G'day, new member & material for hanging Neos

G;day all - I've just joined the forum and have had a bit of a look - some great pics and info, so looking forward to digesting it all. Am hoping there's a few Aussies here as would be great to exchange some broms over time - Im a fairly new bromaholic but the collection is growing - mainly Neos )love the foliage colours) but starting to add some others.

So question and my apologies if already covered. I'd like tomount some Neos (mostly minis) to create some smallish wal hangers. I saw some posts here on larger vertical/seep walls whick look great but at the moment Im starting smaller - looking at something than will be able to hang and support 3-4 mini neos and that can be moved without too much drama. Can someone please let me know what material is best suited or perhaps which materials shouldn't be used with Broms (have heard treated wood for ex is no good (?) so there goes the excess lattice idea...)

Any help wld be greatly appreciated - cheers folks.

Plastic/Re-constituted lattice might work if lattice is the look you are after.

Framed galvenised metal might work.

Driftwood hung on the wall is another option.

I like mini's in hanging baskets, those half shaped hangers that attach to a wall would be another idea.

Cheers Rick - some good ideas there so thanks. Not so much after the lattice look more that its light and I've got a backyard full of broken bits... - hoping the broms will soon cover whatever attached too anyway - just as long as residue from lattice or iron etc isn't going to distress the plants.

I have not had any problem with the sqruells. They don't bother with vegetables. But if you have fruit trees, that is another thing. Instead I have problem with rats. They chew up the plants stems, dig out the seeds, eat melons. I have several methods to deal with them, because just one single way is not enough. I almost wiped them out last year. 1- live trap 2- rat trap 3-water bucket trap 3-Baits: commecially sold,OR: plaster of Paris+flour+sugar; substitute baking soda and or add some; Add ground aspirin to any combination. KEEP EDIBLE ITEMS AWAY FROM GARDEN AREA. OTHERWISE THEY WILL KEEP COMING BACK FOR MOR AND WHEN THEY DO NOT FIND FOOD, WILL CHEW ON YOUR PLANTS. To kepp rabitts away: 1- when you see them, chase them, throw things at them, yell at them. SCARETHEM OFF 2- sprinkle hot ground chili peppers around things they eat. They seem to have a very sensative nose and do not like smell of hot peppers. I follow these tactics and have no problems with rabitts and there are plenty of them around. but they just try to stay away, for their own safty(hehe), as they are very shy and get scared.

You are all suggesting things regarding the roof panels that I have been struggling with. Sliding door panels, if I can get them from one of my window-guys, would definitely be the most cost effective -- since they'd be free. The 'dangerous broken glass' aspect of putting them on the roof is definitely a consideration. We don't get hail storms here like they do in some parts of the country, so the material's resistance to hail damage is lower on my list of priorities. The BH&G greenhouse plan uses the twin-wall polycarb. That's also a contender . . . but I'd rather have some sort of glass so I can look at the sky. Wyndyacre, the idea of renovating and living in an old school is so cool. How much of the old school stuff was still in the building when you bought it? We don't have a web site . . . yet. Like you, I would love to do it one day -- soon, I hope. I'm not dedicated enough to document things in a blog -- tried it briefly, and I discovered it's just not my thing. I have hundreds (maybe thousands) of photos of the place and all the projects at various stages of completion. If it's not too off topic, here's a few for you: A good view of the front of the house -- built in 1848.: What it looked like in 1954, before the previous owners removed the dormer and the original gingerbread trim: This is the view to the rear of the property. I plan to put the greenhouse in the area at the lower right -- approximately in line with the other two buildings. The cedar tree will be limbed up a bit, and I think it will make a great backdrop for the new building. (I think this photo brings us back on topic.) zengeos, if you go to a salvage yard for windows, you have to actually pay for them. Contact some replacement window companies in your area and ask them if they'll save some of the ones they remove for you. That's where a lot of mine have come from. In fact, the ones I plan to use for the south wall of my greenhouse are brand new -- the contractor measured the openings wrong and the windows were the wrong size . . . so they gave them to me instead of throwing them out. Sliding glass door panels are throw-away items. You're probably not going to find them anywhere sold as salvage. To use them on a roof, you would have to do like installing a skylight and use flashing around them before you put on the shingles. I know it's a greenhouse and a little leak shouldn't be a big deal . . . but I'd rather try to avoid leaks if I can. I volunteered with Christmas in April (now 'Rebuilding Together') for many years, and I have seen the carnage that a little leak can create in a wood structure. I'm having so much fun scheming this project. I know my husband loves the idea of my emptying the outbuildings of my salvaged treasures and using them for something worthwhile. I'm very thankful I could use wyndyacre's photos of her greenhouse to show him approximately what I'm trying to do. Very nice plan. I agree with pretty much all of MyDreamHome's suggestions for making it even better. I can't see some of the dimensions so I am a bit worried that the master closet might not be wide enough to hang clothing on both sides as sketched. A closet needs to be at least 7 ft wide to do that comfortably. If necessary, I'd steal a few inches out of the master bedroom rather than have the closet too narrow. You'll never miss 6 to 10 inches less in a bedroom that is 16 to 17 feet wide but the extra space in the closet (and bathroom) could make a major difference in how comfortable and useable they are. In addition, since you're going to get rid of the door from master bedroom out to back porch anyway, I'd suggest a couple of other changes. First, bump the breakfast nook back another foot of two at least. With a family of six, you can't all sit at the breakfast bar. So, unless you're actually planning to use the dining room for all family dinners, your nook needs to be large enough to accomodate a dining table that will seat at least six... more when one of your kids invites a friend to stay for dinner. Using a window seat to create partial 'booth' seating would allow you to fit a larger table into a small room but I still think you would do well to add another couple of feet. Then, if your building codes will allow it, condider using a patio door that opens outward from the nook to your covered back porch. Doors that open outward work very well when they open onto a well-covered outdoor space and they're actually safer in areas prone to high winds because they don't blow open as easily. Then, since the left end of your porch won't really get much use if you don't have a door into the masterbedroom, consider closing in the left three feet or so at the end of the porch and make that space into a nice large outdoor closet for storing all your grilling supplies. And, consider moving your masterbedroom door to where you have that little hall closet now and then see if you can't then get rid of the walls that turn your back entry area into a maze of hallways. With four kids, a single fairly-large open room (like a back foyer) with storage cubbies and benches around the edges would be much more useful than what you have now. You might need to shift the opening from the back foyer into the kitchen/breakfast nook area and the laundry room door but I think you can create a 7x12 'mud room' with cubbies that will be more useful than the spaces you have now. You would think in Oklahoma (and here where I am in Texas) everyone would have a basement as a place to retreat to in case of a tornado but here in Texas everything is now built on a monolithic slab with no basement. So, if you're not going to have a basement remember that you can open up the space under the stair case landing and make it part that storage room you show opening off of the garage. And, if that garage storage space is for storing things like bicycles, I don't think I'd bother with a wall and door there. I'd just leave all the space UNDER the stairs open to the garage. Would make it easier to access. And, if you do that, you might be able to move the entire staircase forward a couple of feet so as to make your back foyer/mudroom larger and more comfortable. Just my nickle's worth... Except for the cramped back hallway and a few other minor things that mydreamhome already discussed, it's a great plan and your new home is going to be lovely! Welcome Pharoh. Thank you so much for sharing those kitchen photos, which of course totally blew me away like everyone else. Being a biologist with a particular interest in thing aquatic, your kitchen was like a dream to me, like a "I've died and gone to heavan" kitchen. My own kitchen is very small and completely lacking in counter space. Since it is a row house, no chance of expanding, lol! I'm a vegetarain too, although no gourmet. I'm basically what I call a "hash cook." I have no patience for manipulating and arranging my food, so I specialize in stews and soups! Also cheap food. I can no more do good phyllo than play the violin, lol! I love eating Indian and Asian food, although I don't cook it that often, I just don't have the ingredients around for it. I seem to specialize in mediterranean cooking, I have yet to find a mediterranean cuisine that I didn't love, most recently I have been doing N. African due to the influence of this forum and one of our virtual dinners. How I envy you living in CA, you have access to all the best ingredients all the time. Welcome, glad you're here! Lpink

