'Yuletide' Camellia root depth

Hi, I'm trying to provide my wife with the gift she asked for but I need some advice perhaps you can help. She would like a "yuletide" Camellia planted between two specific windows of our house. There are a couple of questions I need to inquire about.

How deep will the roots go? There is a propane supply line running directly under this spot and my wife would like to "hide" the regulator that is against the house. I still haven't dug down to see just how deep it is, I think it is less than 12 inches. Will the roots overpower the line? Will the line present adverse conditions for the plant? Will the plant eventually suffer as it grows bigger?

2. How well will the "yuletide" do in a shady area?
How close is too close to the house? I'd like the plant to get to about 10 feet tall and I think planting 5 feet from the house would have it end up almost touching the house.
What can you tell me about the required soil conditions as well as the necessary maintenance of the "yuletide"?
Where can I find this plant in NC and know that I'm buying from a repretable source?

Hello, Doug. Here are some comments about your questions.

1. Most camellia roots are shallow but some may grow deep as time passes. If you plan to have a camellia there for a few years only (10-20) then I would not worry. Camellias grow ever so slowly that you may have to wait decades for the plant roots to pose a serious problem. Some of mine add about an inch a year but others can grow more. By the way, if properly cared for, camellias can grow hundreds of years; click here for some awesome examples.

2. Depends on your definition. Dense shade will affect the bloomage somewhat. However, you can plant a camellia under another tree, for example, and the indirect lighting will compensate for lack of direct sun. But if you plant it in really dense shade conditions then the plant may grow fine but produce few blooms. After all, some sun is needed to develop the flower buds.

3. The cement from the foundation leeches lime and that causes the soil near the foundation to become alkaline. Camellias will tolerate that up to a point so the further away from the foundation, the better. Most of us suggest planting camellias about 4' away. If your house is old, the foundation will still leech some lime but not as much as a new foundation would.

4. Camellias need soil that is acidic (pH between 5.5 and 6.8) and well draining. But as I said, they tolerate alkaline soils up to a point. My soils are definitely alkaline in Texas but I apply ammendments to lower the alkalinity in Spring of every year.

More important is to maintain the soil moist -not wet- as often as you can. Add 3-4" of any type of acidic mulch up to or past the drip line. You can fertilize in March/May/July with cottonseed meal or a general purpose slow-release fertilizer (NPK Ratio of 10-10-10 is fine).

5. Yuletide is a very common camellia. But camellias are probably not found in large numbers in stores until the weather gets cold. What is out there now may have been shipped last winter. Provided they were ordered by the nurseries, Yuletides can be found in local nurseries as well as Home Depot and Lowes so check around when the shipments come in. You could also order online too and even visit Camellia Forest Nursery in Chapel Hill, NC.

Yes,I like the look of the landscaping you've already got closer to the house, but I love the look of a tree surrounded by camellias- it's a classic look, IMO, and breaks up that endless-sea-of-grass look that's easy to mow, but not so visually stimulating... A Maple is great since it will give the camellias some shade in the summers, and provide just a little of that Asian-garden look without looking out of place in an American garden. One nice thing about this idea is that it can be easily expanded so that you can add another tree, some more camellias, an interesting shrub or two that you like the looks of... And once you've got some shade from the tree/ shrubs, you might add some hostas or other shade-tolerant plants that appeal to you and are suitable for your climate. I'm guessing from your tagline that you're in Alabama? Look in some older neighborhoods near you to see how people have used landscape islands with trees, shrubs and mulch- probably pine straw and pine bark... There are a lot of variations on the theme, so use whichever ideas appeal to you. I know your yard will look great once those shrubs and tree mature a bit... Good luck, Virginia

Dump it out, shake loose soil off, put it back and refill with fresh dirt. If there are outer roots going in circles you will either have to trim those back or provide a bigger container. Pruning the roots will have a dwarfing effect on the top, bonsai get an annual root pruning for this reason. If the potting mix is not mucky yet it might be better to wait until spring as roots cut back now aren't likely to respond much at this time. Whereas spring is the time new roots are made, if you prune right before new top growth starts then new roots should come out of the cut root ends right after. This is because the opening winter stem buds send hormones to the roots telling them to get started.

I am in the San Francisco bay area, California. I've never been able to get a hold of an extension agent, but maybe I can bring some leaves to a nursery for advice. I know we have whitefly in this garden it's infested, I see them fly up when I water plants - I just hadn't seen them actually on this plant but now I wonder if the larger sturdier leaves just shelter the whiteflies from the water stream when I've sprayed. I did have aphids on some sun parasol vines in my front garden 2 years ago they were the bright orange type. First I tried releasing ladybugs - they flew away and I never saw any again. Then I used neem soap on the plants and sprayed with water every few days to remove the honeydew and blast off some bugs, eventually I got rid of them and haven't seen them since. I examined this camallia for aphids and can't see any on it unless they are blending in better with the green plant. But the spraying hasn't helped I guess I need to use the neem soap again. My neighbor doesn't use roundup she has small dogs and doesn't use chemicals in her garden.

They do want well drained soil....something that stays continually moist/wet will not be to their liking. In fact, an established camellia shrub is pretty drought tolerant, only requiring irrigation during the driest periods. If you suspect a high water table, then I would suggest planting high. Like many other ericaceous plants, they tend to have a pretty shallow root system. Planting "high" can be accomplished in a number of ways. You can simpy set the rootball on top of the soil and mound more soil up to the top of the rootball, creating a small berm. Or you can dig a quite shallow but wide planting hole, site the rotball in the planting hole so that the top several inches are above the grade/existing soil level and then backfill and mound up slightly to cover the exposed sides.
