Rue Needed Desperately

I am in PA and I have 7 GST caterpillars. My rue is almost gone and the supplier who was sure he would get more never did. Does any one have any they can sell me or advice on where to find some?

My rue seems to have roots that grow quickly. If it gets potbound, it will die without potting up. Is there any chance you have them planted too close?

Why can't you put a heavy (2 or 3 inch diameter) wood curtain rod right across the bay window and let the panels frame the bay? Take down the two prints to the left of the bay and you have plenty of room for full, lovely curtain panels on wooden rings. Select a wonderful curtain fabric and redo the seat upholstery on a companion fabric or a solid. Your dining room has a lot of elements that, taken separately, are all great, but they are not consistent in terms of quality or style. I personally like the chandelier--- it dresses up your dining furniture in exactly the way French country is supposed to look. But the fabric upholstery doesn't add anything. IMO the two elements that are way off are the unframed canvas---not nice enough for the room, and the mirror, which looks sort of "olde worlde Tuscan". Putting a bench in that window will block a lot of the light, and will not provide any really useful seating. Who would eat there at a tv tray or small table or with a plate in their lap when the others are seated at the table? So, I would replace the mirror with something bigger and square or rectangular and gold leaf and fancy. Put beautiful curtains on the bay on a gorgeous gold painted or gold leaf fluted rod held up with brackets. Reupholster the chairs in a beautiful solid color. Take the two framed prints and put them where the canvas is now (and move the canvas to another room entirely).

Can you post more photos so we see the breakfast room and other windows? Are there other arched windows near by that match/balance the kitchen window on that side of the home? As Lyn mentioned, how would removing that arched window effect the exterior? I hate to comment on things you did not ask about, but I feel obligated to tell you that moving the cooktop to where the fridge currently is is a very bad idea. 😩 First, it puts your cooking zone in what looks like a major walkway from that entry door in the photo (love the bench btw!). Is that a back entry from the garage? Do you bring in groceries that way? I won’t get into the toxic cooking fumes debate, but I can only imagine the cleaning of that window being a constant annoyance. I do love the look of two taller and more narrow windows flanking the sides of the stove hood though. I would suggest that instead. However, I would NEVER EVER put the cooking zone in a major foot traffic isle. That is flat out asking for a hospital visit! The cooking zone should always be in the isle most protected from passerby’s. Another bad idea is how the oven is too far from the cooktop with a barrier island in between that you must manuever around. Also the only landing is on the island right in front of someone seated at the bar. I hope that is not an undercounter oven on the island under one of your prep zones on the island. Your other prep zone would be to the right of the sink where you would have the DW underneath you. That is annoying because you cannot clean as you go. If someone needs a glass or something in the dw, you must stop what you are doing and move out of the way. You are going from a perfectly functional design, to a disfunctional and potentially dangerous design. This just makes me sad. I honestly am shocked a kitchen designer did this design. Is it a certified KD you used or is this a cabinet salesperson in the cabinet department at a big box store who has no clue what they are doing? Alstroemerias in flower - yep. See, I could take a photo as proof but you are just going to have to take my word for it. They are an outstanding plant - tall and vivid, and in bloom for months and months as long as I keep pulling the spent blooms. The cultivar name is 'Etna'. TBF, they do have the benefit of a tall, south-facing pale brick wall. Once again, I am steeling myself for another attempt to sort this photo thing. Will indeed get 12 year old to help. I am going to try to post from the phone...I have a recollection that I have tried that, various times, when a screen pops up, baldly stating 'Chrome has stopped working'...and I never have any idea where to go after that. Sigh, years ago, I was a perfectly competent user of Macs and Windows, able to upload, download, burn off CDs, use peer to peer (for torrents), CAD design, romp through most software etc.etc. Then my camera and PC died within weeks of each other. Chromebooks were cheap (and I was broke) and hyped as being the best for simpletons (not quite in those words but I am sure you get the gist). I resisted a smartphone until the pandemic when the offspring nagged me almost to death, but I have never really got on board with them (spends more time in a drawer than in actual use). Have become almost a Luddite (and definitely a shy and socially awkward recluse, so I bloody loved lock-down).

You can also use fennel, parsley and dill. They don't mind switching food, as long as they get to eat. Just today I switched my parsley eatin' cats to fennel, and they didn't miss a beat.

Others here have purchased the above items at organic grocers, but you have to wash the herbs with soap and water and rinse well. Even organic pest control can be fatal to caterpillars.

Have you tried plant wholesalers in your area? Is there a Botanical Garden near you? They might be able to suggest where to find some. What about your local chapter of NABA? Below is contact info, unfortunately no email or phone was provided.

If you have no luck, I can still get rue, fennel and parsley at a nursery near me and would be happy to ship you some. I'm pretty sure they would ship OK using the technique for shipping Hosta, which I've done before. They are shipped bare root, wrapped in wet paper towels, then plastic. I'm pretty sure I could come up with an insulated styrofoam box since I work in a hotel -- we get our fresh fish in those.
I would have to know by tomorrow morning, since I wouldn't be able to get to the nursery during the week.

They will not use parlsey, fennel or dill, thats BSTs

I agree, BSTs will eat rue AND parsley/dill/fennel, but GSTs won't.

Shady Oaks sells rue; might want to ask about the ToT because it usually takes me at least a week to get my plant orders in. I bought the rue I have now at a local nursery, but as they're starting to do end-of-season clearances, it's much harder to find. Might have to call around to more nurseries in the area...

Thank you every one for your suggestions. I am aware that BSTs use parsley, dill, fennel and that GSTs only use rue, wild lime, and some trees from the citrus family. I have already spoken to Shady Oaks, they are out of rue. No one seems to have gotten very many shipments this year. The one place where I got my plants originally was supposed to get in another order and never did.

Do you have a Freecycle group in your area? It is very easy to sign up - all you need is a Yahoo id. You could try posting a "Want" for Rue plants. It is an unusual item, but someone in the Freecycle network might have access to some.

You could try finding some Prickly Ash (Zanthoxylum americanum) locally. It's the native GST host plant in northern areas. Since you've got GST's in your area, it's likely that there are some plants near you. Here's the distribution of Prickly Ash in PA:

Thanks everyone for taking the time to respond. We dont have any citrus plants in Pennsylvania. At least not that I know of. I did try ebay but no one was selling rue. I will try the prickly ash distribution link. Thank you for providing it, Northeastwisc, and that you everyone for your suggestions.
