These plants are very difficult to kill, even when you want to.
One thing you may consider: the main branches that come out and lengthen are amenable to training if you desire to do so. You can create twisty trunks or twine them together, or do just about anything with them for an aesthetic effect. In a barrel planting, you may want to train yours as a "standard", which means a single trunk (or several twining branches making a single trunk) with the foliage and flowers as a clump on top. This style is very pretty when done right.
Wisterias do need pruning at least twice a year, mainly the whippy branches that grow and grow and grow. There are some good wisteria books, probably available at your local library, you might want to check for detailed pointers on pruning & training. Have fun.

As deep roots pointed out, it's hard to kill a wisteria vine. They can become invasive and really can consume a trellis and can climb everywhere without regular pruning. I had a friend who had a very large vine with a very thick trunk and vines that started to climb over the roof of his house and along the soffit.
But he got lazy and forgot to prune the plant. Still, a blue wisteria is wonderful in full bloom.
