You'll get better results if, instead of asking "Do you have x, y or z?" you ask "When will x, y, or z come in?"

They will be in the nurseries soon- within the next month- the mints have just started to re-emerge from winter hibernation here.

Thanks, I knew there must be a reason. I did not know mint hibernated. It may not in San Francisco. The hydrangeas are not in stock yet, either, but the easy part is find a one gallon hydrangea, but they tend to die on me. I like the five gallon size.Actually I did manage to raise a lace cap from a small pot and I got a mop top also in a small pot that did not die, but just about died. I should be more bold and just get the smalled potted hydrangea which is easy to find in the major catalogues.

Twenty years ago I bought several mints from OSH. It was one of my worse mistakes. I would pay double if they would take them back. This is one of the worst weeds in the garden. If you like your hands to have that minty odor when weeding, plant mint anywhere on your property and stand back. Al

Shoot, come to my yard. I just did battle with the spearmint. Fought it to a draw but took some prisoners.

I already saw mint plants coming into all my local nurseries in the south bay. As Al says, these grow like weeds. This year, I am planting some in an isolated patch overgrown with Oxalis to see if the Oxalis gives up!

Even those drug stores that put out in front summer veggies usually include mints.
Once it gets loose-its there almost forever as it finds nooks and crannys you cant pull or dont want to use poisons..so it stays surviving the occasional weed eater attack.

I was going to put the mint in containers, I hope that is not a bad thing.

Tropical, please make sure you keep a saucer under the mint container. It spreads by rhizome-like roots that will go through the bottom hole, into the soil, and come up as much as several feet away from the original pot. It also grows into pots nearby from below, which means you have to pull the other plants out of their pots to get the mint out. I have rarely met a person who was happy that they bought mint plants.

That's bad. I will have keep on top of it by cutting off any runners. I have to check weeds daily anyway. I just got some plates today at goodwill to put under large pots. They have a lot of big heavy plates for 1.95 each.

I'm in L.A. area. I have had mint plants for 40 years. Spearmint in a redwood 5-6 gallon sized container It did get out a little but brick walkway wouldn't let it go far. Apple mint is in about 2 gal pot, it is on a stand had it in the ground but it got so thick & spread out too much. Peppermint is in ground at side yard, doesn't go far as probably gets too wet. Favorite was choc. mint-wonderful tea smelled so good & now same nursery I got it from is selling something else they are calling choc. mint. Doesn't even look like it. Mine died when bro & I were replacing the sprinklers around outside & left pot where I forgot about it with everything else going on. So there must be 2 plants they call choc. mint. 1 I like has dark green leaves, looks like peppermint until you smash a leaf & it smells like good chocolate!! Excellent tea. It was a fairly slow grower in the ground, just took leaves off for tea, house on 1 side & brick planter bed so it just stayed in the corner. Wish I could get the good tea choc. mint again.

When one thinks about buying herbs in the supermarkets, you have to go to better grocery stores and I see these collections of herb in plastic containers. They cost about $5.99 each and you can tell they are all dried up and not fresh because no one buy this stuff. It's too expensive to sell. I don't why grocery stores have all this gourmet produce and it always rots and doesn't sell, so I guess they have to keep discarding it. It's such a waste. If they had 50 packages of mint, they may sell just one package and then all the rest is discarded. So, you can not get really fresh mint unless you grow it yourself.

It's about an hour drive from S.F. but there is a nice herb nursery in vacaville that has just about every mint known to man. It would make a nice day trip on a sunny weekend day.

I'm in the bay area also. If u want to order try natural gardening. They are in sonoma. U can also find herbs at farmers market. Be sure to grow in pots as they grow rampant very easily. Mine are just reemerging

Morning Sun is the place where they have a tomato tasting day, that I always miss because I don't know about in advance. I want to try and go to that this year.

Payless Nursery in San Jose has mints and probably any of the Summerwinds Nurseries will have them in stock.

I've had a mint plant in a 1 gallon pot (on concrete) for 10 years. It must be solid roots and no soil by now, yet keeps going and going, like the Energizer Bunny. If it is that tough in a pot, no wonder it takes over in the ground.

I called Morning Sun herb farm and they have a lot of mint in stock right now. I did not ask what kinds, but they might have chocolate mint. They do mail order, but I think there is a problem with shipping thing out of the state of CA. I will probably be heading up there soon, so I will just stop by. With so many choices it's hard to decide which mints to buy. It will love San Francisco weather, cool and foggy all year. I just have to make sure it never gets into the ground.

I like Summer Winds Nursery also, but it breaks my heart to go there, because I think about when it was Woolworth Nursery and how much I miss Woolworth stores in general and all my happy times spend there as a child. Woolworth Nursery was fantastic. The plants were excellent and the prices were low. But, I may go there first because it's closer. They are located in the south bay area.

Today, both OSH and Summerwinds had mint plants. so, try there first!
