dead dry soil, what will grow?

Hi Everyone.

Hope your gardening is going great! I am having a bit of a problem with dry soil against the front of my house. House faces East and I have a maple tree, which seems to take all moisture.

I have tried many different flowers and small bushes,nothing lives even with watering.

Are there any ornamental grasses out there that peolpe have tried in dry soil, partial shade?

Any suggestions would be appriciated: Hamiltonblooms.

Is it dry and hard?

For water retention you will need to add compost perhaps a couple times in a year. Plus add some manure if possible.

Ornamental grasses are an excellent choice, most especially Karl Foerster. I also like the variegated and dwarf forms of the miscanthus varieties.

You can also add succulents - like sedum autumn joy which produces a rust coloured flower. Very pretty and interesting when paired with the grass.

How about lambs ears? There are the large, dwarf varieties available.

This is all I can think of for now.

You definately need some drought tolerant plants in that situation. I have a similar bed and have had some success with penstemon, false sunflower, gaillardia, spurge, lambs ears, and sedum. These well require some hours of full sun; if it is a more shady bed you could try lamium, solomon seal, goatsbeard, barrenwort, and lungwort. These are all pretty tolerant of dry shade conditions especially once established. Good luck!

Ima's smooth. I read it like a fisherman throws a net. +oM, Don't go with the strain Ambrolauri. They're no good. I was on the phone with a friend today and he said he was thinking of ordering extra fir for his grafting and said he was going to ask the supplier if they had the 'hardier' nordmann strain. I wasn't sure what he meant and brought up "Ambrolauri" -which he had no clue about! Apparently, there are colder seed provinces similarly as with lots of species... three come to mind immediately: Pinus armandii, Cedrus libani, and I'll throw in Pinus parviflora because he and I spoke of that today. Osprey, good to know. I'm going to keep notes on the conifers you can grow because there are always creepers coming in and you're not around like you used to be. Thanks. How dry should the tubers/soil be before and during storage?

When some one says to dry the the tubers, they mean to dry them to the point where they are not wet on the outside and the cut portions have healed and dried too. If you dig them when it is dry outside and the tubers are already dry it may only take one day. If you dig them after very wet weather it may take five or more days. The idea is to get them to the perfect combination of dry and cured but not dried out or too wet. And then you want to preserve that ideal moisture content throughout storage. If you put them into very dry vermiculite or wood shavings they will dry out too much. Many people are wrapping the tubers in plastic wrap when they are at the proper moisture level and the plastic keeps them at that proper moisture level. If you use vermiculite, wood shavings or peat moss it must be slightly moistened(very slightly!) and the mixture of vermiculite or whatever placed into a plastic bag of some sorts to preserve the correct moisture level. Tubers left out of a storage medium will shrivel. In some parts of the USA there is very little humidity, the tubers will dry quickly in exposed storage mediums. In more humid areas like the Northwest, that happens much less. So in one sentence: Dry the tubers to the point that they are dry to the touch and the cut portions have healed, then preserve that level of moisture throughout storage.

This is my soil exactly. We live in a sugar maple woods, smattered with black cherry, beech and walnut, with soil that is sand and powdered clay so any water the soil gets, either gets stolen by the maples or drained quickly away to the gravel bed below. Still we have an abundance of things that grow here... Jack-in-the-pulpit by the thousands Blue Cohosh by the thousands Dog tooth violets by the hundreds Wild violets Christmas Fern loves it in our dry ground as well Crested Shield Fern Hart's Tongue Fern Male Fern doing very well Nannyberry bush Witch Hazel bush Serviceberry bush and despite the totally WRONG conditions we have a Highbush Cranberry (normally likes acidic and wet) that is thriving in our basic and dry conditions. We have a TON of other stuff but it all tends to need watering a couple times a week. In these dry conditions it seems that trial and error needs to be accepted as one of your methods as well as a lot of research into sun/soil conditions and plants that thrive in them. It also seems to be easier to grow things from seed in these conditions so that the plant/shrub/tree is adapted to the poor soil right from the start. We have a Redbud that we bought that has struggled along but it has thrown 2 very healthy seedlings about 20 feet away from it that are thriving after sprouting from seed. Find out what works for people in these conditions and then put a "WANTED" list for seeds over at the seed exchange forums. Have fun... Barb southern Ontario, CANADA zone 6a

Alisa, Have you bought a succulents plant look all healthy, leaves firm. When you bring it back home. In one or 2 weeks does not look healthy, leaves drop or wrinkles and so on..... Me in the hdb , don't have the same environment as the farm.... plenty of sun whole day, have the heat, dry up the mix fast. I sort of realized that the mixed is not suitable for my environment. It don't dry up fast, not enough sun n heat.... After RIP many plants, I came up with my own mixed and that dry up almost within a day. Now less causality... Sorry for the long boring story.....

I have the exact same setup - east facing strip against the house under a maple - and I have my share of problems as well.
But right now the best performers have been hellebores, and they are now among my favourite plants. They grow about a foot tall and spread over time.
I also have barrenwort and lungwort, and as debbie noted above, they do well in dry shade.
I'm still trying to decide on some shrubs for this area myself, so I can't help you there. Some euonymus varieties should work though.
However, you also need to start adding some organic matter to the area to help with water retention....shredded leaves and/or compost will do wonders. And you have to be mindful of the rain shadow created by your house. Just because it rains doesn't mean things have been watered....I made this mistake a couple years ago.
