Possible Reasons Why a Brug Won't Bloom

Hi all,

My Brug that I babied through the winter has been putting out buds since February. Lots and lots of buds. But none have come to bloom. The buds just fall off and start all over again. Is this common with young Brugs? What are some possible reasons why it won't bloom? I give it Bloom Boost and have it in a nice sunny locale. Any tips for me? I am new to Brugs and can't figure it out.

thats a beaut! just give it a bit more time, it looks like it is getting accustomed to your current weather and growing nicely... I think it just didnt like it when, I assume you had it inside.

Hornetwife. have you ever grown your brugs in the ground. my brugs do so much better in the ground. you have a beautiful brug. mine were doing the same thing in the pot. now they are in th ground they don't do that. I will be posting pix as soon as it quits raining. Elizabeth

BUT (yes it's a big one, watch out, ha), you CAN grow them and get them to bloom further north with some winter protection for the buds, since they're proving to be root-hardy ie they're still alive and growing from the roots. What you need to do is protect the buds, which grow at the tips of the stems. Make a little circle around the plant using stakes or sticks, add chicken wire or burlap to form a cage, stuff the cage with leaves. Oak leaves supposedly don't pack down as much as others. Keep an extra bag of leaves in the garage (so they don't freeze), as you'll need to add more leaves if they do pack down and expose the buds. Remove the entire thing when the last frost date is past. You should see new growth, and swollen buds on the tips of the branches. Sounds like work, esp. as the shrubs get bigger. Which is why they came up all the newer paniculatas that bloom on both "new" and old wood. In other words, they develop new buds after growth resumes in spring, as well as sometimes keeping their buds from the past year. HTH!

When she bought it the flower was already formed in the rhizome. That was the 1st year bloom. If it is a tall bearded, zone 4 is not as friendly a climate as it is to dwarf beardeds. The growing season is short so good soil, good drainage, & full sun are mandatory. Has she planted it with the top of the rhizome exposed? Have any babies been produced? If so there's a chance another year of healthly growth will produce a flower in the rhizome. Tell her to not trim off green leaves when they begin to flop in summer. The last resort is to find TB's that have proved they can take zone 4 winters. Does she know its name or who hybridized it?

I hear you all. Don't know what these crazy plants like. I have 4. 2 new ones doing well in full sun but had buds when I bought them. One gets shade from 2pm on. Nothing blooming yet. Not even a sign of it. Died to the ground over winter. The last one gets sun from noon to sunset with a break from 2-3 pm. It looks as though it may have one bud coming. It has been in place for 3 years now. I bought it the very first year they were out. Dies to the ground every winter and has never got bigger than 12 inches in all directions. I am so disappointed and stupid enough to have invested in 2 new ones this year. What are the other continuous bloomers out there? I am new to hydrangeas It may be time to consider replacing the 3 year old.

Assuming that they are bearded irises, there could be any number of reasons. The FAQ covers them quite well. In my opinion, being crowded, not enough sun, and planted too deeply are the biggest reasons why they don't bloom. Have they ever bloomed well since they were planted? How many years have they been planted? If improperly planted in the first place (too closely together) they can soon become too crowded to bloom. To much bloom booster for such a young plant isn't good and the dropping of the buds could be for many reasons. What color or do you have a name for this one? Is it drying out to much or in the wrong environment? If it's a lighter shade of bloom then you have it in full sun that could be why it's dropping??

Thanks, Oxmyx! Elizabeth, I am about to move from TN to Corpus Christi, TX next month so maybe after getting there I can put some in the ground.
Karma, I don't know what kind I have, it was a potluck surprise from ebay. I guess it isn't helping out my cause not knowing.
How much Bloom Boost is too much for a young Brug? I give it the Bloom Boost every few waterings, but with all the rain we've had, I haven't had to water in a while.

hornetwife, you want to not use the Bloom Booster but once a week and we don't start using that one until Juneish. You will love that area of TX!

Mine won't bloom either. I found this posting while searching for a possible reason for my plant not blooming. I heard (don't know how true it is) that a brug won't bloom until the plant branches out (forms a Y). Here's a photo of mine. It has branched out, but still no blooms.

Anyone got anymore ideas? Mine is absolutely thriving now that it's in been in the ground for 4 months. I fertilize it once monthly and spray with organicide for aphids and caterpillars.

LBF it is true that a brug needs to form a "Y" before it will set buds. I think there's an exception to this rule with some varieties, but very few. Branching is not the same as making a Y. You will see unequal leaf bases where a plant has formed a Y. I have some brugs that reach 6+ feet before they will form a Y and others that will bloom while still very small. If grown from a cutting, where it was taken from on the parent plant can determine how soon it will bloom. If it was taken from above a Y it will normally bloom sooner then a cutting taken below the Y.

I had a 3 yr. old brug that was 5 ft. tall. I did everything that was supposed to, but it refused to make a Y. At the end of fall, I got mad, and cut the top 8 inches off, telling it now make a Y, or go to the compost. In a few weeks, it made a Y, so this yr. it should bloom.

Hornetwife, I live in Dyersburg. I'm trying to obtain a brug, and I've posted every place I can think of! I don't care what color, can you help me? I know you're getting ready to move, but I'm begging! I'll take seeds, cuttings, or plants!
