the LA area? It's USDA zone 10, SUNSET 22. I'm confused because I thought in the past I'd seen brugmansias trained on arbors in vine-like configurations, but in researching them online and in the Sunset Gardening guide, I'm only seeing shrubs or small trees.

Brugs are normally shrubs but can be trained into tree form from my experience. Others may be able to jump in with more information!

I have seen one brug pictured like this, I think it is on the forum under a thread called 'unusual ways of growing brugs~braided brugs' but I'm not sure. Maybe you could train one like this since you are in zone 10 and your brugs wont need to die back to the ground. I'm not sure what would be the best one, maybe a Charles Grimaldi would do well? See what the others say, I don't know how one would go about doing this.

You don't also mention how much width you are willing to give this hedge; an equally important consideration for best selection. I am a big fan of the Lavender Star Flower, Grewia occidentalis, which can easily be kept narrow at less than 2 feet in width, is fast growing, and also has colorful blooms. I'd also suggest that a wire fence framework for an evergreen vine such as Star Jasmine, Trachelospermum jasminoides or one of the Trumpet vines such as Clytostoma callistegioides, or Creeping Fig, Ficus repens might be good choices. If you are willing to install a root barrier, even common old Golden Bamboo, Phyllostachys aurea or Pseudosasa japonica might be good choices for such a screen. I often prefer to use a bamboo as a screen rather than a shrub/hedge, because it is less work to keep the width and height in bounds. Podocarpus gracilior is also a much used hedge material in Los Angeles, for good reason, and things like Pineapple Guava, Feijoa sellowiana might also work well for you.

This is just too unreal about the Angel Trumpet. Must be a different variety. I only know my'ne are called Angels Trumpet. I bought a little growing stem from a elderly lady who potted them in many colors. Nothing was said about them being poison. She would probably be dead as well as my husband and I. My'ne gets about 15ft. Georgeous pink upside down trumpets. I have potted cutting for everyone I know. North Tx. does'nt have as much growing luck. I havent tried to eat them ! I have bought a purple double that died last year and is coming back now. You people must have another strain.I will find out from the little old lady I bought them from. I bought more online. Now don't you know they could be sued???

AllanRandall, The Lemon Meringue (LM) is actually one that does seem to do well in the heat and humidity here. I kept one in a large pot for 3 years and it grew to be about 4 feet tall and made lots of Ys (brugs make Ys then flower, then grow, then more Ys then flower, etc) and branches and flowers a lot, both flushes and flowers between the flushes. So she has the potential to be able to stay smaller and in a pot. You would just have to take her out every year or so and root prune and amend the potting soil etc. The LM bloom is thick and waxy. Sometimes they are a little deformed but not often. The fragrance is not as strong as some of the other brugs. My dh thinks that is a good thing since he thinks they all smell like lemon dish soap, lol but to each their own...It does not set seed pods easily but like I said, it does flower prolifically. This year, I planted her out in the ground to see what she will do. I took some back-up cuttings just in case. ~SJN

I think what you want to do is just grow a brug next to a trellis. When it gets tall enough you can tie the branches over the top of the trellis & keep tying them as they grow. The flowers will hang down through the holes.

I agree with Linda. I don't see any way that you could grow a brug on a trellis the way you would a passion vine or a clematis. You might be able to train them as an espalier (sp?) but other then what Linda described I'm not sure what you could do. If you want a brug like vine what about a Solandra maxima (Chalice vine)?

I think I must have seen something like the Solandra maxima or one of the beaumonitas and somehow in my memory it transformed into a brug.

If one was to grow them over a trellis and let them hang down like in the photo (from the link above) I think it would prob be best to use a versicolor type variety because the trumpets would hand vertically where you could see them better. I bet if you could mount some large cattle panel fencing for support or make an huge arch out of it and plant the brugs on each side and train them to hang over the arch it would be pretty.