Hi Kristan,

We often overlook the obvious when looking for a solution to a problem, and that's why I'd like to suggest you try mounting your plants on some old mallee root, as some of these have some very interesting shapes and would greatly compliment the brom's. (That's of course if you have access to them, and I am only assuming you do juding by your name).

Nev - you're a spot on, do over look whats right in front of us however today at a mates farm there was a freshly fallen gum tree right in front of me (big storm/winds in this area yesterday) so another mate will be attacking it with a chainsaw next week so will hopefully get a few nice logs/hollows to use. you are also right again - some proper mallee root would look great so will be working on that - cheers for making me think local.

cheers - paul. yep already having lots of fun learning and watching my broms grow and this forun will help that no end. There are no brom societies/nurseries etc where I am so is great to find a place to learn, ask and share the enthusiasm.

Hey Kristan, always good to see new members and have them stimulate more discussions. I like using whatever I have around the yard. We had to thin out a couple of trees pretty hard and the branches have been of great use for me. For smaller branches, I have both screwed/nailed them into wall posts and suspended from overhead boards. These two ways I have mostly used for Tillandsias, but I have also put in some mini Neos as well...oh, and I apologize, I swear they look better in person than in photographs...

The branches that are screwed into the wall are nice as you can mimic natural branch angles where mini Neos look good. I have attached with stainless steel wire, jute rope/yarn, finishing tack nails, and some people use pantyhose. I'm so dry/low humidity that I don't expect much root growth even with daily sprayings, so I'm happy as long as they are firmly attached. Oh, I also have a vertically hanging branch that I have a series of Neos tied on at different heights...

If you don't have a structure to attach branches to, the larger branches can be made into nice little 'trees'. I cement them into a 5 gallon pot either vertical or at an angle. The potted part can be 'planted' in the ground or if balanced left on the surface as the concrete is usually heavy enough.

These are pretty much all new this year (as I'm fairly new to this addiction too), so I'm hoping they will fill in a little bit more and end up looking a little more natural in a year or two. My advice is be creative and use what you have handy. Good luck.

no need to apologise at all - pics look great, though I don know what you mean - hard to catch the bdetail.light etc of each plants. All your set ups will look fantastic when they plants continue to fill out. has definetely given me some ideas on different set ups so cheers again for sharing.

I've been away with mates over the weekend and I cant wait for tomorrow to get outside and check on all my broms - hhmmmm addicted??
