Cut off Leaves Rolled up?

I sprayed early and thought I had beat the leafrooers this year. Now all of a sudden many of my Cannas have the tightly closed new leaves. Can I cut that off? If I do will it continue to put out new leaves and bloom? Advise what to do.

Leafrollers are almost impossible to beat. The leaves shed most anything you spray or sprinkle on them. And the leaf roller moths are present all season. So one spraying won't stop them. They'll find somewhere else to lay a few eggs and those will hatch and come and invade your gardens. It's a season long battle.

Are your leaves sewn shut? Do you see silken threads tying them closed? If so, the moth has been there and laid her eggs. If you don't see threads, it's probably not leaf rollers.

You can cut the leaves off and the plant will regrow and bloom. Or you can break the threads and open the leaves and pick off the leafrollers. If you have a pond with fish, toss the leafrollers in there. The fish love them.

Do NOT compost the leaves or you simply perpetuate the problem. Bag them to be hauled away from your property.

I have quite a few and the leafroller is my enemy. I find spraying every 2 weeks with a generic pesticide that kills caterpillars works well. I bring it up to every 10 days if it's rainy season (summer in florida). Or, just keep an eye for the first sign of trouble, and whip out the gun

I pull only those dead leaves that come off with no resistance. At this time of year there are alot of dead leaves that do not come off easily. I leave them for protection, but many people do clip them back. I really cannot say which method is better, because both seem to work. I leave the iris leaves and tree leaves that have fallen around the iris, because I consider it the more 'natural' state. Since I live in a cold area, I do not get much winter rot. Those who live in the South are probably better off clearing around the winter iris as warmer weather encourages rot and mold organisms. Laetitia

Could be aphids. Might be spider mites if you notice some webbing used to curl the leaf to provide shelter for eggs. You're in zone 7? It also could be greenhouse white flies. They like fruit and veggie plants. Look for little yellow eggs on the underside of leaves. Adults cut and suck the juice out of leaves leaving them limp and susceptible to disease. It's hard to say with symptoms crossing many possible culprits. Inspect with a magnifying glass if you got one. I'd spray leaves with a fine blast of water in the morning and mix a mild batch of soapy insecticide and hit 'em with that. If you have a serious infestation hit 'em with pyrethrum or rotenone. In the late spring budworms or caterpillars wrap themselves up in a leaf blanket and then eat their way out. Sprays don't effect them as the leaf protect the worms so hand picking off the leaves is the best method to get rid of them.
