OT: how do you edge your flowerbeds?

Well in the 2 years I had to take the rocks, fences etc off again just so I can dig out that ugly grass that just is hard to keep away and it's runners are deep deep in the soil.

SO, while browsing Lowe's. I discovered that there is such a thing as a gas powered Edger....WOW. Life could be SO SO easy. Cause the weed eater sure did not keep the grass from growing in the flowerbeds.

Now I just need to figure out if that is really the best way to go? Which brand? What do I have to look out for?

I know I LOVE the tiller and got it just because I ask here first!

I edge my flower beds with the neighbors yards on either side, a grass alley in back (neighbor mows it) & the main road in front. LOL No grass left except for a few pieces I haven't got yet. The neighbors mow up to the mulch & it is planted so thick there usually aren't too many weeds. All the rest of it is flowers with stepping stones in between. There are raised veg beds & used brick path & patio in back. Most of the yard is edged with more bricks to make it easy to pull what little grass manages to come up on my side. I had so many things to mow around, it was easier to not have grass at all. I hate mowing. I still have a huge pile of bricks to turn into the side paths that aren't finished yet.

You need to check how deep the edger actually cuts into the ground. Ours has a long blade but only a couple of inches actually go down into the ground and mine wouldn't be enough to stop the grass I don't think. The kind we have goes down underground and pops up on the other side of my raised beds even.

Last year was my first WSing and I got into the seed saving in a BIG way (ask my family, there were paper plates of drying flower heads all over the house!) They got to the plates by all the methods mentioned above (collected in any kind of container really, then put on plates to dry.) But it was the seperating the seed from "the rest" that took a tremendous amount of time and effort for me. Some are easy (shake in a bag,hard,heavy seeds fall to bottom) but some are very tricky. People on this forum were very helpful and chatty in the fall about seed saving - what works best for seperating certain seeds/chaf, etc. I'm sure that will happen again. I also wanted to participate in the "Round robin" big seed swaps and felt that I should make labels on the computer for the little zip lock bags I was sending so the recipients would know something about the seeds (name, ht, color, etc) That took a lot of time, both creating the labels and then placing them on the baggies. And I soon discovered that many others don't do this...more than 50% of the wonderful seeds I received just had a handwritten name on the envelope, leaving it to me to look up information. But now that I have a ton of them on my computer already and will just have to do the printing, I will do the same thing again anyway. I'd be happy to share the word label files with anyone who wants them for their seeds. The amount of seed and variety of seed I received in these swaps (I did three, sending and receiving around 100 each time)was incredible and I highly recommend that you try them if you haven't. It was like christmas morning apporaching the mailbox to see if the packages arrived, and I would sit for hours just sifting through the packages of seed, amazed by the "riches" in front of me! So for me seed saving is just the "other side of the circle" - I've been able to put out over 200 containers of seedlings this year so far with saved/swapped seed. LOVE IT! Nancy

Jen, I put most of those beds in in 1996. In Nov 2003 we bought the house next door, and I put in 4 more beds then. I want more flowerbeds and a garden, but I have to wait until Gary retires in Dec. There is a funny story behind those flowerbeds. My husband swears that Jim Potts put those beds in for me, but I did it all by myself with my tiller. I just outlined them with garden hoses to get the shape I wanted, sprayed with roundup, then tilled in tons of mulch and cow manure. Put the bricks around them, and that is how easy it was to put in flowerbeds at the coast. He was mad at me at first, but now he likes them. I want more, but promised I would wait. It has been 9 years since I put in my last flowerbed. We will build our new house where the old house is. So I only have one flowerbed the entire right side of the house, I did not take a picture of it. When the new house is built, I will have flowerbeds all around it. The back of the house is full sun, so that will be a new plumeria bed. Barbra

I do a lot of one pot dishes, meat and potatoes, stroganof, bean soup with ham, spagetti, etc., then after working to make lovely (and very high calorie food) I grind it all up in a food processor. No matter what the food, it always appears to be something gray with butter in the end (or red if it's spagetti). So I wanted lots of counter space for prep, a huge range to cook in and on, and somewhere to keep the food processor busy while grinding and cooking. Then I package it all up in 6oz packages and freeze it. This is all for DS...I don't normally cook our family meals (DH is a fabulous cook). I never envisioned myself grinding and freezing food LOL if anyone knew I'd lose my "Amatuer chef of the year" award from the mid 80's...I wonder if I could grind up a cheesecake...heh heh DH does all of the cooking when we entertain and for our family dinners. We planned the kitchen so that he could work efficiently, with a stainless counter run between the main sink and stove. That huge stove, with appropriate hood so he can stirfry, and prep space behind him to work on vegis while meat is happening on the stainless side. On the other side of the island we have a sink, and two counters. They're sort of "my" zone when we entertain, for appetizer prep, salad prep, and landing zones for dishes between courses. Our sink and DW are lined up with the main dish/silver storage, so that some day, when DS becomes useful, he can put away dishes or set the table without being in DH's way. The fridge is between the two zones so that we can both access it easily. So far it flows very well. We made our isles bigger than they were (they were about 29" wide prior) and planned appliances that don't fill the isles when open. Dish and food storage is planned based on when it's used and how, so that they're close to the functions that make sense (ie wine glasses and decanters are close to the dining room door since we tend to use a lot of them during parties). But no matter how well we planned...we couldn't increase the size of the kitchen, so after a dinner party for six...it all looks pretty much like this LOL: I was half way through cleaning up when I took those pics LOL we really do make a mess, and having lots of counters to toss it on between courses was a big deal to us.

