Kalanchoe questions from a novice

Hello! I just inherited a Kalanchoe from my boss, and I have some questions regarding pruning and propagation. I only have lousy iPhone pics right now, but hopefully you can see it well enough to see my concerns.

First of all, I'd like to know how to prune it properly to achieve a full plant. One branch, for instance, has gotten very long and woody with leaves only at the top (See second pic). Is there any way to prune fairly low on the woody portion of the branch to encourage growth, or can I only cut at new growth?

Secondly, I also have some cuttings from another Kalanchoe, and I've read different methods of rooting them. How might I best go about this? Do I need to leave the cuttings to dry for a few days before placing in soil? Or should they go straight into water or soil? I also have rooting hormone, if that is recommended.

I'd appreciate any advice, as I'm relatively new to plant maintenance and have a history of a not-so-very-green thumb. ;)

Thanks so much!

Melissa
