OT Anyone growing Japanese MG ?

I was wondering if any of you guys grow the Japanese MG ? I saw some on eBay, and they were to die for. If you do grow them, are they hard to get started ? Just curious.. Edna

Edna. if I were growing it I certainly share with you. I .think my computer is finally fixed. now I can talk to you have you got your brugs in the ground. by the way how many do you have. how are you. Elizabeth

Oooh, they would make good vine poles too, lol. Gonna get me killed girl, lol. I do have a whole bunch of Moonflower seeds I found just starting to sprout in a pot today. I can put one on Naughty Nick. That thing grows so fast and won't bloom until winter again probably. Would be a perrrfect candidate. (He says its his too, lol. I have some morning glories I got started today. I'm gonna put the blue ones on his Shredded White and the cypress vine on Hawaiian double white. Roflmao. He actually let me put a climbing rose in his bed today so I am going to sneak some clematis on the trellis tomorrow when he isn't looking, lol. I got all these dang vines to put on that big round gazebo but he hasn't helped me make the bed to plant them all so maybe he will get the hint when they are choking his other plants. I put an evergreen wisteria on one of the arbors today and an tangerine crossvine on the other. I wonder they will eat them in year or not, lol. Also put moonvines on both. I forgot to put a moonvine on the one rose trellis but I did the other one. I guess I was thinking about the clematis but I could put both. Oh my jasmine vine is blooming and smells so good. They look like little pinwheels. Going to get some bad storms tonight. I sure hope it doesn't hail on my newly planted stuff. Oh, I got a cool flower in the bed that popped up. I thinks its a fancy shredded sort of poppy. I gotta go take a pic before the storm kills it flat! Talk to you later.

Karyn, it was an oxalis, but it did not look like the others. It has a thick body, with like thorns on it. I planted it at the coast, and left the name next to it. It is not listed on the invoice, so I have no idea, I think it started with the letter g. I planted it in the sun, I am going down this weekend, and will contact them if they do not recover. The amaryllis, had 3 long leaves, the middle one was completely cooked, and just mush, the outside leaves were green, I cut it back. I will let you know how they are when I get back. I just received some plants from Puerto Rico, they are over a foot tall, they were the same price, these are replacements for the ones that I cooked in my greenhouse, when I first got it. I did the same thing Kristi did, when she got hers. I also cooked my rooted brugmansaia that I got from my secret santa, I guess that is how we learn..

Edna: Beautiful. What a good job of growing them you did. Are they difficult to germinate? Until this forum, I'd never even heard of J.MG. I think I will want to grow some on my trellis next year. Do most of the seed catalogs carry these? Thanks for the lovely pictures. Gloria

I have that one. It's more of a magenta then a true red. It looks just like the pic on the link you posted. I don't do anything different with this one then any of my others. I don't feed often and water when necessary. Honestly I pretty much ignore them. I would hold the seeds and start them in the early spring. If you start them now you probably won't get blooms and it's not a plant that grows well indoors without full spectrum grow lights. There's quite a bit of trading Japanese MG's, including the Hige varieties on the seed exchange. It's a pretty flower. You'll enjoy it.

I've got some of those blue/purple striped ones started, Shibori? I think, something like that..but it also has a really long name starting with 'A' that I can't remember right now lol...no blooms yet this year, though. I had one of the same kind growing inside a couple winters ago that had a couple tiny blooms, but didn't like being inside and died :/
If I didn't have an apartment I'd definitely have more than one kind, though

Edna I grow loads of Japanese MG's. Actually Mike just sent me some as well. I'll send you a mix. They are so easy to grow as long as you keep them in a sunny area. I just nick and soak my seeds overnight and most will germinate in 24-72 hours.

Anyone care to share pics of their MGs, especially the Japanese ones, along with the best instructions on how to get them germinated for hanging baskets please?

I have some pics in the 'Vines Forum', a bunch of us do. They aren't something that you can really grow in a hanging basket. They get too long and you really can't prune them back. To germinate just nick or file the seed coat then soak them in water overnight. They'll germinate in 24-72 hours. Plant them in a sunny location.

I agree they don't really like to be in hanging baskets because they want to grow straight up and wont hang. Japanese MGs are no harder to start than the regular ones. Some don't seem as prolific with seeds but that must just depend on the variety.

They are to agressive of a climber to put in a basket..I do use them as ground cover in a few areas as well as Clematis.. Not a whole lot work to keep them in check...LOL

SJN I've found that I have to hand pollinate a number of the Japanese varieties and even then it's hit and miss.
