I know someone who uses hair clipping in her vegetable garden because she says it keeps the deer, etc.. away from it. What is the purpose for using it in pots? I don't think I would use human hair in my garden, lol, but I do sometimes put clumps of my dogs fur tucked into my flowerbeds to try to keep the neighbors cat from pooping in them. It doesn't work too well though :( Any idea how to keep cats out of the flowerbeds?

Shawn the only thing I have ever tried but it didn't work but it was recreational was a super soaker squirt gun. My neighbors cat used to lay under my bird feeder so I kept my super soaker by the back door (Just to let everyone I am a cat lover so please don't get mad at me). He eventually got conditioned to know if my back door opened he was going to get wet.

I've only heard of using hair to keep unwanted animals away as well. What is the reason that you are using it?

I always put hair human, dog, cat, feathers whatever in the compost pile it is a protien..They are a slow release.. For unwanted animals I use ground dried habaneros (LOL ground these outside) and for deer if you take a soap like Irish Spring (something really smelly) and shave it off scatter it around they won't come up.. and it lasts for a long time..

Kylie, if I'm ever in Texas I'll just sniff the breeze for Irish Spring to find your house, lol. That is a good tip to keep the deer away, and I may have to try the habaneros.

Karyn it's for weed control and added protein like Kylie stated. Only hair that hasn't been treated should be used and the photos that showed the difference was shocking, the plants were double in sized. But again I want to see this with my own eyes, so when our baby got a hair cut her hair was used. I'm sorry but my 3 foot hair isn't going to be cut for this!!

Karma maybe if you dig some in as well it would help the protein to break down? Keep us posted on how this goes.

Shawn, don't know if it will work, but I just ordered two Scarcrow motion activated sprinklers. I am so fed up with these cats coming in my yard, that I am willing to try these sprayers and hope it deters the cats. Also, last year, someone or some people came into my front yard at night and stolen the remaining avocados off my tree. This year, I will have the Scarcrow to give them a big wet surprise!

Hey Eloise: That is one of my pet peeves ... people just reaching up and picking fruit off a tree obviously growing on private property. Just because the fruit is in clear sight doesn't mean it is there for the taking! To steal avocados is almost like grand theft lol. They stay $$ all year round, esp. Hass, fresh, and heavy! I put all my thorny rose clippings where somebody's cat was "visiting". It made the ground annoying to walk on or scratch in, and broke the cat's habit of using my garden as its litter box.

Eloise that sucks! I'd be so pissed, especially because I love fresh avocados. Before the airlines cracked down I used to pack my suitcases full of avocados and artichokes whenever I visited Southern CA. I'd be afraid to put them in my suitcase now : ( The worst that has happened to me is people stealing my flowers. At least they have the decency not to uproot the whole plant but still.....

Gloria, I too would prefer 'buckshot', but don't think I could get away with it, even if they are inside my property! BTW, my avocados are Hass. Last season, I heard a noise outside and there was a girl climbing my gate to get out. Her mother, who had a child in a stroller, was waiting for the girl who had visited my Santa Rosa plum tree. I was so pissed that I yelled (like a mad woman) at them calling them thieves. How can kids learn when parents encourage them to steal?

Karyn, I live close to a school, and the kids and their parents also cut my flowers. Re. avocados, last year, I mailed a box of avocados to my sister in NM. It was meant as a surprise because they had been here and she saw the avocados on the tree, but they weren't ready. After almost two week that she hadn't acknowledged the box, I called and asked if she had received a priority box from me. Since she hadn't, I decided to look at my receipt, and noticed I transposed two number on the zip so it went to Tucson, AZ. I was emailing my sister telling her where the box might be and either they would return it to me or she would end up with a box of guacamole, when she called that her hubby had opened the box and said, "Why would she send this?" LOL, the avocados had all turned mushy and black!
