How long should I give them

I still have brugs that haven't sprouted yet. The bases of the stems are alive and they have huge roots that are alive and healthy looking as well. These are all old brugs in at least 25" pots. Some have sent out new growth several inches from the main stem but others have done nothing. I can't remember this ever happening. Is there something I can do to coax it to send out new growth? Should I repot them and trim the roots? This is weird. There's thick roots at the base that are green underneath and the rest of the roots under the soil are plump and white.

I have no idea why they are doing this but I say what the heck, if the roots look good you might as well give them a chance. If they are ugly looking, just put them in an out of sight place and check on them periodically to see if they sprout. Have you tried Superthrive or fertilizing?

Just keep them watered & keep an eye on them, it's early in the season yet.

I agree with the above, for example, if you have a Persian Yellow - throw it out immediately. It has NO RESISTANCE to BS, AND IT NEVER WILL!!! It will also infect your entire rose garden. On the other hand, I find my Fair Bianca to be wonderfully disease resistant. You must use a heavy coat of organic mulch, like shredded Christmas trees or something all around your roses!!! Rain falls on bare soil and splashes up dirt onto the leaves, infecting them with BS spores. However, with mulch, the rain will not splash up. Also, bacteria live in the mulch, and EAT the fungal spores. You do not need to wait 3 years, put down a LOT of mulch now, and you will be rewarded. Also, this means you should NOT apply any strong chemical nitrogen fertilizer - this promotes too lush of a growth, and you will get problems with powdery mildew. If you fertilize with mulch + blood meal, your roses will be extremely disease resistant. In order to combat aphids, you MUST have a good patch of totally overgrown and naturalized weedy area - this is an ecosystem which will give a place for predatory insects to live, hide, and flourish. I regularly find spiders on my roses THAT HAVE MODIFIED THEIR COLOR!!! - on a white rose, I find a white spider, in the bloom, waiting to eat a pest - on a pink rose I find a pink spider - this is actually true, but you need a wild patch where the spider can go back to, if there are not enough bugs on your roses to eat, and also to propagate and make more spiders, etc. I hope this helps. Some I don't even expect to sprout, will cross that bridge when I get to it. Read here that columbines take a long time also one said that on the packet of adenophora which failed 2 winters ago, bought fresh seeds and am trying again. The rest at some point I'll pitch, just sowed them to get rid of part of my seed stash. The only thing is that if I keep them watered until August and they finally sprout, will it be too late to plant them out? Will cross that bridge if and when I get to it. My inclination were that to happen since I don't have a cold frame and since I don't think they'd overwinter in the sunroom unlike others, I may cut the bottom out of the jug and plunge it in the ground, or not cut the bottom out, and hope for the best. Then if they come back in the spring, once they're sturdy, carefully tease what's left of the jug out. Sound like a plan?

It all depends on how warm the soil was when you planted, how deep you planted & your weather. Also some dahlias take longer to wake up than others. You can do a little poking around & see if there's anything growing under there but be careful you don't break off any starts. Walt (aka- the husband) usually gives them a couple of weeks & if nothing shows he'll carefully dig them up & have a look- if there's shoots replant quickly & pretend you didn't really disturb them! If when you plant you just cover the tuber with soil it's easier for the shoot to get through the soil- then you fill in the hole as it grows.

Give them the chance to push new growth from the roots. That takes longer than a plant just pushing a few new leaves. I can't tell you how long that may take. But if you really liked these plants, I'd be patient and see if they might recover. FataMorgana

Karyn: Its probably the crazy weather.. hopefully when the temperature stabalizes, they'll come on out.

It's really strange. I used the same "wake up" formula on them as the rest of my plants. It includes ST, B1, epsom salts, etc. This is just really odd. Maybe the cold temps have delayed growth but I wonder why it's just those few? I've had those particular plants for a number of years. They were some of my first brugs.

I wouldnt give up if you still see green. Thats my rule of thumb.

Karyn, I know I am still very new at brugs..but it takes me a long time to throw in the towel on a plant, lol. I say give them more time. Maybe if you plant them in the ground they will hop to. My one Suzie Q that Annette had sent me (Thank you Dweeby!!) did nothing all winter, every once in awhile it would put out a tiny leaf, then it would shrivel and be gone. Was basically a stick in the dirt all winter. As soon as I put her in the ground, she woke up and is doing amazingly well.

Hi Karyn, I have been growing brug for many years now and have seen the same thing at times. As long as there is plump white roots there is a good chance they will come on along, although more slowly than the actively growing brugs, especially at first. Just don't keep them too wet.

I have to overwinter my brugs in an upstairs bedroom and because of the house being very warm and very dry in the winter I have a problem with dessication. I have had brugs that seemed to be completely dead, but come back to life after getting outside and having enough moisture.

It won't hurt to give them diluted fertilizer every now and then while you are waiting for them to start growing.

I agree with David. I left a couple out a few years ago as I thought they were goners well to my surprise they grew the next season after being outside. Heck if they don't do the right thing they get left out in the cold here! I have a full circle of them and keep watering on a weekly bases. I'll probably check them out once the world slows down some??
