When it's time to move!

For a month I had to move all of my collection to the new place,

because I gonna build a new house....really hard work friends !!!

That is quite an operation.

You must have got hurt moving all those spinies. How bad did they sting you?

What a massive and difficult job to move such a splendid collection.
I wonder, like Sander, how you fared physically? I always look at your arms when you post photos with you in it, and am amazed to see how smooth and scratch-free they are! As they say, "Protection is a good thing" !
Well done - you must be relieved to finish the move. Your collection looks great in its new home. Is that your new neighbour's yard? Or do you share it?
Your old backyard looks so much smaller now it's empty. Did you have to move your plants far? How many people helped? - and what do their arms look like now?

I guess you never want to move again? Welcome home.

Well, they are still under a heat lamp but it's a foot above them. I will be decreasing the heat and even turning it off as the weather gets warmer. There are three of them and I believe they are about four weeks old. We are planning to put them outside in an enclosed area that is part of our chicken run. I suppose better safe than sorry.

I looked at your stands on the other thread. I have the same baker's rack style meant for ventilation. I don't use trays on those, just saucers. Because the shelves are meant to provide healthy air circulation. Using trays would block the ventilation. I use trays on other set ups where the shelf base is not a rack but is solid. As long as leaves are not touching it might not matter. However, if Linda uses trays, then her advice is the "gold standard" at this time on the Forum ! I alternate top and bottom watering. Now when I repot a place a wick in the pot. That way I can experiment with a few plants at a time to make sure the wick is working well. Rather than overcrowd my shelves I set up various other arrangements. For more serious growers who have specialized shelves and air circulation , most use trays, wicks, egg crate or mats. When I first joined the forum , I read up on this on a lot if older threads. The best set up seems to be using what is called egg crate custom fit to insert in trays and then use wicks. After I read the posts , I picked up some tips and ideas and adapted. Karin is also a great resource and a frequent reader and contributor to the Forum who has posted a lot of photos of her set ups. She has a large collection. My collection is the same size as yours , probably. I mostly check everything every other day when watering. when i needed 1500 pots to move the collection.. i hit recycle bins all over town .... and talked with nursery owners.. who always seem to have a pile somewhere on the property ... the only downside to free pots... was that afterwards... i had 200 different models.. and it was a problem to neatly stack them for storage ... frankly cheaper is better and free is best ... then you need a good potting medium .... something that will hold some water.. but shed most.. i used promix.. and had some problems because it help too much water ... if i knew then.. what i know now.. i would have added some bark fines to increase water shedding .... dig... pot.... and leave them standing where ever .... move them once in a while to insure they dont freeze to the ground .... AFTER THEY FREEZE SOLID ... stack them like a pyramid .. on their sides... on the north side of a building .... you can leave them there all winter ... the key is... no water on a frozen pot ... they wont be happy frozen into an ice cube .... no sun on a black pot ... i had about 1000 in the pole barn .. and 500 stacked outside ... most losses were associated with those in the barn ... which was two or 3 zones higher than outside.. and they came out of dormancy a MONTH early .... a full three months before last frost date ... a big ... BIG problem.. having fully leafed out hosta with 60 days until frost free ... those outside... stayed dormant longer .... came out of dormancy at the right time.. and missed most of the frost ... i used paint pens to mark the sides of the pots.. as labels sticking out... made handling extremely painful ... the paint will easily last a year or two ... lol .. i still go to nurseries where i donated/recycled them.. and see the names of my hosta on their pots.... good luck ken

soonermagic, I feel your pain! We have something like 68 windows, most of which I have no intention of "treating", because they face the back of the house which is our acreage, and it's all woods. But there are 18 windows I feel need to be dealt with right away, like guest room and bath, and kids bedrooms, master bath and closets and master. So I had a blind guy (not a man who cannot see) come out to measure and show me some plantation shutters (gorgeous), then he sent me a quote. It was $7,000.00. OMG! Not that they aren't beautiful, but no way could I get that expenditure past DH at this point in our build when we are practically hemorrhaging money. So... I asked him (after having two more estimates from two other companies, products weren't as high quality as his and even more money) what we could do to lower that. The solution we came up with was keeping the plantation shutters on the first floor (including the master) and putting wood blinds upstairs. Still expensive, but much more pallatable. Good luck, I know it's an expensive proposition. I have a friend up the street who did a few plantation shutters at a time, but I'm not that patient. Amy

Wow ! what a job that must have been. But it's all looking good again. I'm wondering how your cryptanthus will do in that sunshine. Do you plan on some shadecloth?
Keep us up to date on your new house construction,and your future plans for the broms,etc.

Awesome! I'm sure you must have some battle wounds from all that moving.
You know it looks so good, you could sell tickets and call it a plant museum. I'd buy a ticket!

Will need a photo diary for your house building, how exciting this will be. Congrats on the move.

Chanin, we understand how you feel because we have to move plants all the time as our construction progress. Luckily our plants are not as lethal! Would be most interested to see the design of your new house - is it custom designed to accomodate your spinies? We designed our house before we got the bromeliad disease & now we are adapting parts of the design to incorporate conservatorys and glass corners so there's room for more plants inside! My whole top floor studio will be turned into a conservatory!!!

Actually, what saved my hands & arms from "lethal" is long "leather" gloves.
Luckily, there were many good friends gave me their hands
moving all my 1,000 spinies pots to the new place,
where is just close to my next door.

I just did open the fence for walking through to my collection easily.
In fact, this new place has not been used for year, no house or any constructions,
so I can use the whole place as my plant nursery.

You can see there is a big tree in that land which gives some shade
for my Cryptanthus and seedlings.
This morning I saw a 1 foot wide beehive hanging on a tree's branch.

You know, what I worry is all my little poor lizards and skinks.
I don't know if they could find their ways to the new garden.
I've not seen even one :-(

Chanin, that makes me tired just thinking about it! Are you going to tear down your house and start over, or just add to it? Where will you live in the meantime?

Thanks Chris & Max... LOL, at least I'm OK, with few scars on my hands!

Lisa, I will keep my old house, it's still OK to live in.
The new lofty modern style will be built in front of the old one.
It seem there will be no space for my plants anymore.
But it's all right, as I have another lager property not far from Bangkok,
but that could be a long project moving, again.
