They're Here, They're here!!!! Quick need an answer PLZ!!

I got my Co-Op pkg about 20 mins ago!!! Thank you so much Linda, Linda, & you too Gloria! I potted them up, now when I water them should I use the Nasty Fish gook? MG? Plain rain water??

I wish I had ST but I don't so what's best to use? They are pretty dry so I need to water asap. Then I will put them outside in a shady area to perk up, it's so nice today.

I always water in my new plants with a little ST if I have it, if not its no big deal. I don't ever fertilize (not even with fish emulsion) when I first pot them up. Think of it as a transplant.. and wait at least a few weeks, I usually wait about 3. Keep it in a shady spot for a few days and gradually move into morning sun etc, no extreme temps because you don't want to shock them ~they think they are still in Florida lol.

But aren't mothers also happy for the independence and commitment children display as they wind their ways through this wonderful world? He's a big boy, he will be fine and Haiti will be a better place when he leaves it!. I am certain he will report on "pretty" and "funny", too. That he is committed enough to move there reflects brilliantly on all the "basics" learnt at home. :) Never thought about attempting to sell floorcloths, Cindy. They're a lot of work and I have no belief that anyone would be willing to pay me handsomely for the time required. Though perhaps I ought to rethink that as a designer for whom I've worked expressed interest in them, too. I can't wait to see my brother's reaction; he's always been one of my biggest "boosters" and all my life he's done one kind and generous thing after another for me. I get a genuine charge out of doing silly little things for him. Excellent assignment for a poor student with a definite attitude problem, 'bug. Lol. Bet that's gone over like a lead balloon with Mommy-dearest. It won't kill him, doubtless he'll live to lie another day. ;) Time to begin sealing the underside of the piece. Later!

In general, less water = hotter peppers, and more sun = hotter peppers. The converse is also true. Wet and shady will make the pods less hot. However, it doesn't sound off the cuff as though those are your issues. It could be that you're at a point in the S. African growing season when the plants would be less hot. My blazing-hot Jalapenos in August are no hotter than bell peppers in October, no heat at all. late season pods can have very different heat profiles than early/mid season pods. But really, what you have to do is find someone nearby who's growing habs, or at least peppers, and see what kind of results they're getting. Then you will able to quickly determine whether it is your plants, you, or your regional growing situation. The most important thing is not to get too emotionally attached to a plant...I recommend a cat...LOL Believe me I know the feeling. I raised 72 plants from seed in March, constantly watching over them after building a custom growing system with heating pads, timers, and so on, for them. I spent two months nursing them into big, beautiful plants ready for transplant. I had each plant numbered in a diary, with a complete growing history, and hundreds of digital photos. Then I brought in one plant from a store, and it had aphids. The entire setup got completely infested. In a panic I spray insecticide, but the wrong type or something, and it killed the plants. Whoa! Very disappointing. Well, after being really bummed out, I started over with store bought plants. Many of those didn't make it either - worms, aphids, beetles, wilt, rot, rainstorms, cold, heavy winds that blew some over, blah blah blah. Eventually it all worked out and I got many hundreds of pods this season. But along the way, I learned that they're just plants and their job is only to give you something to eat, before you throw them out at the end of the season - they're not people or pets LOL Not to be too philosophical about it, but hope that helps.

Brining has become an issue here as well. I won't order a meat dish that has been brined & I don't trust the menu descriptions so I always ask before ordering. Even as recently as fall '08 it wasn't a problem. Then, as if struck by the same salt lightening bolt chefs all started brining. A waiter once told me, "Oh, the brine doesn't make the meat too salty. It just makes it tender." I said, "Hmmm, if the salt doesn't penetrate the meat how is the brine tenderizing the meat? The salt has to start breaking down the meat for it to seem more tender, right?" End of our conversation. Ya know, I live at the coast in New England, land of salt cod (basically descicated fish). Everything here is coated in sea salt. If I'm outside for more than 10 minutes I can taste it on my tongue. I can smell it as soon as I open a window or go out the door. A day in the garden means a salt encrusted face. I see every day what it does...rust & corrosion on our boat's SS is only one example. It's even hard on our home's siding/roofing. Many plants won't grow here...they lay down and croak 'cause of the salt. Soooo, I figure it's corroding my inside as well! rofl Back in my early 30s when I was bodybuilding my trainer insisted I cut sodium out of my diet. It changed my palette forever. I don't do the "salt each layer as you cook" thing. I rarely add salt at all to anything. I've been accused here of having "bland food" because I don't even use salt in my CCCs. Oh, the horror. :) Truthfully, salt is a conditioned taste. I can't eat baked goods with salt. Salt does not enhance the flavor of chocolate, to me. It covers the taste of chocolate. Oh, I also don't add a handful of salt to pasta water. When I eat a salty food it's likely the only salt, other than naturally occuring, I've eaten the entire day & I can still feel it's effects in my mouth for hours. I even limit the amount of oysters & clams I eat because they are salty...hard because they are so readily available here. Reducing salt was the primary reason we've started making homemade bacon. For fine dining, I've learned sauces & gravies can be counted on to be too salty for my tastes. I always ask they be either on the side or not served at all. I use oil/vinegar for salads. Since the brining thing became the rage eating out is becoming a challenge. /tricia

