Just curious what everyone's "must-have" plants are for this year. Mine are are:

I second Sassy Cindy from Bridges Roses. This is one very nice rose. It has a paler reverse than Liberty Bell, the flower is about the same size but has has a slight fragrance that Liberty Bell does not have. Otherwise, I'd say the two are very similar. They also look very nice together. My Sassy Cindy seems quite strong, but not very bushy yet since this is it's first year. I had gotten it late last summer and it took the winter quite well, but still needs another year to mature. Although I don't have Leading Lady in my garden (my mother has it at her home), I had the pleasure of raising it for her this summer in a pot and was very impressed with it. This is another rose I might have to make room for. Another miniflora that has really taken my heart is Autumn Sunset. For the 1st year in my garden, this rose really took off and bloomed nicely. I love the color and I think this one will be a good specimen for my photography in the near future. Amy Grant is always a wonderful miniflora to keep around, that is if you can control the thrips on her first flush. I've lost many first flushes to thrips on this rose, but I found the the 3 in 1 systemic from Bayer seems to keep them under control. For the first time in 7 years, I've had a decent spring flush on AG and I was totally impressed. Soroptimist International is another wonderful miniflora more than a little worthy of garden space. This strong rose is totally nonstop in the garden. Does anyone know anything about Shenandoah, another miniflora from Bridges. I have a tendency to lean toward the miniflora and this one looks interesting. I might have to put it on my list.

What 'must have' makes your soup?

I have learned I like my soup best if I make the soup using whatever veggies I want and sometimes I throw in rice (even uncooked) with whatever seasonings such as many of you have mentioned above. Cook until done. Then, I puree the soup and then I sautee chopped onions (sometimes even when I already have onions in the first "phase" of cooking) and fresh mushrooms, sliced. Onions first and I don't caramelize them, just until soft and transparent (first since the mushrooms produce a lot of water) and add this mixture (without pureeing) to the pureed soup, I find it quite delicious. I think the "umami" taste in the mushrooms really adds a complexity. I don't eat meat so I'm not sure if this works that well with meat. I got this technique from somewhere, can't remember but I think it may have been from Dr. Dean Ornish, the heart doctor or someone promoting health. Since you don't need saturated fat or any other fat (or very little) to make a soup delicious and satisfying if you use this technique. The other thing I've recently started doing is using soy sauce instead of regular salt. Yes, yes I know that salt can be a problem. Luckily, I have blood pressure on the low side so I don't watch my salt too much. I read that soy sauce also has the "umami" taste that is complex and therefore I have found it wonderful in soup. (for those not familiar with "umami", google will produce a plentitude of results on the subject.) And one last thing I agree with whoever mentioned about a dash of basalmic vinegar (1 tablespoon or less depending on quantity of soup) seems like almost a secret ingredient. (the lemon may do the same thing) but the vinegar (I'm not sure about the lemon) is best added just before serving, I think it turns too tangy or maybe a tad bitter if cooked a long time, IMO) And another last thing, another secret ingredient I use is leeks. I know they can be somewhat expensive but they add a natural sweetness that I haven't found with anything else. And one final last thing (though not exactly on the subject) is this lovely little broth that Mark Bittman from the New York Times posted a while back. I find it nice as something to eat between meals when I'm dieting so that I am satisfied but with relatively few calories. Of course, the salt content is rather high with the soy sauce but quite delicious even though I don't usually like anything with ketchup in it. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/03/25/dining/25mini.html?_r=2&ref=dining Egg Noodles with Soy Broth Serves 4 Salt 1/3 cup soy sauce, more to taste 1/3 cup ketchup 1 tablespoon rice wine vinegar, more to taste A few drops dark sesame oil A squirt of sriracha or other Asian chile-garlic sauce 1 pound egg noodles, preferably fresh (I used 9 ounces of fresh angel hair pasta) 1. Bring a large pot of water to a boil and salt it. In a smaller pot, bring 6 cups of water to a boil; once boiling, reduce heat so water bubbles gently. 2. To the smaller pot add soy sauce, ketchup, vinegar, sesame oil if using and sriracha or chili, along with a pinch of salt. Stir and let simmer. 3. Add egg noodles to large pot; fresh noodles will be ready in just a couple of minutes; dried will take longer. When tender but not mushy, drain. Taste broth and add more soy, salt, vinegar or heat as you like. Divide noodles into bowls and pour hot broth over all.

