OT: Strange succulent

Has anyone ever heard of something that looks like a cross between an epi and a prickly pear cactus? The main pad has a few short stiff spines but the growth coming from it looks like an epi with soft green spiky parts. It looks like on the edges some buds may be forming like how Christmas Cactus bloom. It might just be new leaves that are reddish color I can't tell yet. It was given to this lady as a Christmas Cactus but I know thats not what it is. Hummmm. Need to post a pic. My tadpole is a froglett now! She just has a tiny bit of tail left. I need to post some pics and maybe Daniella can identify it. I'll get them downloaded and post a pic of the plant. I got some cuttings of another kind of cactus looking thing that is tall sticks with flat sides and spines along the edges. I'll get some pics up later.

Sounds like a natural bug trap. I never noticed my own columbines have sticky sap, so I assume that another insect came along and applied their sticky spit/urine/whatever to the plant and it attracted the flies which stuck to it. The "applier" will soon revisit the plant and have a meal. Either that or you splashed your rootbeer last time you were out in the garden ;-O

This is not a succulent but a true cactus, Leuchtenbergia principis. I believe it is the only species in the genus, making the genus monotypic. They're tough little nuggets. -Ming This post was edited by mingtea on Mon, Apr 21, 14 at 10:27

OT - Strange language on release for worker damage; Do i sign?

While it would be nice if your own insurance agent - whom one would expect to be schooled in these matters - would be willing to offer his advice regarding the language in the release from the contractor's insurance company, I kind of doubt he will do so because that would be practicing law without a license. Your did exactly the right thing in emailing a request for further information and an explanation. As an attorney, I can tell you that it is not unusual for language there to be language stating that one has received money in settlement when the check has not yet been cut. In theory the signing of the release and the receipt of the settlement check are SUPPOSED to occur simultaneously - which is easy to do when one sits down with the other party to sign documents but impossible when things are done by mail. If neither side trusts the other to follow thru, then a sit-down becomes absolutely necessary. It strikes me that your contractor MUST have a local insurance agent to whom the insurance company could send the settlement check and you could then sit-down with the contractor's local agent to sign the paperwork and pick up your check. As for providing a copy of your driver's license, an alternative is to have your signature on the release documents notarized by a notary public who will verify that you are who you say you are. All banks will have a notary available. You could agree to meet up with the contractor's agent in the lobby of your bank, have your bank's notary witness your signature on the release and get your settlement check. As for the final paragraph - it is what is known as a "subrogation clause". Basically it means that if your own insurance company (company A) has already reimbursed you for the damages and your insurance company demands the contractor's insurance company (company B) pay them back, then company B can demand that you give them back the money they paid you. The contractor's insurance company should not have to pay twice for the same damage and you should not be allowed to collect twice. Their subrogation clause could probably be worded better to make it clearer that it is NOT intended to mean that the contractor could demand that you pay his extra premiums if/when the insurance company raises his rates because of your claim. You are right that the contractor is one of the "released parties" so, strictly speaking, I suppose the language COULD be stretched to mean that you would have to pay the contractor's increased premiums - although I doubt that any court would interpret it that way. Perhaps you could insist that they modify the subrogation clause to read: FURTHER, I agree to reimburse and indemnify all released parties of any amounts which any insurance carriers, government entities, hospitals or other persons or organizations THAT ARE NOT RELEASED PARTIES may recover from them in reimbursement for amounts paid to me or on my behalf as a result of this accident by way of CONTRIBUTION, SUBROGATION, INDEMNITY or OTHERWISE. Be sure to insist that the inserted clause say "that are not released parties" rather then "which are not released parties." (The reason has to do with the restrictive versus non-restrictive nature of clauses beginning with "that" versus "which." Alternatively, perhaps you could insist that they add a sentence after the subrogation clause saying: The foregoing does not apply to any amounts which one released party may recover from another released party. BTW - I applaud you for carefully reading the documents they sent you and making sure you understood them before you signed! Hope this helps

No, she wasn't standing on it. She was laying down (lying down?) on it, which we do around here when we're watching TV. We wanted a room that can really be used. I'd like to know what it is so that it doesn't keep happening. Looks very bad--to me anyway. My eye keeps going to it, which is very annoying. I'll try vacuuming that spot and see what happens. Funny you should mention succlents. I am not taking those on as a second habit. I have quickly aquired alot of differnt ones. Does anyone know a good book for me to learn about them?

