Just checking in--been MIA!

I have not been very active in the past months due to being very discouraged with gardening and stress and here lately due to working 10-11 hrs a day!!! I finally got a job and I really like it. After a year of being unemployed I am finally back working for another Sign Company! I moved twice since April 2008 and starting over with landscaping my new place. Due to the unexpected move in Dec/Jan I was unprepared for overwintering my plants! I did put together 2 makeshift greenhouses and had over 100 sheets and frost blankets to try to protect them, but temps got very low and winds tore up the Gh's several times. Lost many of my plants! I think I posted awhile back when Lucy sent me a wonderful package with brugs and other plants. That started me off in the right direction! Thank you Lucy once again!!! I have had some local gardeners that I shared alot of plants with last year come to my rescue as well. I have been busy weekends trying to get plants in the ground and doing the landscaping a bit at a time. Working the hrs I do does not leave me much "playing in the dirt" time so I enjoy it when I can.

We are getting a steady rain tonite and I know my plants are doing the "Happy Dance" Things are starting to look great!

I will try to pop in more often as time allows and will post some pics when I have the gardens in better shape.

did you ever contact TCtopcat,I bought some Brugs from him
he forgot to put one in the package, so I called him on the phone, he said you were a saint for doing the co-op anyway he said he had some Brugs for you, so you might want
to call or visit him, glad you're back

I emailed him and he said he would get back with me when he had some for me. Out of the last batch of cuttings I bought from him I had ZERO survivors. And I had gotten so really nice ones. Still no word from him! I am sure by now they are all gone. Which cutting were you missing? I will try to contact him again. If I have what you are missing I will send you a cutting when mine get bigger.

Thanks, Jeff. I LOVE middle schoolers. Someone once said to me, back, oh, gosh...was it 22 years ago? I think it was! When I first went to middle school to teach math..."God has a special place in heaven for people who work with THAT age kid!" Let me tell you, middle schoolers are NO different from Kindergartners! Only difference? With middle schoolers you deal with hormones; with Kindergartners it's snot, pee, and tears. Both like the same things: stickers, warm fuzzies, lots of praise. Both are sensitive. Middle schoolers are just Kindergartners in bigger bodies. :) When people found out that I was teaching Kindergarten, it was such a shock. I can remember getting comments like, "What?! Sherry Skipper is teaching Kindergarten? Are you sure? She isn't teaching middle school? Not math? You're kidding." I would say, "First, I CHOSE to teach Kindergarten. After working strictly with adults, teaching math to teachers for years, and having DH say, "You need to go back to the classroom, hon" I thought, "hmmm...Kindergarten would be fun! Singing, reading stories, wearing crazy hats...building that important foundation before someone else screws 'em up...THAT'S what I want to do!" So, that's what I did. Eight years went by and I had this horrid teammate but the kids were adorable and I had a BLAST with them and with their families. The teaching aspect was remarkable and I look forward to seeing where these children go and what they become as they move into adulthood. Quite a few of my Kindergartners were the offspring of former middle school math students of mine (or even former elementary students) so it was a great experience all the way around. Moving UP to middle school is going to be awesome and I can't wait to get in there to teach the math full-time. My Kindergartners left with a really good foundation in math since I went WAY above and beyond (in science, too). I told the kids, "You are my last group of Kindergartners I will ever teach. I will see you next as 6th graders so you will get me once again when you are big kids." One of the moms was telling me that her daughter was taunting the younger sister, "Sorry, but you won't get Miss Skipper. I was in her LAST Kindergarten class." I am currently working concurrently on the new Monarch website with the new middle school math website. Learning a new web design program is sure taxing but it is heavenly to be sitting out in the backyard with the birds singing and chirping, the butterflies fluttering, the sun shining, the wind breezing through, and a break here and there for me to do a spot of gardening or picture taking or egg collecting...AHHHH...I am thrilled to be on holiday. I will look into the game you are talking about. Games are what I used for homework with my Kindergartners. Jane, Thank you for letting us know. What a sad thing for everyone in the family--it is especially devestating when one is taken at a young age when needed so much... I am sure you will fill some holes for this family as best you can and expect you will have a tremendous impact on the recovery of these little girls. Here's an even bigger hug Shelly!!!!! (((((((((((((((((HUG))))))))))))))))))) I know what you mean about how life can change so quickly. Our whole married life my DH and I have made about the same yearly salary which was great when we first got married and it was just the 2 of us, but not as great when you have 2 kids, mortgage, and you have to pay for your own health insurance. It was a struggle! When we merged our company, for the first time we were getting almost twice as much money, plus our health insurance was provided and we didn't have to pay anything except our co-pays!!!! That's why we ended up moving. We had a cute little ranch home (dining room part of the living room, small kitchen) so we finished off the basement and that is where we would have family gatherings. But 2 sisters and a niece were diagnosed with MS, my brother was in a car accident over 5 years ago and used a walker (at that time) to get around (now he is in a wheelchair), my dad passed away and my mom is getting older and it is harder for people to go up and down the steps to go into the basement. With our bigger salary, I always wanted a house with a dining room for entertaining so we bought a bigger house. I have a bigger kitchen, a seperate dining room and a family room which I love but it also came with a much bigger mortgage!!! When I was depressed I kept focusing on the fact that if we hadn't of moved our lives would be easier because the cut in pay put us back to what we had been making. After awhile I realized I can't change anything, we can't sell our house and get the money back that we put into it, we have great neighbors, we are in a better neighborhood than we were and I love all the room I have in my colonial! Normally I am upbeat and believe that humor gets you through a lot of bad spots. After 6 months I realized I couldn't change things so I just have to accept it and move on. It kills me that my kids have to help us pay bills but I am proud that I raised them right because they don't complain about it!!! My hubby does compressor repairs for some of his old customers so every once in a while he surprises me with a little cash and tells me to use it just for crafts, either garage sales or glass because he knows I enjoy doing them. Your hubby does sound like a wonderful person, I assume you have been married about 10 years or more? I've been married 27-1/2 years. I'm sorry you don't have a good relationship with your parents. Do you have brothers or sisters? Remember what they say, "You can't pick your family, but you can pick your friends!" I would say my family (I'm the middle of 5 kids...1 boy & 4 girls) was a lot closer before my dad passed away but that is a whole other story! LOL Barb

