sure are few and far between this summer. i have a number of butterfly attracting plants in my garden: joe pye weed, echinacea, nepeta, milkweed, bee balm, honeysuckle, and blanket flower (to mention a few). i have seen one monarch and two white butterflies---that's it. even when on the highway, don't hardly see a monarch flying.

i am guessing much of it is weather related---one way or the other.

I think that this same discussion occurs here every year during June and July. Everyone is looking for the butterflies and is dismayed because they aren't seeing many, myself included! :o) My biggest butterfly months here in NW GA are actually August-November. I suppose it is different for people who are north of me. It's been pretty darn quiet here in my yard over the past month, and I am only seeing an occasional Tiger SWT and some Skippers. The thing that is concerning to me right now is that my northern friends don't seem to have the Monarchs that they should have. Has anyone here reported having a lot of Monarchs right now?

Hello Bandjzmom !! yes, I have Monarch butterfly sightings in my yard:-) that happened since I bought crown flower plants from walmart. I have 2 caterpillars so far, one pupated yesterday. I have seen Chinese swallowtails hovering in my area daily, and I have gulf fritillaries as resident butterflies in my yard. I live in west Oahu, Hawaii btw :-), Aloha!!

I saw my first butterfly of the season this week. It was orange-ish but I didn't get close enough to see what it was for sure, maybe a Goatweed Leafwing. It seems early but it won't get frozen anytime soon. Our forecast looks pretty warm for now. There aren't many flowers blooming in my yard, just a little creeping phlox and daffodils. I think I'll put out some fruit. I have some bananas that are getting too ripe.

I saw my first gulf frit yesterday and released my third anise swallowtail yesterday as well. I was so excited because some years I don't see any gulf frits at all and last year I was thrilled when in July I saw a female gulf frit laying eggs on my passionvine, or at least what was left of it because I had just cut it severely back because it was taking over some pipe vine and I hadn't seen any gulf frits to speak of in a couple of years. In fact, I had just cut it back again earlier this week since I never expected to see one for a long while. When will I learn to be a bit more patient? But things look promising. Murray

Aggie - most hops rhizomes (don't try from seed, it takes way too long to get a mature plant because they have to form rhizomes) are sold between March and May each year. The best places to buy from are beer companies that sell their rhizomes. However, I did get some rhizomes from both Pinetree Garden Seeds and Thyme Garden (the Golden hops, which is very pretty) this last year. You can check them out on the Internet. I know, I had to be patient all last year waiting until early spring to order mine. You might want to place your order in January or February, though, because they run out quickly. All those beer drinkers out there! LOL! You usually get a set of instructions with the rhizomes on how to plant, where to plant, and other cultivation information. The rhizomes are not very expensive. I paid about $2-3 per rhizome. Susan

Monarch sightings are down this year in the North Central part of the USA. We have seen a few, but not the numbers that have been seen in previous years. There are multiple causes for this, and one factor that stands out is the drought last year that affected Texas and Oklahoma. There were not very many flowers around to provide nectar to migrating monarchs, and there was not much milkweed around to serve as a host plant for female monarchs with eggs. I think that conditions have improved in the southwest USA, so maybe next year will be better.

I don't know if New Jersey counts as north, but it is north of Georgia, I guess! At any rate, I was at a local park two days ago where there is a large field of common milkweed, and I saw at least half a dozen monarchs flying around. Then, yesterday, I walked past the little pond near my Town hall where there is a good deal of swamp milkweed growing. I spotted a nice fat monarch caterpillar at least an inch and a half long. That was a welcome sight!

I'm certainly encouraged by recent sightings around Madison, WI just of late (Key operative word being LATE...). I saw another Monarch today and have been raising a steady, if small, number of Monarch cats.I have had a lot more BSTs and cats as well.
