hi newb .. right??? i am not up to speed on B's .. but genetically speaking.. a plant can only have one color flower ... so i would suspect that there are 3 plants in that container ... PRESUMING ... those arent cut flowers for a pic ... [as there is something weird how the green leaves dont all face the sun in the same direction .. perhaps an indication of cuttings.. rather than plants] the plants seem rather small for what little i know about B's ... but maybe there are some newer dwarfs??? now.. that said ... there are some flowers... that open one color.. and can fade to other colors ... but i dont see that in this pic ... one that comes to mind.. for example .... is a rose.. which opens cream ... and then blushes to pink and then red with age ... Double Delight by name.. see link ... and OMG.. if you can only grow one rose.. this be it... besides the incredible colors.. its scent is to die for.. but i digress ... [oh.. and this one involves two colors... your pic implies a third color ... and i simply know of no plant that changes over three colors ... ] just a short lesson for a newb ... i hope someone rolls thru with a specific answer to your B question ... ken ps: B's can and should be heavily cut back once a year ... so to ask what the average spread is.... depends if they are properly pruned.. I had one for a good long period, but inexplicably, it died last winter. I liked it because it bloomed quite early and then put on another show in the late fall. Neither show was overwhelming, and it was never as floriferous as other cultivars, but I liked it a lot. The scent was wonderful and the flower colour unusual. To be fair, it was also planted in an overcrowded bed, and might have produced a better flower show with the room it deserved. I think I planted it about six years ago, or even longer, when it was first released.

If you don't mind mail ordering, Goodwin Creek Nursery has it. While Forest Farm Nursery is not listing it right now, I know they have had it in the past. They may have it, but not in sufficient quantities to list in the catalog, so you could call them and ask. Both these nurseries are reputable and you will not be disappointed with their stock. Um, I've seen this and it's not as nice as the hybrids between it and other species of butterfly bush. Have you considered Buddleia weyeriana? I think it's nicer than the straight species. My pink hyrangea has survived two years in Florida...the bush is protected from the sun and is hevily mulched...It is not a huge plant, but I get a bunch of pretty pink flowers from it every year The elephant ear behind it is huge now - and as it grew, the hydrangea doubled in size! I think it liked a personal umbrella :) So, should we try starting cuttings for each other then? :) Olya p.s....our house is pink too...no, it is not my favorite color, and not the color of choice for the house...we just cannot get around to re-paint it :)