Linda congrats of having a job!!!! I believe in today"s economoy it is the number one concern everyone has.

I always gardened as a stressreliever. Now at times, like hauling the plants in and out and in and out just to safe them, turns pleasure into stress fast at times.

So as for me, I try to remind me a lot that the reason I garden is to relax and get rid of stress. Yes it is so sad when you loose plants, but it is not the end of the world and the worse thing. Right?

We have been getting rain also. Which is great compared to last year. Everything looks so green!

Linda, congrats on your new job, and I am sure this will be of great relief for you. Hopefully you will be in your new place now for a very long time, unless you want to move.

Hi all!

I am enjoying the new job, though I will admit it was a challenge at the beginning! The guy who had been working there walked out and left a 3-4 week backlog of work piled up and deleted alot of the old job files (which I was able to retrieve (partially). Having not worked in a year I had to really figure out the machines quickly and get everything caught up. I am now on top of things and thankfully had all my contacts to get questions answered about certain things that stumped me. Things should go along a little smoother now.
We have had rain and heavy wind the last 2 days--I found my GH on it's side this afternoon when I got home. It's back up and relocated now.
I thank you all for the offers of replacement plants, but I want to wait to see what does come back and what room I may have left to plant stuff. I have 2 more gardens planned at the back of the house and once I get the ground dug up, amended and start planting I will have a better idea.
This WILL be my LAST move!! Getting too old to do this again.
Elizabeth--I will call TC one weekend and see what he has going on down there this year. He is a really nice guy and I have enjoyed getting to know him better over the last 4-5 years. Hope he has some of the ones I had gotten in the fall that did not make it as cuttings.
Well-better get me some dinner and a shower and a fairly early night to bed. 4am comes early!!
