The 'other' vine is Pandorea jasminoides 'Rosea' whose common name is Pink Bower Vine. It hails from Australia and will grow in Sunset Zones 16 - 24 (the Phoenix valley is in Zone 13). I've seen it for sale at many of the home improvement stores and sometimes mislabeled Pink Trumpet Vine. Just check the botanical name to be sure you get the right one. welcome to NC! ok- as far as the honeysuckles the one you want to avoid is the japanese one, lonicera japonica. you can plant coral honeysuckle which is vigorous, but not invasive, and unfortunately not fragrant. it's lonicera sempervirens. it's a gorgeous coral red with yellowy throats that the hummers adore, and blooms heavily in spring then on & off all summer through fall. there are some yellow flowered cultivars of it. there are some other honeysuckles and i'm sorry i can't recall the names, that look a bit more like the jap kind, but are flushed with pink and gold and behave well and have fragrance that the hummers enjoy. campsis radicans, trumpet vine-aka cow itch-aka trumpet creeper is a native vine, but it is pretty invasive. i have it on my prop and let it grow up into one tree for the hummers, but keep the rest mowed off at the ground. it's like maypop- it comes up far and wide form the original from underground runners. cross vine- bignonia capreolata, is semi-well behaved. it's a native, too- and it's everywhere for me, and hard to eradicate where you don't want. it likes to climb high and flower- it flowers at about 40-60' in my trees. i think the improved versions like tangerine may flower more profusely for you than the straight species. hummers love both cross and trumpet vine, and i have both growing up big trees and flowering very successfully. they also like carolina jessamine, another native that can get a bit unruly. it's yellow, unlike the others, and so it could offer some contrast. another thing you may not have considered for hummers, is coral bells, heuchera species (look for the ones with red or pink bells- so many now have smaller dingy white flowers). and most of the salvias are magnets, too, even the blue ones like guaranitica. they like annuals like petunias, morning glories and million bells, too. more uncommon vines like manettia and mina lobata tickle them for later in the year. all that said, i'd be cautious about planning to plant too much this year though, with the drought. the likelihood of it continuing is too great, and water too scare to water much. if you are going to plant, do it soon while the earth is still moist and the things can get well established before it gets too dry. even with that, there's a good chance you'll lose much of what you plant now. i think i'd be content to get 2 or 3 feeders and hang those to draw in the hummers this year. best of luck with your gardens!

I have trumpet vines growing on an old silo here. No spreading problems but that is because of where the vines are located, which is my point: Plant locations need to be thought out carefully ahead of time to avoid the problems you mentioned. Plant varieties need to be researched to learn of the pros and cons, and what if any control methods need to be used, or whether it is even wise to be planting a certain variety at all. I never let any vine grow on the house - I consider that building to be sacrosanct because it is my safe place from the elements, it is a big investment, and it needs to be properly maintained and protected from abuse. Why have something growing on it that will cause maintenance issues and potential expensive repairs in the future? A house needs to "breathe" and having a wall of foliage and vines is certain to cause moisture-induced maintenance problems at the very least. Other problems include attraction of rodents and insect pests, and damage from the vine stems themselves. IMO no vines should be growing on or near a house, ever. Anyhoo, trumpet vines spread by three methods: 1.) Spreads by seeds, but young, tender seedlings are easy to pull out when weeding. Miss a couple of seedlings, let them grow one full season, and the battle begins. 2.) Spreads by self-layering, so plant maintenance is critical regarding pruning of any low or drooping branches before they take root. Neglect to pay attention, forget to prune, and the battle begins. 3.) Spreads by roots, which is by far the biggest issue. This can be avoided by taking a large pot or container, cutting off the bottom or at least drilling holes for drainage, then sinking the pot in the ground (leaving an inch or so exposed above ground level), filling with soil, and planting the trumpet vine inside the pot. Neglect to use any root barrier method and the plant is guaranteed to spread, and the battle is on as soon as you place the plant in the ground. The bottom line is that when diligent maintenance and control methods are followed continuously, you will never have a problem with this plant getting out of control. Blow this off and you will have an invasive mess on your hands quicker than you would ever expect, and you will then be fighting it for years. So the real question you must ask is "Is this plant that important to me that I am willing to give it the continuous attention and policing that it will need for as long as it is growing here?" If the answer is yes, then plant it and enjoy it. If the answer is no, there are many other wonderful plants that are excellent hummingbird attractors that require much less maintenance. BTW the trumpet vine is in a unique group of plants that, while native to North America, are considered to have invasive qualities even in its own habitat range. The common violet is another.

I have an Angel Trumpoet vine. I say that because the plant never exceeds the height of 2 feet, yet spreads out as long as 4 to 5 foot branches along my flower bed. The flowers are white and only bloom at night. They make a large beautiful ground cover for a large flower bed or the side of the house. They are poisoness but none of my animals are interested. the trumpet vine is beautiful in bloom and attracts hummingbirds all year long. I've never heard of anyone or any animal being poisoned by one. Thank you.
