Best bloom time in S. Calif? (for a visit)
Comments (2)Descanso Gardens believes that the best time to visit the International Rosarium is in April and October. Support for that thesis is indicated by the fact that rose shows in Southern California begin in the last two weeks of April at San Fernando and Pacific Rose Society (at the Arboretum). Given the current weather, right now is not really the best time. I have bloom in my garden, but decent bloom is easily two or three weeks away. JMO, of course....See MoreSouthern Calif. Comments (7)YO! Years ago I was planning on building a collection of native Dudleya species but got sidetracked by other priorities. D. brittonii was on my list but never got around to getting any. But I was over in Lompoc years ago and there was a nursery there that had 3 pots of Dudleya edulis. Got them all and they ended up on top of my back porch roof where they get plenty of sun and not too much water! They survive up there with some native Opuntia littoralis , probably, (one saved from a Nipomo development-they literally scrapped off all the vegetation and dump it and a couple from near Thousand Oaks), along with some Polypodium californicum , the original little plant that I found up in the chaparral above Santa Barbara. They seem to love it up there though it can really get hot during midday but becomes shaded during early afternoon. What I enjoy most about the fern is that I do not even have to water them as they just dry back and come back with the rains. The D. edulis produces viable seed and I get seedlings popping up in my mosses. Guess I need to take some photos of them....See MoreThenardia floribunda and Cobretum in n. calif?
Comments (5)Brandon, Thanks for the feedback on your experience with the Thenardia, maybe I will pick one up at San Marcos Growers to trial it in my Berkeley garden. In reply to the others, I know the Thenardia has never been offered at Annies Annuals, so possibly Stan was speaking of the Combretum, but the reply was rather cryptic, so who knows. To refute Joe's statement, I have seen at least the Solanum wendlandii seeming to thrive on the entry fence at Flora Grubb Nursery here in San Francisco, and I think it was planted out the fall before, so it has gone through one winter, and was blooming heavily in June. So at least it can be grown in summer here, but the jury is probably still out as to whether it will survive/thrive long term over one or more winters. I had always heard the same as Joe's spiel that Combretum and this Solanum were not reliable vines for northern California, but it is encouraging to see that some people may be succeeding with them. I suspect that neither one would do much in my own garden with no real summer heat, so Brandon, can you tell me whether the Thenardia only seems to grow well with hot summers, beyond taking some winter chill?...See MoreHas anyone in Southern Calif. planted a Green Giant Thuja?
Comments (6)I planted one GG last year in Z8 Texas with drought of about 23" of rain for the year, no growth visible. This year is much wetter, and it has grown about 6". My impression is that it will do ok here once established but will not provide the advertised 3-4 ft. yearly growth. We have several 5 yr. old Leyland Cypress that suffered die-back and we watered to save those remaining. Saw several Leyland die last year in other settings around here. 23" rainfall is insufficient for them. Don't think they will survive well with much less than 32"/yr. How much rainfall do y'al get? Have you considered Arizona Cypress or Eastern Red Cedar? They are both able to survive on 23" of rainfall and make a nice screen....See MoreJillberto
