Photinia: Pruning to keep a natural shape

jenn

Our landscape designer planted a large Photinia on both sides of a large front window as anchor foundation plants and to semi-hide the bare walls. He chose it for the foliage color and contrast with the white stucco and surrounding plants.

I do NOT want a shrub that will need sheering into a box shape --- I prefer a natural look with stems that blow in the breeze, like how the plant looks now while it is still young.

I'm wondering if it will tolerate selective pruning to maintain a more natural appearance, or if it inevitably will need sheering into a box. Will it be possible to keep it this way without frequent pruning? Or should we replace it with something else before the roots take hold?
