Butterfly Garden

I know I know, I already have a thread w/ my new butterflies, but it's like being a first time mom again! I released them this evening. Even with all the wind. I first tried to release the female in my front garden, by the purple cone flowers, but she kept jumping back to me. Thought maybe it was too windy out yet, and she wasn't ready. But as soon as I took her back inside she went for the slider window. So I ended up letting both out on some Queen Anne's Lace that growing up thru the part of our deck that's not finished. The male took off elsewhere right away, so the picks are of the female.

How exciting! I remember how thrilled I was to release my first butterfly - it was a gulf frit that I named Tom, because I released him on my son-in-law Tom's birthday!

Probably 200 plants are from Bob at Coenosiums. I've found his selection of miniature and dwarves to be astounding and since he's a small trip down I-5, irressitible. I've acquired about 400 plants from S&S - about 150 to my landscaping co-workers, 50 in the neighborhood common spaces and 200 amongst my different beds. I still have about 50 that I basically have no space for - mostly the large, monster types that are potted in 3-5 Gal pots awaiting a permanent home. They may turn into gifts as well for friends and family. I've spread about 20 each of Picea pungens 'The Blues' and Picea eng. 'Bush's Lace' around already, they are much too beautiful to not be planted en masses. Up to 1350 conifers and 380-something Japanese maples though at least 300-400 are still in pots. My OCD is pretty strong(understatement?), so I guess there are a lot worse things I could be addicted to. Thank you for all the compliments and suggestions, Will

Yes, Bean Counter, it was very nice of you to take the time to try to help the folks like me that live in the boonies with only dial-up to get us through the dark and lonely nights. Still, I'm thinking that maybe, speaking only for myself, the cure may be worse than the disease. I really don't think I would want to go to a text-only existence, clicking on the odd graphic now and then to see what might lurk there. Not that I don't appreciate your generous advice, but think I'll just stick with my old way of muddling through and hitting the stop button when there are too many big fat (though beautiful) photos. Besides, I just bought a new modem and I'm consistently seeing connection speeds of 46.6 Kbps. Woo hoo! That's pretty darn good for this neck of the woods. Thanks again, B. C. ThinMan

Matt, My wife agrees with yours about the lack of normality. She doesn't like snakes at all, the other herps she's okay with. I think I've got my 2 yr. old son on my side. Help please computer is slow as dial up

Click on Start - Control Panel - Programs and Features; In your list of installed programs, look to see if you have installed any toolbars ( Yahoo toolbar, MSN toolbar, Google toolbar, etc.) If you have any toolbars installed, uninstall them. Toolbars are notorious for slowing down a computer system. Unless you are purposely using the toolbar of a particular installed program, the toolbar is of no use for you, except to slow down your system.

Thanks, I'm concerned though, the little girl, I thought finally took off, evidently just crawled down the plant where I didnt see her, she's still there. We just had a cold front come thru and the temps are supposed to be in the 50's tonight. I almost brought her in, but they live out there naturally, I didn't just throw her out in 20 degree cooler temps, she's been out there since 5-6pm. Right? Worry worry worry....

She'll be fine. Butterflies can withstand low temps much better than we think. If she moved to the ground, it is much warmer down there anyway.

Thanks Susan, they're both still out the actually, the male just found a spot he blends into really well. They're in a protected area, and there's lots of clovers and other weeds around if they need to eat. The sun just doesn't want to stay out today though. I'm sure they'll be fine, they survive when they eclose outside.
