When is it safe to move 'em out?

The nighttime temps are looking good after today they are all above 40. Is it ok to put the brugs out now and do I need to move them in and out a few days to harden them off?

pagrdnr, if it's above 40 for a week solid then I would say it's safe to set them out. We usually put them close to the house but with this strange weather it's a toss up??

I agree with Karma..you had better watch the weather closely. Freaky weather this year. Do you have an enclosed unheated porch? Thats how I adjusted mine to the temp change. Left them there for a week..then moved them to an area outside that got a lil dappled sun for a week, and gradually moved them further and further out where they would get more and more sun. Be careful they don't sunburn.
YAY!!! You must be so excited to finally be getting them outside!! I'm excited for you! Good luck!! I dont think I could have waited this long to get mine outside, lol.

The reason they are tall like that is not because they are happy. They are hurting for more light and the elongated stem is them putting all their energy towards trying to get closer to whatever light source is nearby. It looks as though nearly all your seedlings are expressing this. Those leaves at the top are the seed leaves, cotyledons, which supply nutrients to the plant until it's true leaves grow and start photosynthesizing. They should be very near the soil line, not way up in the air like that. I am going to guess that you are using window light, which is very commonly done and just as frequently results in poor plant performance. Windows simply do not give enough light for growing seedlings. I do not grow flowers, so I can't be certain on this, but with most vegetables you can bury that long stem right up to those seed leaves in a deeper container and then give them more light. Lots more. Don't feel bad though, or get discouraged. This happens to a lot (I would guess most) who have ever first started gardening or growing from seed. If my old computer worked, I think I have some pictures of my first seeds started indoors, and they probably look worse then yours!

Roberto, It just means we have a significantly shorter growing period for adeniums--they actually tolerate low temperatures if they are eased into it. This last autumn, for instance, I did not bring my adult plants into the shelter until temperatures were going consistently down to about 10C at night and they did alright. However, I did put one in the garage and another one I left out a little longer (it was being treated for mealy bugs) while the rest went into the house. The garage plant was actually crunchy when I checked it in January lol (ice crystals in the trunk) and the other one died slowly when I brought it indoors as temperatures went down to just above freezing at night. For seedlings, I think the best rule of thumb is this: when outdoor temperatures at night go below your lowest indoor temperature, bring them indoors. In my case, that convergence is at around 16C. From what I have learned so far in this forum, I have not seen an upper limit to the temperature that adeniums will tolerate as long as it is watered well. Short growth periods, I am betting, probably also means less opportunity to bloom. But that matters less to me so my plants do not get any sort of bloom-boosting intervention at all. 110F. Yikes. Too early to move em outside???

If you can move them easily... start taking them out during the day. Starting with cloudy days above 60. Bring them in at night. Avoid windy days at first. I live in Michigan, Yes... Surprised a few there. My Plumi's are beautiful. 3 Trees just over 5 feet. I can't bring them in or out easily anymore. I start looking to put them out in late April. As Long as the days are warm and the temps don't stay more than 3 days in the 40's at night. Here's a link to my little world during the summer, and of course ugly winter. Did you change the locks out when moving into new home?

I rekeyed all the locks at work, changing a few out so that all the keyways were the same, Schlage SC-1. The hard part was figuring out just how master keying works, there being masters, grand masters, janitors, restricted janitors, departments, sub departments, common, and guest keys. Those are my names, not official jargon names. Once that was done, I had a scheme that worked, so I did our house too. We have master keys (the 'rents), common keys (the younger people we were stuck with for eighteen years), and neighbor keys (can't get into the bedrooms or storage closets of the above key holders). Then my wife said to me something like "I wish MY work was that easy..." So I did that too. Except for one high security lock at the first job, and an odd gate key at my wife's job, one key opened all the locks at three different locations. Pure luck! We just couldn't tell anyone... PS: all our padlocks are high quality brass rekeyable ones (old habit from a hard learned lesson), so they were included in all that, so that's four locations if you include the rental storage site. One master key (on a very small key ring).

My big overwintered ones have been out & planted for a few days. I did drag them in & out a few times (through the house & broke a few branches). The little ones were out almost every day for a few minutes until they hardened off & then they stayed on my patio table under an umbrella. The seedlings were the last to go out & they have stayed out for about the last week or so. I watch Weatherbug & the Weather Channel & compare. I thought I was going to have to bring them in again Thur night when it was 39. I only had 15 big ones to wrestle & about 45 rooted cuttings + a lot of trays of veg's & flowers. Now I have over 100 seedlings sitting on my front steps reminding me that they would really like to be planted. If they get much bigger, they will trip me & MAKE me plant them.
