Does anyone keep pipevine in a container? (a. macrophylla)

I have 9 pipevine seedlings and have transplanted them into containers that are 3 or 4 gallon size. I have three in each container and I assume they will eventually get too crowded but right now they have lots of room.

We have a balcony above our patio so I'm hoping that if I set the pots on the patio, the vines can climb up the posts and I can check them from above on the balcony to look for eggs/cats.

Will they mind being repotted later and can I keep them in pots instead of planting them in the ground? How big will the woody growth get after a few years? Please tell me if this is a bad idea.

I have a couple of pots of aristolochia fimbriata (brazillian pipevine) and they have been in their respective pots for a couple of years. However, fimbriata does not vine like some of the other pipevines so I don't have to deal with the woody stems or vines. Since they have managed to stay happy and alive in the pots, I have not thought about transplanting them anywhere else. I don't have the macrophylla species so I don't know if this is much help.

Thank you for posting this. I also have some A. macro seedlings and I have the same questions as you. Hopefully someone who grows them in pots will advise us.

My ZD lived in a container for years. She really took off in the ground and is much healthier. You could probably use the Bayer drench on the ZDs in the containers and reduce the pest and fungacide issues---at least no spraying would be required. The problem with containers is always water.

Lisa - I looked at the map for Pipevine Swallowtails at the Butterfliesandmoths.org site and it does show them over a large part of Oklahoma but it didn't show any recent sightings. It only takes one though to leave a bunch of eggs so hopefully your pipevine will eventually be found and eaten. I wonder if I start finding dozens of eggs, if I could send them to you. : ) As of this morning, I only had 9 that were still eating. This afternoon it was down to 7. So it looks like my a. macrophyllas are going to get a break for awhile. I only have one a. fibriata plant and it's very small. I bought two a. tomentosas this week but I'm afraid to try to put them in the ground with it being so hot and dry right now. And I'm undecided on where to plant them. I'm not sure whether to put them in our yard or back along the treeline at the edge of our field. Mobot says it's "intolerant of dry soil". I'd like to plant it where it could climb into a tree but that's where the soil is dryest.

First thing you need to know is what the exposure of this landing is; does it get hot sun, no sun, which direction it faces(north/south/etc). Most vines will appreciate a larger sized pot to bloom well without drying out too quickly, and regular fertilizer to keep them blooming well. A glazed ceramic pot will hold onto water better, and may be better suited to a first time gardener. Wood and terra cotta pots dry out very quickly, and may even need watering twice a day if in full sun. I'd suggest a pot at least the size of 30 inches tall by 25 inches wide if here porch can accomodate that size, and perhaps a Mandevilla 'Sun Parasol Giant Crimson' as a very long blooming choice that likes full sun and blooms well if you give it some time release fertilizer at initial planting, and follow up twice a month with a liquid feed. If the pot only gets morning sun or bright shade, then an Abutilon will probably be a better choice for a long blooming plant than a vine, but there are also several Asarina species of Rhodochiton atrosanguineum is really choice, and blooms over a very long time. These two shade vines won't hold up to aggressive dogs, as they are delicate, so might need a taller pot to be out of reach of wagging tails, and a small wire obelisk or tower to climb upon.

Min, It might be more than one embryo per seed. At any rate, let them get much bigger then remove all but the strongest leader. Most commercially available Browneas are from air layers. Seedlings would be preferred for better root system and overall tree structure. Make sure that the root system doesn't start circling inside the pot. Don't let any go to waste! I've planted nearly fifty pipevines on my own personal residential grounds, and amazingly enough, the ones in containers currently look the best.

I have A. fimbriata, A. californica, A. tomentosa, and A. serpentaria all of which I have most of them in the ground and at least one of each in a pot. All the other ones are MIA or croaked. Now, I have seen a pipevine reemerge after being dormant for most of an entire year.

I have one A. tomentosa(me and the pack just walked up the way to check on it) in the ground that looks decent, but it has taken years to get established. This is all on my personal grounds where I do things according the natural tides of Life.

I think all nine of my a. macrophylla seedlings are still alive. I still have three each in three containers. I kept one container in my garage over winter and the other two against my south wall outside.
My seedlings didn't start growing much until late summer and then they all grew a foot or more and I had to untangle them from each other. It was difficult to get them apart without breaking the stems. (I did break a couple) So I think if I let them share a container this summer, they will always have to share. I'd never get them apart - unless they'll re-sprout when cut to the ground.
Maybe I need to put them in separate containers???

I'm so excited that they made it through the winter and if they grow fast enough, I'll be ready for the Pipevine Swallowtails this summer.
