got my Horn Canna Farm shipment today!!!

i am hooked on cannas now. started last year with only tropicanna (bought it at home depot because leaves looked real cool) and then added robert kemp.

today received firebird, stadt felbach, red king humbert and journey's end. ten of each. spent most of afternoon planting and now just have to wait and see.

the tubers i got were very good size. can't beat their prices and believe me i've checked.

I'm glad to hear you were pleased with your order. I just placed an order there myself for ten different varieties. Like you, I checked out the various pricing options -- and Horn Canna Farm was definitely the cheapest, even though the shipping price was steep.

I'm not sure when my shipment will arrive. It's too early to plant here yet.

I got cannas from Horn last year, they grew well, everything seemed to be what it was supposed to be. Very cheap, and when you consider the weight of canna, shipping is pretty reasonable. A few of the tubers were a bit smaller than I was expecting, most were very nice. I only got one of each variety, and one didn't come up. For the price I didn't complain, & I gather Horn's doesn't guarantee after you plant them.

Do the plants have to be destroyed? I'd destroy diseased plants if that's needed in order to keep them from wiping out similar plants that we are growing (like if one ill tomato plant risks the health of 91 other plants), or if close neighbors have large numbers of the same kind of plant. But aside from that I'd grow them out and collect seed off the ones that demonstrate the greatest will to live. The goal would be to select toward getting my own home grown population of plants that are either immune to the disease or that can suffer an infection and then recover. I wouldn't save bulbs or plant divisions because that would just give me the same genetics, but seed offers genetic diversity. I always keep my eye out for the individual plant that's just a bit more ornery than his neighbors. It might be the one that still tries to grow after the first hard frost, or the one that gets shredded to pieces by Japanese beetle but then recovers and finishes out the year with abundant growth. I'd certainly grab seed off of any that are able to tough it out long enough to reproduce. Then trash all of the current plants and grow out all of the seeds next year. It may be worth looking at ill plants this year so you could raise your own cannas from seed and get away from the genetics of the major nursuries stock. Lynda

I Karyn, I recommended Horn Canna here awhile back. Most of their cannas are fairly easy to come by. I will be turning in an order shortly. If I can get another job.LOL The cannas at Karcheshy's are a little more unusual although they are pricey if your on Social Security like us. I'm nicking canna seeds as I type this post. I have several different ones I'll share with you when they come up. I have some unusual ones here in these seeds. I gathered them myself from a home the church owns. They are mostly pastel colors which I have none of at this time. I forgot which cannas you have Karyn, email me and I'll tell you what I have I can share with you. Alot of my cannas I grow for the foliage and not the blooms. The remind me of small banana trees kind of. I'm planting a ton of them down near the creekbed we just cleared out. Oh these little paths and walkways I'm creating are going to be the death of me yet. We're taking down some fencing and putting up another fence about 5 acres back. Today we dug all the holes for the post. Even with the post hole digger on the tractor it was very much like work when your our age. I keep telling George he's overdoing it but he will not listen. He just says if I'm going to die, I'm not going to die in the recliner just sitting. His heart must be doing alot better. Just 2 weeks ago he couldn't walk 5 ft without being exhausted. I'm going to set on him this evening and not let him do anymore. Mainly cause I've done all I can do today and I'm not a heart patient but at the rate he's going I will be before long. Thanks ya'll. I was sad to see right after I posted this that Horn's was out for this season. I have a friend who is going to send me some for postage so maybe next year I can look into Horn's again. I just can't believe they can sell theirs for $1 to $1.50 when every other place wants so much more and all I've ever heard about them is good. I guess I've learned about putting things off til later. ;-) Nancy

Wish I had realized the price went down when you buy more,I would have spent a few dollars more & got bunches more :) Very nice rhizomes for the price, some were a bit smallish, but all very healthy. I have one from Horn that hasn't come up yet, but still seems firm when I dug down. I certainly haven't found anything cheaper. I actually ordered mine in the fall, they don't charge your credit card til the order ships, and I noticed that they ran out of a few of the choicer varieties by Feb.

how long does it usually take from the time you plant them to the time they shoot up?

of the 40 rhizomes (sorry i called them tubers before, now i know better) i planted on the 6th of march i counted 5 already with shoots 3 - 6 inches out of the ground and one of those, the red king humbert, has a leaf unfurling.

I just ordered 10 from Horn yesterday. Hope they come soon

I didn't realize that they would grow so well in a hot and humid zone 9. Luckily, I dug up mine from old house (Chicago), so I have some passalongs from my neighbors.

This year was my first ordering from Horn's, It sure wont be my last:) Very happy with what I got,
I got 2 each of 26 different one's, I thought my $12.00 shipping was a GREAT deal, for 52 Canna & most they sent 3 of each, compared to some of the shipping charges I have paid in the past.
Does anyone know of a reasonable (Under $20.00) place I can find a White One?
