Yes I would love to hear from the OP too. OP? As far as too blue, nope, it's an Eastern Red Cedar. I know this tree, grew up with it. It's very blue when young. The color warms up to green as they get older, and then darkens to a darker green as they get even older. We have them all around here and their seedlings, right under the trees, are blue. In the winter, the mature tres turn more olive, and the males get a reddish tinge to them. I use the seedlings to make topiaries. They grow very fast when young. They have the pointed needles when young, then as they mature, the foliage morphs into scales. It is most definitely not a yew, sorry but that's not even close. Yew needles are thicker, flatter, shinier, and rich green even at a very young age. Yew leaves are also more regularly placed along the stem, unlike the more irregular look of the Juniperus genus. Attached is a collection of 3 pictures, one of seedlings, the second of a young plant, and the third of an older but still young plant. You can see the progression from blue to green. For comparison, also attached is a picture of a yew seedling I had in my yard myself.

atrump, which name were you before, eibren, Operaprincess? Well, whichever, I no longer have the "late drop" Live oak, it died. My Compton's oaks, I have since gotten several, are all fully hardy, and besides the one which just got attacked by a deer last night, are all great. I am having a deer problem eating my little seedlings, I have them protected, but, obviously not good enough. I am trying dog poop in containers with holes in them next to the seedlings, gross, but, deer can smell good, I think, hunters buy stuff to hide their smell, so I figured it's worth a try. I have a heavy acorn bearing oak, and I'm thinking that's what's bringing them in further up in my yard than ever before. This heavy bearer has been there for a while but, more deer have heard the news now. Those seedlings I haven't gotten poop around yet, well, I put my spit on them until I can get that poop out there tommorrow. So I'm either smart or a real dumb-ass, likely the latter. But, anyways, I have a Quartz mountain Live oak that a really nice guy sent to me from Missourri. It was likely about 4-5 yrs old when he sent it. It did great in last years winter, which was a pretty normal to mild winter. I put some christmas lights on it, the kind that throw of a bit of heat. The (NON LED) LED lights don't make any heat, so mine made a bit of heat. The tree put out some growth but we had the 17 yr cicadas this year, so any new growth was destroyed. My most successful attemp with Live oak in zone 6 Pa or something similar, and there are several of these threads because after there are so many pages, I started a new page. Hi! I'm an Ohio transplant and now live in Savannah also! Welcome to the sunny east coast! Been here 3 years, and I'm just beginning to scratch the surface of what I need to know about gardening in coastal GA. The one plant that I am planning to cultivate more of (I have 3 in pots right now) is Camelias. There are different types, Japonica, Sassanqua (hope the spelling isn't too terrible on that one), and others. I had a Camelia on my front porch that bloomed exquisite blooms all winter for me, in the shade of the porch roof. It was stunning - is about a 6 foot standard, I guess. This year I hope to find a deal on a couple of the Sassanqua Camelias. You should be able to grow them in the partial shade, but others will have to guide you as to whether they can grow in full sun here. I also have gardenias that tolerate most any light conditions you can throw at them. Though they are generally thought to thrive in shade, I have one in more sun than shade during the day, and it is my heaviest bloomer. They can also grow in pots. There is also a low-growing gardenia that can be used as an underplanting under larger trees and bushes, that grows well here. Their glossy green leaves are lovely all year. Although it's not a shrub, sago palms thrive here in Savannah. I have several and they stay green for me, all the way to the lowest fronds, as long as I keep them fertilized. I have a grouping of 3 of them under a bald cypress tree, and they make a stunning grouping also. I've seen them in full sun, partial sun, and nearly full shade. We can also grow a lot of types of grasses here, and many people use them for interest. What about a mound of Hakone grass, or one of the purple-blooming grasses? I'm just throwing out ideas here. I'm sure lots of the GWers here will have lots of interesting ideas. There are several people on the forums from Savannah and the islands area, so you will have the benefit of their experience here also. They have been very helpful to me, and very gracious. jeribelle

I almost forgot about the roof shingles being two different types and colors! What is being done about that?? Did they just go over the original shingles or take off and prep the area? Do you have gutters? If so do you have any leaf prevention added to the gutters? I'd check them out. Why am I asking? Just before I bought my own house, the roof had been replaced and I did not know it at the time, but there were several downspouts that were clogged that had caused water backups in the yard and water leaks in the house. When we got around to sleuthing what was really happening, (after repeated gutter "solutions" with various degrees of success) we discovered what the REAL problem was ....wait, you guessed it...old shingles were stuffed in the center of the downspouts!!! Don't let something like that happen to you! For yours, since there was apparently not supervision for them to put the correct shingles on your house, and for them not to notice, and to throw trash off your roof or at least pile up the trash all over and not clean up like their website states, find out what else might have been overlooked or rushed. They obviously need to redo the roof to all be one color and the actual color and type of shingle you specify. You need to have some serious meetings with your GC and this company and even see if they will be the ones to redo the work or not. Or maybe they would be fine with proper supervision, as is so often the case. And of course all of that correction, and supervision, will be on someones else's dime and not yours. The tree is still another matter and will need some very serious compensation or someone might be buying a new mature tree for you. I also had a devastating loss regarding a mature tree that was the pride of my backyard that unfortunately I had not realized the twisted branches that covered 1/3 of my park like backyard, was coming from the sister tree across the fence and on my neighbor's property and not my own. So when they unceremoniously chopped down their side of the sister 40 year old healthy Live Oak (the two tallest in the neighborhood), I was absolutely devastated. The branches were so intertwined I had no idea the tree I loved was half from the neighbors. I lost so much shade and privacy. So at least yours is clearly on your own property so I would fight that as strongly as you can. As you stated, these are lessons learned for going forward and I hope you get a good plan together for correcting these mishaps and prevention of others with the proper meetings and supervision, for the more detailed interior of your remodel.