Everyone has such pretty gardens above. As for the planning, I think it all depends on what you begin with, costs & style. I love the look of formal & modern landscaping; however, I bought a resale 8 year old home that looks somewhat traditional with an existing patio & a flat square backyard with a 6 ft privacy fence surrounding it. The patio is a curvy number with smaller interlock brick with a beige stone. It kind of sets the tone for the yard. It's not what I would have done, but it's nice enough that I can't justify replacing it. The original back fence line garden came with a few clumps of ornamental grass, a willow type shrub, a few other false spireas & a peony. In a bed that was about 3 feet deep. Already overgrown with weeds. So I spent the 1st summer cleaning that up, saved a few choice plants, planting 12 trees - front & back yards. And I started making fence line garden beds. Obviously have to plant the larger foundation plants & get them thriving first. So in 2 summers I made about 300 feet of garden around fence areas between the front and back. Planted the trees, 30ish varying shrubs, 45ish roses & quite a few perennials. Lots of edging & mulching. I also have a 6 ft fence along the front yard on one side. When we moved in there was no plants along the sides of the yards. I am very happy with the progress so far. But I want to extend more, add more, etc. Because my yard is very flat it was relatively easy & cheap to get as many beds as I have. If we had to do more hardscaping it would not be as simple. So I think a lot of someone's garden planning comes from the complexity or issues their actual property has ie. slopes, drainage, soil types, etc. Also I live in zone 5 so hardiness is a factor. I love boxwood hedging around beds, but it's easily ravished by winter winds, sun & ice damage. And I'm too lazy to winter protect that much. There are just so many variables. This is a picture of 3/4 of my back fence line last September. Started out as a 3 foot deep straight line bed. Here's another view of the back fence. There's is a small square patio tucked in the right corner. The stones for edging were used because there was a big pile of them in the corner when we moved in. So this came from an evolution plan. This is my side fence garden bed. Once the hornbeams & limelight get bigger I will widen this bed again.

Hey Lucy,

I also have an edger. Mine has an adjustable blade. I have had it for several years, I think it is a Yard Machine. I have never had any trouble out of it. If your ground is pretty flat it will work well. If you have humps it won't cut as deep in those areas. I like the look of a deep v cut made with a flat spade. More time and effort of course but it lasts a good while. If you go the manual route get a good spade, it will cost more up front but well worth the extra money.

I don't use the gas edger on flower beds, just around the driveway and walkways. My tiller has an edging blade that works ok but what seems to work best is the metal flashing looking stuff that's dug underground.

Karyn since I am building beds UP above the ground...it is to hard to put a edge stopper in evenly and low enough where it would not show.

Besides...as many flowerbeds I am creating...it would cost me a fortune rofl.

All my beds are raised. The are held together by 2 x 12 boards. Even so sometimes grass manages to creep in. I used a paint brush and roundup. . . .

Lucy it still might be worth while to put some type of underground barrier between the grass and garden especially if your lawn is Zoysia, Bermuda or any grass that sends out runners. I have a couple of elevated beds that the grass has managed to creep into. You can buy flashing by the roll super cheap. You can also check out new developments that are being built and ask if the builder has any extra. I don't buy the stuff they sell in the garden centers. It's probably the same thing but 3x the cost.

I hope this helps, I have a tool it's called a turf cutter
it looks like a half moon, with a hoe handle, it cuts the turf or grass, then you just remove it, it makes those clean lines around your flower beds, I love it, it's manual no gas

I am edging mine completely in caladiums this year :) I really should add a hardscape material but the caladiums seemed to do pretty well at marking where the line is once they fill in.

I dig a deep edge with my shovel, then periodically walk around spraying Ground Clear- it's supposed to work for a year if you apply it heavily enough- got it at Walmart for around $25.00. Saves so much time!
