You would not believe the number of unhappy people in my area! This is of course, a big French support base, and soccer is pretty big in this city, and the big gathering areas for the French fans are right around the corner. You could hear what was going on as they were doing the penalty kicks. They have to close several main streets down for the celebrating Italian fans in 'Little Italy' (not my neighbourhood) and the celebrating 'anyway' French fans.

And we're going out to dinner in an hour - should be a madhouse out there.

Just the opposite here, Bonnie. We have a pretty large French population (in Edmonton, the closest city), but also a large AND LOUD and VERY VERY HAPPY Italian pop.

I got a call from a friend who tells me the streets to all of "little italy" have been barricaded off, just like in 1982, and there are BBQs set up, grilling sausages and handing them, wrapped in good Italian bread, to anyone who passes by. Along with the requisite double-kiss and big hug, of course.

The cops said something in '82 when we pulled out the tables and put on music and food - something about "you can't block traffic" - but they gave up pretty quick and just helped re-route traffic. Take it from me: a thousand people, all laughing and singing and dancing, and a bunch of big men handing you good food and hearty hugs.....well, how can a cop get mad? Besides, we WERE stopping motorists. Intentionally. How could we hand them food and shout a loud, joyful "TRE A UNO!!" if they were moving?! I'm betting this year they just sort of shrugged and figured "eh, it's a happy day, call it a (several) block party."

Oh, how we needed this!

I'm an immigrant, and I support my native Italia in every World Cup. This year was especially important: we have political woes at home that are making everyday life a misery. And this year we had sworn to dedicate the championship to Scirea and honour his memory.

Italy wanted this, yes. More, Italy NEEDED this. I don't think anyone who wasn't born and raised in Italy can undersand how much national pride we invest in our soccer (called "calcio" - CAL-cho - which also means "kick"). It's not just that we have some great players; we immerse ourselves in it, we support them no matter what. And they've done us proud.

But I ask you: WHY did Zidane end his career like that?! That was a vicious, painful attack, and (for once) I can't blame the ref for red-carding him. It was painful to watch the French team getting their medals and taking them right off. I would have felt the same way: if our captain can't come out and get his, what joy is there in it for us? Ah, well. Italy plays France next week in the European Cup. We'll see what happens.

A little olive oil adheres to the spaghetti and keeps it from sticking and adds to the taste and is healthy. It does NOT quit the sauce from adhering to the spaghetti unless you use some ridiculous amount, if you use the sauce you'll have to use more and mix well are it will still stick together. When spaghetti is cooked correctly and you try to serve that many plates of it from a bowl then carry it to the kitchen, then each takes his sweet time pronging out enough for just his/her plate it will be either stuck like glue and just about cold! When mix with the sauce it's the oil in the spaghetti that tries to keep it from sticking anyway. Always mix the children spaghetti with the noodles and sauce mixed on the plate and take to the child, try it any other way and you will find out why this is the "only" way to do it, parents can help serve the children!!!! You didn't say how many children so I'm assuming a "BUNCH", 3 to 6 is a bunch, anything more is a "Mob"! Try and serve them all at on once are as near to it as possible. I mentioned an off room back porch or feeding them first, it's because it's quick to clean, could be cleaned later or the parents drinking the wine will give you a hand then it's done quickly, especially if they haven't eaten yet, (psychology) What ever you do not not let the children and adults eat at the same time, DISASTER! Once the little darlings have been fed they will tire out quickly, That movie with the kids on the floor will save your life/sanity. The adults can march by the stove and help them selves to spaghetti/sauce and mix on their own with out any sticking problems (if done quickly). No fuss no muss, actually there always is so, just grin and bear it! That's basically it, I gained this "wisdom" from being raised with 6 brothers and sisters, plus on Sundays (every Sunday) there was always another 4 to 10 relatives or more not counting kids), loads of fun if done correctly, nightmare if not. You ask it I've seen it!!!!!!!!! Hints: Have a couple of rolls of paper towels handy where the kits are eating along with a couple damp dish towels. If you plan on desert, make it simple, small bowl of ice cream with some chocolate syrup (serve it at the table for the kids), not on the floor watching TV. Don't set condiments on table with kids such as cheese or whatever, have it on the spaghetti when served! Make sure the children are properly adorned, bibs on the young ones. This is the one area I am extremely familiar with, I have made it sound like a nightmare from the start but it isn't! I would just like you to be well prepared for some thing unusual to happen, not that it always does, but the possibilities are fairly large that it will. Have your camera ready or be sorry later. It's a trip but one that no family should be without. However if you are prepared you'll have a BLAST, be prepared! Please don't forget to just chill out when thing don't go according to plan, hell they never do , so just have FUN!

