New to this site.

I stumbled onto this site, a couple days ago, and my eyes are almost crossed from reading, I feel like I've found home, I lost my husband to cancer, had to sell our house, the new one I bought has a small greenhouse, I have gone succulent crazy, so many kinds,lol, caring for these plants has helped me heal, so hello to everyone, and happy growing!

Hi Loretta,

Welcome aboard here. Good for you and the greenhouse - I have a Keystone State friend who also has one and is a succulent fanatic, so you'll have lots of company.

Loretta, welcome from SA and you are lucky to start with a greenhouse, they do tend to fill quickly with lovely succulents and cacti...hope to see some of your plants soon! Ryan

Just acquired a 3.5 acre property with great sun. I am in hardiness zone 5b. I would like to start at least a 100ft by 100ft garden on it this spring. I also have a great source of compost. The land is just a field of mowed grass right now. Does anyone have some tips on how to get started or has anyone been through starting a big garden before and can offer some experienced input? My only experience is 2 years in the hydroponics lab at college. Thanks, hope this works.

I'd look into lasagna gardening. Basically, you put down layers of whatever organic matter you can get your hands on (autumn leaves shredded or not, grass clippings, compost, used coffee grounds, shredded paper, cardboard, sea weed, pine needles, finely shredded wood chips, sawdust, livestock manure and bedding, straw, etc.), keep it moist, and let weather and the natural process of decomposition do their thing. The worms and various other tiny critters will move in surprisingly quickly and work to incorporate your layers into the ground and in amongst themselves. The longer you allow it to sit, the deeper and more completely the soil will be improved. It really is amazing what can be accomplished with little to no work on your part. Check out the Soil, Compost, and Mulch Forum. You'll find more information than you ever thought possible on preparing soil for growing things. You'll also learn that the original soil preparation is the most critical stage in creating a beautiful garden or yard. You get better value in the end when you invest heavily in the beginning. Midwest Gardening is very quiet as far as a thread goes. To trade seeds try looking at Exchanges-Seed Trade or Exchanges-Plant Trade. This site used to be called Gardenweb. It nearly closed completely, but Houzz 'added it' into their site. Many people have ditched it, but many are still here. I like the Round Robin thread, too. I am in a group that does a monthly exchange (FOTESS-Friends of the earth simple swaps). So I've been able to make connections with about 20 people. More personal than a single trade. It all depends on what you want. If you put up a trading list/ideabook then people know what you're looking for and what you have to trade. My favorite swap is the Christmas Card Swap. We send Christmas cards to each other with seeds in them. Everyone puts their list up. That will be on the Round Robin soon, probably closer to Thanksgiving. Heidi