natal, can you post a photo or link of your foot-operated trash/recycle cabs, muspic, can I see your cork floor? We're doing cork as well. The telling sign for me was when I went into a "wood flooring" showroom. When I asked where their cork display was (the whole floor was covered in the different wood flooring), I expected them to say they didn't have one (like most stores). Instead, they took me to the area where the employees stood all day. All cork. No wood. Enough said. Alabamamommy, our current house has white Corian counters. They were here when we bought the house and were afraid of them at first, but now we love them. I cook every day and never had any problem getting anything off them, including red white and tumeric. I spilled about 4 t. of tumeric on the counter when I was making keema yesterday. I got most of it right away. After I was done cooking, I saw that I missed a spot. I sprayed the spot with 409, let it sit a few minutes while I cleaned up then came back and it came right off. We've also had success with set stains using Soft Scrub, and even a baking soda paste. For the kitchen in the house we're building, my must haves were: * cork floors (I need the sound proofing for living with a brain injury and active boy!) * walk in pantry (that it is 9'x9'11" is a bonus) * all base drawers * wide aisles * pulls instead of knobs * dropped baking center so I don't have to stand on my tippy toes while kneading bread, and open on two sides so my son can help. * foot pulls for trash * hands free water faucet * island (I ended up with two. WIth my TBI, I can't go out to socialize much, so two islands give me a "little kitchen" where I can focus and not be distracted (aka, burn the house down). The second island allows others to be "in the kitchen" to help prep, socialize, clean up, etc. without being in my space. I can't wait! *desk area for printing recipes, menu planning, etc. * side by side frig. It just works best for the way we live. Funny story, when we bought our current frig, the deciding factor was the one that fix a pizza box. In the last four years, there have been less than 5 pizza boxes in there! We cut out most processed foods. So we love the side-by-side because when I cook dinner, I always make larger portions so we can get 2-4 leftovers out of it. There are packaged in lunch size containers in frozen. Everything is easy to see in the morning, when DH grabs his lunch. * Full size freezer in pantry. We currently have a chest freezer, but we'd like to be able to buy a part of a cow from a local farm, so we're getting a side by side freezer to store our meat and extra bulk goods. DH's must have, beyond what's above: * deep single sink for washing pans (Usually I clean up as I go, but often I run out of steam by the time dinner is done, so he'll do clean up. I figured if I give him the sink he wants, he'll do it even more!) * energy star appliances * water sense sinks * Sharp microwave...

Jaro: Interesting selection, I would love to see your yard. I assume it must be on the larger side to hold all those trees ;-)

I am hoping to replace my Lillium Citronelle which were eaten by rats (along with many other specialty lilies). The bulbs were in temp storage after a garden bed remake and the varmits found there way in. Next time I will buy a steel shed ;-)

Otherwise, I am trying not to buy more plants as I have several in my plant ghetto that need a space. Time to dig up some more lawn and make another bed.

If you're familiar with these names, you'll know that most of the plants are dwarf or miniature cultivars of "trees", so that in fact they don't take up a lot of space -- at least not before about 30 years in the ground.... (by which time I will probably be in the ground).

Larix lyallii is a plain species tree, but supposedly very slow growing, so again not much concern about growing space (I am particularly happy about having received 4 of those -- they're VERY hard to get, it seems.... they disappeared from the nursery's web site catalogue shortly after I ordered them, early last fall...)

Hi Jaro:

Dwarf / miniature can be tricky terms, especially here on the coast. Often a 'dwarf' specimen here will only be 15 - 20 feet high as opposed to 60 - 100 feet tall ;-)

I did Google a couple when I did not recognize the names, I will be checking out the local nursery for Abies Koreana 'Ice Breaker' and Abies Pinsapo 'Marokko', love those cones.

I only had one 'must have': variegated Petasites japonicus, and a GW member has very kindly found one for me. I would so love to have some Arisaemas, but I haven't figured out how to grow them in a pot yet - I've had a couple but they both declined after a couple of years - and I can't really afford to throw a lot of cash at them to figure it out :-(

There are a couple of plants that I'd been admiring for a some years and I managed to find them both yesterday: Veratrum nigrum and Imperial taro.

Tiger eyes Sumac and Endless Summer Hydrangea were my must haves. Usually, I have been putting all the nice plants in my backyard so I can sit and admire them, but the sumac went in the front yard. I had the perfect spot between a pyramid cedar and Jens Munk rose, and I'll be admiring it from the front window.

Both Tiger Eyes Sumac and Endless Summer Hydrangea are borderline hardy in zone 3, but with some winter mulch, good snowcover and a little luck, hopefully they'll survive.

By the way, Hala, I have double decker echinacea. I adore it. It needs staking, however, as the double blooms weigh quite a bit and flop the stems over, but I just put a peony ring around it early in the season.

Mine are Lonicera semp. "Major Wheeler" and Amsonia "Hubrechtii". I'm still on b/o for the first one from Horticlub, while the second has arrived and has been planted next to a Clematis on the back fence. Two newbies I can't wait to see!
P.S. Also have floppy double-deckers; this year will take your advice and stake, Thanks

I have the double decker and mixed it with hydrangea annabelle plus a helianthemum. So in this case, I don't need to stake the plant.

From my want list, I have purchased my joe pye weed - now I want a filipendula (meadow rue) and lots of it. I also just received my fall catalog from Botanus - lots to think about.