I have one recipe I use that makes a lot and contains meatballs. But when I want to make a smaller amount (maybe about 4 servings), I make the following (very basic) sauce: saute chopped onion (maybe 1/2 cup) and 3 or 4 minced gloves of garlic in 2 Tablespoons of butter. As you saute this add a teaspoon each (I use generous teaspoons and don't measure) of dried oregano, dried rosemary, and dried thyme. Sprinkle salt and pepper in as desired. Let this cook until the onions are soft and the herbs are very fragrant. Add 16oz canned crushed tomatoes. I use RedPack or Cento, which I think are thicker than some other brands. Bring this to a simmer and let it simmer on low covered for a while...I'd say at least 10 or 15 minutes. You can eat it over pasta this way, which is delicious on its own, or add cooked sausage and simmer a little longer to let the meat further flavor the sauce. Another thing you can do with the basic meatless tomato sauce involves alcohol: After the tomato, onion, garlic, herb mixture simmers for about 5 minutes, add 1/2 cup of Absolut Pepper Vodka which you've already brought to a boil in a separate pot with a 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper. Let the sauce simmer maybe 10 minutes after adding the boiling vodka/pepper. Then add 3/4 cup half & half and 1/2 cup freshly grated parmesan cheese. Stir well and let simmer a little bit. I like to eat this with pasta that's been boiled with fresh spinach. Sprinkle more parm on top. This is a decadent treat. I love spicey food, and this sauce fits the bill. But even just the basic butter, onion, garlic, herb, tomato mixture is heavenly on its own. The rosemary really gives it a fantastic flavor. Hope this was all clear. - mando

Here's mine (from my Sicilian grandmother Vittoria): VITTORIA'S SPAGHETTI SAUCE Serves 12 For 2 pounds spaghetti 4 Tbs olive oil 3 large mild Italian sausage links 2 medium yellow onion, chopped 30 ounces tomato, peeled and diced 30 ounces tomato sauce 24 ounces tomato paste 4 cloves garlic 1 stalk celery, cut in half 1 whole bay leaf 3 sprigs parsley, Italian flat leaf 3 sprigs oregano 1 cup Chianti 2 teaspoons sugar Â¼ cup basil, fresh, chopped 1 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes fresh ground black pepper salt -- to taste Directions Heat olive oil in bottom of large stock pot on medium-high. Brown sausage and remove with slotted spoon. The sausage adds a very special flavor to the sauce, whether you serve it with the sausgae ("meat") or not. Put in onion and sautÃ© until soft. Add tomato (with juices), tomato sauce, tomato paste and a bouquet garni (enclosed within the halves of the celery stalk) of garlic, parsley, oregano and the bay leaf. Bring to a boil, immediately reduce heat and simmer for 2 hours on low. Keep a lid on the pot but keep it slightly askew. Stir occasionally to make sure it doesn't stick or burn to the bottom of the pot. Return sausage to pot (optional but it does add flavor), add Chianti, pepper flakes, sugar, basil, pepper and salt. That was definatly a wierd thing for Zidane - there was no reason for it! His teammates must be royally pissed at him since they might very well have won if he was still in the game.

It was definitely a madhouse outside. I can't imagine what it must have been like up in 'Little Italy'. They must have closed off everything. The cops know better now than to try to keep people out of the streets - they close them down when the game starts.

DH watched the Brazil-France game last weekend while he was in Brazil. He said that was something to see - basically the whole city of Sao Paulo (some 18 million!) shut down so they could watch it. We're kind of used to the soccer crazies here, and Montreal is probably the biggest soccer city in the US or Canada, but he says that was something.

I do hope they stop driving around and honking before bedtime though :-)

Do you really think ZZ's absence was a make-or-break thing? I'm not sure. He is(or was...I believe he's retiring now) an amazing player, but it's a TEAM sport and I don't think we can base the whole game on any one player.

Sadly, the head-butt is the defining moment of the 2006 World Cup. Check out any sports site and you'll find it's the Main Event. Not that I think ZZ didn't deserve the call: it was clearly deliberate and it was a cardable offense.

But let's face it: the WC is as much about theatrics as anything else.

I'm not saying a hard head-butt to the chest doesn't hurt - and probably a LOT - but Materazzi rolling around like a shot hog, wailing in agony....oh come ON now! As much as I love my country and "my" team, I would have been quite happy to see Matt. sent off with at least a yellow card. That was just plain childish. "Oh, mom, he pushed me and I fell down and HURRRRRT myself!" Marco, will you please grow UP!

This is what you get in a game that does not show instant replays to the fans. I've always seen this as a mixed blessing. Yes, we don't get the endless prattling that goes on in hockey and football, and it keeps the game "current", but there aren't enough pairs of official eyes on the field. It wasn't until Buffon directed the ref's attention to the "floored" Materazzi that anything was done. And even THEN it took several assistant refs, plus inspection of the recorded play, before he did anything.

I can't blame France for being stunned and angry at this. In their view, ZZ didn't do anything. The game was stopped, the refs conferred, and OUT he went. What the heck?!!

No, there are no excuses for either of them. Matterazzi was probably being a mouthy jerk. ZZ lost it. Matt made the best of it. Neither one gets my vote for Sportsman Of The Year. The real tragedy is the way ZZ ended up OFF the field for good, a stupid final move in a brilliant career.

And, to the man's credit, he knows how dumb it was. If I've read correctly, he WAS given the option of coming out and getting his silver medal with his teammates, but he declined. Imagine how horrible he must have felt.

(And that's another thing: this whole red-card bit. OFF FOREVER! In hockey - what little I see of it - it's "off for a while, sorry, your team has gotta play without you, but you can come back in a bit." But that's another rant.)

Given a bit of time, I think ZZ will best be remembered for his amazing skill: he quite rightly received the Player Of The Year award. But I gotta tell you.....this may well be the last WC I'll ever get involved with. Generally speaking, the game degenerates into a playground brawl far too often. The '82 win was 3 to 1 in regular play, and that was a truly honourable and magnificent game. This year's....

You can't compare the two. Bravi, Azzurri, I'm very happy for the win. Now, in the coming years, can we please grow UP?

Sigh.
