I was outside by the Butterfly Bush trying to get a picture and when I looked down there was a small grey butterfly right next to me(of course when I tried to take it's pic the camera clicking scared it off) It was a Banded Hairstreak. They are so cute but unless your right on top of the Bush I don't think you would see them.

Jeff, my Audubon field guide says in italics, "Black more extensive on female, which often also has black borders." When I first saw this little butterfly bobbling along, close to the ground, I noticed more black than I've ever seen on a little yellow, then the black spots plus the black edging showed me it was positively NOT a little yellow.
Can you imagine how tiny the little chrysalids of this butterfly would be?

I had tons of these last summer, feeding on a mat-growing daisy-like weed in my front yard.

The host plant (one of them) is Bidens bipinnata and B. pilosa, and I have tons of it that volunteered in my yard this year. It is kind of a pretty, ferny plant, that I'm sure is probably invasive. But, I let some grow anyway. I hope I get some of those tiny, tiny little cats.

The fall form seems a bit darker than the summer.

There are lots of different types of daisy-like weeds that grow here, and my wildflower fieldguides show several different types of local bidens, but I haven't ID'd most of mine yet. If I could figure out which plant they use, I'd love to raise them, even though I'd have to get a microscope! :)
Susan, my field guides show that Mississippi is the easternmost state where they occur, except for a narrow stip along the northern Gulf Coast into Florida - they're probably a lot more common where you are than here.
