I have a dandelion digger for 15 years. It works beautifully and that's all I need. For other weeds......I just pull them out by hand after raining.

Thank you for giving me idea to weed after ground is wet (rain/sprinklers)that would make it much easier.

How does your dandelion digger look like? I have seen one with long handle, clamps and leaver at the end. I thought it was something new. Or do you have just one which looks like metal stick with V cut out at the end?

I have rather large area so I was hoping to get some feedback on what tools other people are using for weeding.

I have seen one I am considering, but never tried it before:

Hound Dog Garden Cultivator (Home Depo 29.97). It has rototiller with spikes on long handle.

Does anyone has this one? Is it any good?

I love my new dandelion weeder - the one you described. With clamps and a lever. It works well with small to medium sized dandelions. For more established dandelions, it will take a bit of effort - perhaps using a pitch fork to loosedn the soil and to dig it right out. You'd need to remove all of their roots.

The V - type one - great for small dandelions, shallow rooted weeds.

The garden cultivator may work well in a weed free bed, but I wouldn't advise using it to clear a bed full of weeds. Especially if you have dandelions because if their roots get cut up into small pieces, bear in mind, each has the potential of growing into a new plant. So instead you may be spreading the weeds.

First, I'd like to approach the subject of mulching.
I never used to do it. For years I gardened without mulching. Then we moved and the gardening projects got bigger. Bigger piece of land = bigger gardens. Working fulltime with a family, gardening time is somewhat limited. And of course, the weather is not always co-operative.
In 2003, I decided to go 'organic', and began making my own compost. Last year I mulched a garden for the first time. All of a sudden, I found myself enjoying this garden vs weeding and watering all the time. Furthermore, the compost which I mulched with was initially slightly unfinished, but by this spring it had turned into beautiful loamy soil - and that's a rarity here on the roacky coast of N.S.!!
This year I am redoing all the gardens and mulching with compost made during the winter. In the garden beds which have already been done... well, I am watching them grow and not weeding and watering every time I walk through them.

In terms of weeding, I use a simple little three claw tool - not sure what the term is for those. I loosen the soil, fluff it, and run my fingers through it which seems to bring the roots to the surface, and then I hot compost all which kills seeds and roots. (My mother taught me the fluffing technique when I was a child and I truly enjoyed gardening and weeding with her!)
I do have a 'claw' with the long handle, but use it mostly for removeing sod from new areas in which I'd like to make new gardening beds. Also, my plants are too close together to use this tool.

I'd love to get the Dandelion remover - future purchase!

My favorite is a hand held weeder that has a flat band of metal curved around the end which cultivates and weeds very easily. I liked it so much my DH built me a long handled one so I don't have to be on my knees, using a discarded band saw blade and a long wooden pole. Don't have the heart to tell him the best part of gardening is being in the dirt!

It weeds, it cultivates, it mixes in compost and amendments, it will loosen the toughest clay, it digs holes for easy transplanting of perennials/annuals and bulbs...really light weight and wide grip for easy use. I think its the exact same tool that LauraBC uses as her description fits. It's the best $12.00 I've ever spent. It's called the 'Garden Bandit' - Canadian made by a company in BC...available thru out Canada. I have the hand-held one (as shown above) but they do sell the telescopic one as well...wish I had shares in that company as it's simply amazing and has replaced every weeder,hoe,claw,digger in my basket - I carry it in my back pocket.
