Some recent pictures

This was taken this spring when the weigela was about the only thing blooming ... this tiger was REALLY into this bloom ...

This has definitely been the year of the zebra - I've released three, have three more about to eclose, 5 cats and 14 more eggs.

I so rarely get a chance to get a picture of these wood nymphs, they like to hide deep in the tangle of the garden ...

I released two monarchs this week, I'm hoping they leave me some eggs.

A meadow fritallary ....

A checkered skipper peaking out ....

The only black swallowtail that I have seen this year.

A clearwing hummingbird moth ...

After seeing this, I really think that Mom left out a few details about the birds and bees!

I don't know that I've ever seen a common wood nymph eating. They just seem to fly around. I still vividly remember when I caught my first one. Thought I had something extremely special because I'd never seen any butterfly like it in all my years of looking. My jets got cooled really fast when I found out it was a COMMON wood nymph. :D

Awesome pictures, as usual. I love the "skipper peaking" shot.

No I use Splenda,i tried stevia once but to me it left a bitter after taste,so I continued with the splenda. I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes this past feb,so had to change my way of eating and what I eat.I have lost 32 # since then.So I have to limit my fruit intake as well and what a shame,i used to eat a lot of it especially when the trees were loaded like now. The birds are what eat a lot of our peaches,they take a bite here and there and go from peach to peach.Really ticks me off. That's crazy about the red passion vine you had,my dh doesn't let ours get out of control.Some times he trims things too much. We're retired so we spend a lot of time in the gardens,and we both love it.In fact i'm waiting for the sun to move now so I can go finish cleaning the garden I started cleaning yesterday. The camera was a present from DH, I am not sure if it came with the camera but I don't think so. The numbers after the 70-300 are 1:4.5-5.6G. The smaller lens that I have is the 18-105mm 1:35-5.6G I am still trying to learn how to use it, still mostly use the auto settings. I love the camera because it has the continous high speed setting so it takes pictures quickly. I had taken about 20 shots during the time I was getting the Rufous in flying mode. Didn't think I had caught inflight until I checked the pictures.

Hi, Karalynn! Lovely photos! I believe your caterpillar is an orange-barred sulphur, and the birds are house finches. I've never seen one in Florida, but I know they are becoming more and more common here. Looks like you have a happy, HEALTHY garden! Congratulations, and thanks for sharing! Marcia

Hello Friends, Thanks for all the nice compliments. Zands - The Satsuma is in what is probably a 20 gallon pot. It has been in there a couple of years so I am not so sure of the Potting Mix. I do fertilize with a slow release Osmocote type fertilizer every 3 months and the occasional Iron Drench. It is a great little tree and the fruit is Great. As for the Strawberry Guava, it wasn't as hard to take out as I thought and we got it out with the root ball relatively intact. We put it into what is approximately a 30 gallon pot. It dropped some leaves initially but it has since bounced back and is doing great. It has been about 1 month since transplanting and it is still alive so I think it should be okay. esco_socal - Thanks Again, The Sapodilla was actually outside. It did okay outside the first year, it just didn't grow any. Then the 2nd year, is when it almost died. Then it bounced back and started to grow nicely, still outside, and that's when I put it into the Greenhouse and it did even better. melikeeatplants - I took out the Strawberry Guava because I want to sell it. It had been in the ground for over 20 years. Since space is such a huge commodity, and it is not one of my favorite fruits, it had to go. It actually produces like crazy, and the fruits are big and good tasting, it's just that I would rather have a Mango or Lychee tree in its place. As far as how it compares to true guavas, I guess it is kind of similar in texture to some, but I am not so sure as far as taste since there are so many different varieties of Guavas out there. Oh, how I love the Zebra Swallowtail! Thanks for giving me my "Zebra Fix"!

Can you tell me the name of the flower the Eastern Black Swallowtail is on? It is so delicate looking. Does it draw many butterflies?

Your pictures are stunning. I MUST take some photography classes!

Great pictures! When I saw you posted a new photo thread, had to click on it right away! The Zebra Swallowtails are beautiful. That is just the cutest picture of a skipper.

What wonderful pictures! Congrats, especially, on raising those zebra swallowtails - they're SO rare down here.
I've never seen a common wood nymph except in pictures, and yours is fantastic!

Thanks everyone for the kind words - I love to spend time in my butterfly garden and this way I can share it with all of you.

Betty, that is one of the agastache - I dont have the tag so I don't remember which one but I do know it is one of the ones that is hardy to zone 5. Bob did a great post on this plant at the link below.

Great photographs!
Skipper photos are usually boring. That one is fantastic!
They should take the word "Common" out of the Wood Nymph's name. I think they're quite pretty.

What is the pink flower that the Zebra Swallowtail is on? We have Zebras here in Missouri too, so I will eventually see one but I'm still waiting. My two pawpaw trees are under a foot tall.

That is a cosmos that I grew from seed, it's called Double Take and I bought the seeds from Burpee. I didn't grow them so much for the butterflies, but for me and the goldfinches.

Oh my, Jeanne, what a wonderful group of photos of butterflies that are often either overlooked or non-existent in many regions. I love them all! I really like your menage a trois of flower flies. That would be a great photo for Birds n Blooms.
