Guess What I Found Today (Picture)

Hi everyone,

I was out on a walk again today and decided to look over some of that wild common milkweed and look at who I found!

This really made my day! When I first spotted it, it was happily eating away at one of the buds. By the time I took this picture (had to come back home to get the camera), he had moved to the leaf. I think s/he's going to sleep for the night. Looked at some of the other milkweed plants growing nearby and didn't see one caterpillar. I think I saw frass though lol. Anyways, I just wanted to share my happy day with you all! Enjoy! Sorry for the blurriness.

Better you Edna than me. After all my recent run in with snakes if I never see another one it will be just fine with me. LOL I've also seen an abundance of toads and frogs with spring. I can't walk without having to be careful where I put my foot. The other day I killed two of them by accident. I ran the lawn mower over them, I think they were doing something nasty because one was on top of the other and that's how they died. Poor things, I felt so bad, but this place is running a muck with frogs, toads, lizards, snakes, LOL and who knows what all else. The Beavers were attempting to take over the lake and we had to go beaver hunting. They were cutting all the trees down and they were falling into the lake/pond making a dam and so forth. They had to go......we ran them off to the neighbors ponds. LOL Isn't nature just wonderful?. You just never know what your going to see lurking around in the darndest places. Happy Gardening, Marian

Hiya Pug, Thanks so much, it was thoughtful & kind of you to bump this up so Tish & I could read the Stemma article about Ruby Sue & Royal Flush. I can't read pdf files at home either (I don't have current versions of Adobe Acrobat, Tish that mey be your problem as well). But my office computers are current & much more secure than home; was able to read it no problem (& of course, the pix are SUPERB. I even recognize pix of Gabi's H. multiflora, from later in the issue). Fascinating to hear from Herman Engelman's nursery man about their planning to upgrade their mix. I like that they copped to having made up the name "Snow Caps". Wish they'd do the same for "Stripes" which is actually Curtisii. Now, if only there'd been a way to ask why so many of their plants come mis-labeled. Guessing that wouldn't have been too gracious for a visitor to their greenhouse. So these ARE 2 new variants of Lacunosa, like I didn't love it enough already! But the one that really makes my heart flutter is the Lacunosa that has small dents in the leaves, almost like a miniature Krinkle 8. Is this the one they call Lacunosa 'Tove'? I find it from time to time, but don't have any currently. Anyway, thanks again, VERY interesting reading!

I love little surprises in the garden. A couple of years ago I got a white bouquet of roses but the stems were pretty skinny and I thought it would't even be worth the time saving so I put the little guy after cutting off the spent blooms out by the mailbox. Today that rosebush has thirty gorgeous roses on it and is so healthy and trouble free.. You go for it !!!

Karen, When you click on this link. Click on picture gallery. Shows many pages of sans. One was my table in front of the window. Another was 'woodnative' office window picture of his sans. When click on, it takes you to this site. Other pictures on there as well. I saw tall sans cut and loaded in a cardboard box. Maybe one inch of root on each stock. Clicked on the picture and was on a wholeseller from Taiwan. Another shows rolls of dwarf hahnii sans in a green house also another Taiwan wholeseller. Can't miss.

When I go on my walk later, I'll see how much it's eaten lol. I'll try to get a better picture too.

I am very happy to say when I saw the cat yesterday, it looked like it had grown! It seems it likes to eat the flower buds. There's a few bites that it took out of a leaf but no more. Mind you, this is all on the plant I found it on. I *think* I saw an egg too but I'm not sure. It looked like a Monarch egg though from what I remember reading.

I wish I could bring it home with me but I'm sure it's happy where it is. It's just as well since my WS common milkweed is on the small side. My WS swamp milkweed is growing taller however. WS tropical milkweed and butterfly weed are perhaps the strongest of the bunch. Not blooming yet but are they ever growing!

Hey Brad, sounds like you are well on your way to growing a great habitat for the monarchs.

If everything is newly planted this summer, your plants should take off next year! (butterfly weed takes 2 years though)

If you want larger/blooming tropical all summer, pot a couple plants over winter and take cuttings.

If I would have realized how much faster the cuttings grow, I would have planted more! Good luck with your patch, Tony

They're doing good this year and they were planted some time ago. Butterfly weed is in a pot with WS rattlesnake master. I got it at one of the dollar stores and it looks like an old fashioned bushel. From what I read, they should do well together (I think they would look nice together too).

I just might have to take cuttings from the tropical milkweed! Gives me another houseplant to take care of :-). I already grow some of their tropical relatives, the hoyas, as houseplants so they'll be right at home!
