Single stem or multi stems?

I try to grow brug this year. Got pink, white, and yellow baby brugs in the pots. So far no one has complained, just keep growing... Grow bigger leaves, taller, and a lot of new leave buds from the stem/cutting.

I read somewhere said that single stem is prefered form. I really don't care how many stems it has as long as it can bloom sooner since I am in the area where has shorter summer/fall. I am wondering whether the single stem form will make the them bloom sooner ? or the multi-stem will make the them bloom sooner? or no differences? Welcome suggestions.

HI and welcome. Some brugs like to grow bushy, and you can tell which ones just by looking at them. If you leave them to grow bushy, you'll probably get tons more blooms. Some folks like to remove all the side branches except the top leader. This creates a tree form. I think it's just one's personal preference. I've tried both. I'm not sure if pruning them will make them bloom sooner. I would just leave them alone, since flowers appear on the growing tips of most brugs. Enjoy!

Hi Mike, Any size is fine (cuttings or plants...)One or two of the Celadines would be great. My seedlings are all at least 2" tall with nice, thick stems and second set of 'true' leaves. They were all started from seed only a month ago (March 23rd) hydroponically, using only organic fertilizer. Depends alot on the structure & wood-durability. Many white-type oaks make reasonably good forks in the multi-trunk. Black-type oaks not so good, but I see those that eventually lose one of the trunks & callous-over pretty well. Other black oaks lose a trunk and rot begins in the base. Same general issues for pretty much any multi-trunked tree. I see multi-trunked white pines (that were prb'ly "weeviled" at an early age) that formed reasonable forks & seem fine -- once saw an enormous, ancient white pine w/such multi-trunking.

I haven't noticed multi-stemmed aspens . The plants in the garden center in the spring are typically quite mature. As the season progresses and the older plants are sold out, growers then begin shipping new, younger crops, thus you see less mature plants. All are produced from cuttings, not divided a with a perennial i.e. hosta or daylily. I am guessing the last plants you described with 3/4" stems are not Hydrangea macrophylla but more likely Hydrangea paniculata which have larger stems as you described.