Ok here is the first pics anyone know what these flowers are? Poppies? The little tube shaped ones are the same as the bush in the next pic don't know what that is either. Polly still had her tail in this pic. Pond frog in the last pic what is the green stuff? I thought it was parrot feather but its not.

Here are the succulent pics and the spiney cuttings and polly with just a tiny tail. The last one is my funny plant in the clock vine family. Glad it lived through the winter.

Found out what the green stuff in the pond is. Hornwort or coontail. It multiplies faster than rabbits,lol. Got some parrot feather to replace it.

F4F~ I have the same cactus as in your first pic and mine is 3' tall but I have noid for it and as for your 3rd pic that is what is called an african milk tree, just google it and you will find everything about it, mine is 5' tall.Love your little froggie too...............

Froggie is almost grown. The unknown is odd looking. I have no idea. The AMT will get huge and the last one looks like it might be Thunbergia grandiflora. I have a few thunbergias and that's my favorite. There was one at the Palm Beach Zoo that completely covered a huge stone wall. It was in full bloom, there must have been a couple thousand flowers.

I swear, if I knew plants and names...the first thought I had what the 1st 2 flowers look like is Annemones (sp) lol but then the second one looks like a Hellbores (again SP) I can say more as the years go by roflmao

Could the first pictures be ranunculus, and the 2nd set, 3rd pix be cuttings of the candelabra cactus? The latter cuttings look similar to my candelabra.

Hmmm, I planted ranuculus and anemones and peonies in that spot but I have no ideas which it is, lol. It pretty though. The foliage looks the same on the blue one as the pink and white one. As to the cacus I'll look up candelabra. I have never seen it other than the cuttings so I don't know what the plant will look like. Rigo can you post a pic of your grown plant? Does it flower? I hope the thunbergia is grandiflora that would be great. I got it in the season last year and only got a few blooms before it went dormant. My neighbor said it was hardy for him so I planted it outside and hoped for the best. My philodendron is coming back I planted in the front bed too. Miss B Havin is having her first bloom. I just got back from a party but I'll see if I can go out and get pic. These glasses I just got or the beer is making typing kind of difficult. I keep having to go back and correct myself, lol. Rigo the 3rd one you mean the cactus cuttings or the tube shaped flower shrub? Those flowers were kind of past their prime. They were dark purple before they started drying out. I wonder if they only bloom on old wood. Only one stem bloomed and all the new green wood doesn't look like it has any blooms setting. It was a cutting I took from somewhere last year.

He is a good frog as I have seen him eating bugs. I like him for that, lol. The firebelly toads we got named Wilburt and Dianne are funny. Dianne is a pig and eats all the crickets. Wilburt only eats every few days and Pollywog now a frog hasn't eaten any yet. While she thinks about it one of the others beats her to it. Dang Dianne ate 4 today. She is a bottomless pig, lol. They are easy to keep and much for entertaining that regular frogs. I have to do part water changes every couple days to keep their toxins from affecting the other tadpoles and Pollyfrog. Who is not a wog anymore, lol. Ok time for bed. I think I got the cactus Id's the first one is a brazilean prickly pear and the second is Euphorbia trigona. Any better ideas let me know the first one has sharp spines on the lower pad but the new growoth is soft spines like fake leaves. I'll pot up te cuttings in catcus mis tomorrow. Seems the safest medium until I am sure.

Kristy, this is what my candelabra looks like. I don't know why I have it, because I don't even like cactus, LOL! Think I got a cutting at one of my gardening group's gathering. I stuck it in this pot and it has been there ever since. Rats, the pix is sidewards!