I want to say that Alan Kapuler of Oregon and Peace Seeds was one of the first people to do such a thing. I haven't had a project where i deliberately aimed to hybridize a particular hybrid variety. I think in most cases i would just save the seed. Sure a little bit of segregation and or changes could occur over time, but in most cases i really doubt its a big deal. Seed companies try to make you think what they offer is one of a kind and that it you save seed that it will never grow the same again. In some cases that might be true for one or two generations after, but after that they start to stabilize again. I bought some seeds for Polar Bear hybrid white pumpkin. I have no problems saving seed from it were i to grow it. Joseph Lofthouse has several landrace projects he is working on which are amazing. His attempts have inspired me to work on my own and even a few collaboration projects like our watermelon landraces that grow and thrive in Colorado and Utah where traditional watermelon genetics fail miserably. (it is starting to show some good success). Joseph however knows a great deal about hybrid crops like sunflowers and carrots where ALL commercial hybrids of these crops contain male-sterile genes!!! What that means that it is very difficult to dehybridize carrots and sunflowers without male sterility to show up again each generation. But he knows how to do it and has done it. Amazing stuff. The only major projects i'm working with and making my own hybrids right now are with peas. Peas are great because they are naturally inbreeding. Which means that once you make a cross all you need to do is grow them out several generations and the genes separate back. The hard part is making the cross in the first place. One pea i'd like to cross is the marrofat type pea named Biskopens that has red seeds. It has excellent heat tolerance and grows into late july. But it takes a very long time to flower and grow. Therefore i am hoping to cross it to any dwarf or faster growing variety of pea.

I agree with SJN, no fertilizer yet. I use ST and B-1 when I pot bare root plants or transplant. If you don't have either of those just use plain water. Good luck with your plants.

Congrats.. Yep ST but since you don't have it I would use rain water.. That extra molecule seems to make them happy...Good Luck!!!

Thank you, I did use plain rain water, and figured if you all got back saying I should use something else, I would gently water again w/that. Thanks for the input guys!
They are already perking up. The box was smashed at one end, and 2 were broken, I hope they'll be OK. I wonder where that happened..I wouldn't doubt it was on my end. I have had a sub mailman the last 2 days, he's young & prob doesn't give a crap. Can't wait for my guy to get back.
OK it's too nice to be in here, I'm goin back outside to dig dig dig!!! The 8 yr old just came in to report that the 4 yr old knocked over the wheel barrow of manure..nice.

Here in the LA Basin of So Cali our rain water is more like Acid Rain!! So all rain water is not created equal!!! Sometimes ... even with the chlorine ... city water can be better choice!!! Besides, if you allow the chlorinated water to sit for 24 hrs, the chlorine will dissipate. Good luck, Daniella. Hope you are soon surrounded by great looking and smelling Brugs!!! Gloria

I got mine today too, and just in time! I'm leaving at some strange hour of morning on tuesday, and this is the last day they could have arrived that I would've had a chance to do something with them :) I wasn't expecting them, I was so surprised! in a looong stretch of inconvenient days, they arrived on the ONE convenient day possible. I love it when that happens, it's usually the opposite. lol.

they're extremely wilted and I don't blame them, LOL. the more hardwood part seems pretty firm but the thick green stems are a little rubbery. the growing tip on the coral pink appears to have just given up, but the ecuador has some decent sized leaves and they seem to be perking back up again :)

so, someone needs to tell me when I get back who to send the moneys to! :) omg, and I think I still owe theresa money for the lotus tubers! if I owe anyone money please let me know. lol. things have been so crazy lately!

thanks again, lindas and gloria and everyone on here that made this possible. you guys are absolute dolls.

Mine arrived on Sat. too at the PO, but I was at work so they'll have to sit there till tomorrow :( I hope they all survived.

I picked mine up today and they were still healthy :) They were a little dry from that extra time spent at the PO but I potted em up and gave them a good drink. Ipotted them into 4 inch pots because thats all I had, the could have probably gone a little bit bigger. If they become rootbound in those before the end of may when I can plant out, should I repot or let them be until then?
